My Morning Jacket's 2003 CD, "It Still Moves," would be the perfect soundtrack to a long, lazy, dusty drive cross-country, one that might inspire you to stop and set up camp under the stars someplace like Big Sky, Montana. With meandering guitar lines, spacey, reverb-coated vocals and a lolling, gentle rhythm section, the disc recalls the jammy, rambling rock of the '70s and the trippiness of contemporary indie (see also: Flaming Lips, Sparklehorse, etc.).
While the crux of MMJ's sound is culled from the classic rock of legends like Neil Young or even Simon & Garfunkel, the band has made fans of all ages. Frontman Jim James has said that The Muppet Show figures among his many and varied influences, and this type of whimsical, nostalgic vibe permeates the band's work, no doubt adding to its allure among twenty- and thirtysomethings weaned on the sounds of the '70s.

"It Still Moves" is the third full-length from the Kentucky quintet, which recorded all three discs in a family-owned farmhouse near Louisville. MMJ released 1999's "The Tennessee Fire" and 2001's "At Dawn" before catching the attention of the college crowd and a small contingent of radio stations with "It Still Moves."

Between records, MMJ still finds time to tour ... relentlessly. Three years of intercontinental and coast-to-coast gigging have made MMJ's live shows legendary. In fact, the demands of touring proved too much for founding members Johnny Quaid and Danny Cash, who left the band in 2003 and were replaced by Carl Broemer (guitar) and Bo Koster (keyboards). Don't miss this chance to see the band at its best. (Though if you can't make it to 4th & B this Thursday, you can sample the just-released live EP, "Acoustic Citsuoca.")
