What song do you hope NOT to hear on the new tour?

Sticky Icky Green Stuff

My initial reaction to this thread was "shut the fuck up".

Last tour the only song I didn't really want to hear was What A Wonderful Man because I saw a few shows during the Z time period and was spent on that.  then they didn't play it at the last show I went to so now I really wouldn't mind seeing it again. I thought I felt that same way about "The Way That He Sings" for a minute but then I saw them play a face ripping version in 08 and decided It's still fucking awesome even though Jim plays it almost every show.  The only other song they could play that I could honestly say I wouldn't "care" much about would be Golden and that's another case of seeing it at a lot of shows.  It's my own problem if I'm bored with a song, there really isn't any song by MMJ that I can't stand.  They can't be completely obscure all the time even though I wish they were a little more liberal with their setlists on occasion.

I will say one thing.  Every year since I've started seeing the jacket live, which hasn't been long, only since 2004, they have gotten exponentially better live.  More intense, Louder, Cleaner, Tighter, etc.  Go to these shows because you love My Morning Jacket, please don't ruin the vibe by demonizing songs.

QuoteI don't get why people don't like Thank You Too, it sounds good live as well.
Also I'm pretty sure it's Jim's voice on It's Been A Great 3 or 4 Years, at first I thought it was Johnny but now after hearing a lot of Jim James interviews I think it's him.

It's definitely Johnny, "Your favorite cousin on the McQuaid side of the family"  Jim is on the the Olliges side of the family, the message is to him.

For the longest time I wanted to stick to my guns, that Jim was leaving himself a message on his own machine and a lot of that makes sense with some things he says, but you have finally convinced me with this post.

And seriously no offense to mahgeetah but this thread blows.  :P

It really does. And like BH said, no offense Mahgeeta, but we've all been jonesen for some live jacket.  We're about to get it and now we put some stipulations on it?  I know it's a hypothetical question and all, but still...    laissez les bon temps rouler     :)

I'm gonna defend my buddy mahg33ta here, insofar as this forum has threads on buttholes, beer, cars, and damn near anything else.  Some posts get no responses but this one is thought provoking.  I am a diehard deadhead but can tell you there were times when I'd be at a show and a tune would come up and I'd be like, this is a good time to get a beer or take a piss.  It doesn't reduce my fervor for the band to admit some songs, at certain times, might just fall out of favor, albeit temporarily.  The great thing about music, for me, has been rediscovery.  I'll put something on the back burner and not dust it off for years.  So, hats off to mahg33ta for challenging our idol worship.  I don't think this statement should, in any way, put into question my love for MMJ or you fine forum folks, nor mahg33ta's.

LOL I got a shut the fuck up and a this thread blows!    I guess that's what I get for trying to start a thread- not so good at it!

To be clear:
I am jonesing for live MMJ as much as the next guy.   I'm not sure how this thread calls my fandom into question but I can assure you I will travel whenever humanly possible and spend within my means to see the boys (and MOF, and JJ).

It's because I'm SO excited for this show that it got me thinking about what songs I'd love to hear.   In fact, I made a spreadsheet of all of the studio tracks and began to sort them from highest to lowest (warning: geek alert).

What I dscovered was that while I was struggling with ranking my favorite list (my top 5 became a top 10 became a top 25 list), it was easy for me to pick my bottom 5 or 10.   I thought that was kind of interesting and it made me think about why that was.   That was the genesis of this thread.

If I'd said "what's your least favorite song?" I wonder if I'd have been met with the same outpouring?  Perhaps it's something about the live angle.

Anyway, let me know when I'm out of the penalty box and I'll try a new thread!

Thanks for the love Yac.

BH

Seriously it's no big deal.  I'm not questioning your fandom or even saying that you shouldn't have started this thread.  I just don't personally like focusing on the negative.  I didn't want to do the "Least favorite song" tournament either.  If everybody votes on their favorite songs, the not so favorites become obvious.

I guess it all stems back from that day in '82 when Joey Henderson told me I was his least favorite friend.
I'm digging, digging deep in myself, but who needs a shovel when you have a little boy like mine.

Seriously folks, don't let some negative energy prevent you from posting here in order to answer the original purpose of the thread.

I also add Golden to the list.  I've been jonesin for some Jacket too and with the shorter set, this is a more than relevant topic.  This is not about demonizing songs.  Guess what?  There are some songs that this band wrote that even I don't like.

You did just fine Mahg33ta.  Keep on starting threads as you see fit w/o fear of retribution. :)

I forgot to throw in my two cents.  Having seen only one show, which contained these two songs, and having glanced through the entire catalog,  I'd be okay if they didn't play "Thank You Too!" and "Sec Walkin".

Please tell me you're joking!!?? I think the song kicks ass anyway, but f*cking SMOKES live!
Because we're all in this together...

Jellyfish

I knew that would strike a nerve ;).I stand by my opinion that it's their worst song and yes I have witnessed it live.

That being said I can't wait for Raleigh and it wouldn't ruin my night if they play it.

Give me a Rollin Back. That's the song I am chasing.

As a non-violent MMJ fan, I would be more civil in this situation and just leave a peanut butter pudding surprise on the hood of their car

QuoteOk, admittedly this is a bit of a negative topic, but it's prompted by my recent MMJ listening overload in advance of the new shows.   It's not that any of the songs are bad, so to speak, just that I recognize that with 2 - 2.5 hrs, time and set list slots are limited.... I started thinking which are the 10 songs I most want to hear, and I'm noodling on that (and will start a new thread), but I realized after carefully reviewing all the disc listings.... there are quite a few songs on Evil Urges I could do without.

Specifically:

Sec Walking
Two Halves
Remnants
Aluminum Park
Thank You Too

all would be included.

There's really nothing from the older albums that would bum me out - maybe some of the Chocolate and Ice songs I don't know well (besides Cobra).
This.

I saw The Eagles in 1981 (along with Cheap Trick and Foreigner) at the Superdome I waited to go take a piss until they played I Can't Tell You Why, but now I like that song. Probably b/c I made out with this girl the next year and that was her favorite song. I think her name was Wesley; probably still is.
