QuoteThanks for reply if you come over you don't have to use Rolling Stone :)
Cool! (you've got one of these, right?)

No I don't ;D Bring one with. I think it's time to throw the Rolling Stone back issues out ;)
Set these on shuffle & then we'll be sorted  ;)

God will forgive them. He'll forgive them and allow them into Heaven.....I can't live with that.

Good thinkin' man. Have the catalog might shuffle it.
Not the one thing. I used to think I
could at least some way put things right.

We keep Rolling Stone in the bathroom for a reason. No Paper No Worry.

So why still buy it when there are alternative, arguably far better music mags out there? Mojo & Uncut are good examples, recent covers? John & Yoko, Jimmy Page, Neil Young, Stone Roses, Nick Drake etc  :)

These magazines are great except for that fact that if you live in the US one issue costs the same as a year long subscription to Rolling Stone.  I love Uncut and Mojo but its expensive.  Magazines are dead in the US.  I just got a subscription to Paste for $5 and I expect that to be gone soon too.

kings of leon kind of sucks...  like... a lot.

First off there is no comparison. Jim James would rip every one of their faces off and wipe his ass wit it.

Now that's out of the way: KoL aren't a bad band, they just have nothing original about them. Whereas MMJ is the re-definition of kick you in the face with awesomeness and rock! You could have at least made this interesting said MMJ vs Zeppelin or Jim James vs Ludwig Van Beethoven!

Same here in Japan. I buy Mojo, Uncut, Q & Empire every month and they're about $10 each.

I found Spin magazine online...not sure if it happens every month?

Lots of music non-related ads, which always pisses me off + you can't take your PC into the john  ;)

Im prob in the minority when it comes to KOL at this board but i feel they are truly a great rock band.  I really love there sound  and they hit all the rights spots for me.  Besides the guys at King of Leon love mmj.  Caleb and Nathan even referenced his love for at dawn a couple of years ago during a jambase interview:

Caleb: We love the road. So, we go out on tour, get sick of the road and hate the road, so we go back home. Then we make a record about missing the road. The vibe of this record is almost melancholy. We came home from this great tour of England and went straight into the studio. You love being at home but you're also wondering what's going on out there while you're there. There are songs that are kind of melancholy, but a good melancholy. It's kinda like when I listen to My Morning Jacket's At Dawn. That record sounds so lonesome but they were at home making that record. I guess at home people feel more comfortable to cry.

Nathan: [At Dawn] didn't leave our CD player for probably five months. It was just one of those records where every song reminds you of five different things. You experienced every single emotion on pretty much every one of those songs. You felt happy, sad, lonely, loved, whatever. It's so amazing. It's a feel good record but yet there are songs that'll rip your heart out. But, you don't mind that your heart's being ripped out because it feels so good, so natural. It pretty much hit on all cylinders on that record and that was very influential in our headspace for our new album.

Nathan & Caleb
We weren't raised listening to the music that everybody else was raised listening to. So, when we hear something that we've never really heard before, it hits us in a totally different way. Most bands hear a record and can name you five bands that it sounds just like. We don't have that luxury, or maybe that curse. If something moves us, then shit, it's hitting a spot that's never been hit before. We can't compare it to another feeling we've had or another record we've heard or another song or another band. We respond to the way it makes us feel right then. It's very natural.

In my opinion there are few bands out there today that hold a candle to MMJ but the Kings are one of them.  I would much rather hear KOL on the radio than some of the other trash passed off as rock these days (nickleback, the fray, etc).

I think Caleb is an amazing song writer and if you disagree please YouTube the song "Trani" which Bob Dylan himself called "one helluva song".

The bands are so different though in terms of style, sound and fans.  Since their last CD people have been hopping on the KOL bandwaggon big time, and for someone like me that sucks because KOL used to be my "pocket band" that I could whip out and surprise people with because no one where I am from had ever really heard of them, but now they are everywhere and they have tweens bopping along to songs like "use somebody" but KOL is as gruff as any rock band out there today.  Listen to their older shit while drinking beers on a porch during summer and then tell me they don't kick ass.  Then listen to their new stuff while sippin on some red and smoking doobies and tell me it isn't epic, especially songs like "crawl" and "closer" which might as well be Zeppelin songs.

I'm glad MMJ isn't as "mainstream" as KOL because I can still talk about them constantly and almost all my friends have no idea who they are, and when I play MMJ songs that are old they seem new to my buddies and they love them. That makes me happy because it's like they are my own little special band even though they are huge.

As for live shows, KOL doesn't even come close.  Seen 'em both within the year and...yeah...Caleb is a good frontman but Jim is just fucking ON IT and constantly on top of his game.

MMJ will get its due soon enough, but damn in my opinion you've got to give KOL credit for rocking out.

Quoteid say this is hardly a conversation.

KOL will - at best - end up being the Foo Fighters of this generation.  a constant barrage of radio hits, arena tours, etc. while being way better than most of the other huge commercial radio bands, but still not being that great.

that is a pretty low ceiling if you ask me.

but the Foos don't take themselves too seriously.  they're a fun band.   I never took to KOL... maybe I should listen to their earlier albums, but the guy's voice never appealed to me.  but it at least seemed like they were making honest music in the beginning, and now it's a lot of style and little soul.   with MMJ, their soul makes their style, and I think they get enough recognition.  if i were in a band that played from midnight to 4am at Bonnaroo, I wouldn't be concerned with magazine covers.

I think KOL is more popular in other parts of the world than MMJ.  So perhaps they have more record company ($$$$) support?  Could it be?
Love both bands, but come on, is there really any question?

They're very popular in the UK & have been since Y&M. Their last tour in the UK was a 12 date arena tour including one @ the O2 (where the Led Zeppelin reunion took place) & a final night at Wembley Arena (12,500)

Whats wrong with Canadian Hunter?! In my freezer right now!!

So basically, many ears can appreciate the music of KoL, but only so many ears have the ability to appreciate MMJ for what they are.
