On the road with My Morning Jacket
Friday, May 07, 2004
The life of a touring band can take a toll. That's proved especially true for Louisville, Ky., country-rockers My Morning Jacket.

Touring behind its acclaimed 2003 major label debut, "It Still Moves," proved to be a marathon proposition for the band, which logged one six-week stretch including stops in the States, Canada, Japan, the United Kingdom and Iceland.

Predictably, such concentrated bursts of temporary homelessness wreaked havoc on their personal lives: Guitarist Johnny Quaid (whose family farm provided the makeshift studio where the band recorded its first two indie-label albums) and keyboardist Danny Cash both departed for personal reasons in early 2004.

It's only fitting, then, that the quintet's latest release, the live EP "Acoustic Citsuoca," documents a few of the hours spent on the road in front of its audience. Recorded at a friend's Halloween party last fall, the album features five of leader Jim James' high/lonesome songs selected at random from the full spectrum of the group's recorded work. True to the Jacket's sound and spirit, it's a stripped-down but faithful rendering of their patented reverb-soaked twang.

9 p.m. Wednesday, Crystal Ballroom, 1332 W. Burnside St.; 503-225-0047; all ages, $15 advance, Ticketmaster; 503-224-4400. Also appearing: M. Ward. -- Corey duBrowa, Special to The Oregonian
