Nothing's been confirmed, yet, but you can bet that as soon as it is, it'll be posted here by word god CC Baxter on the shows page.

And yes.  You're right.  You have got to see them live.  Your life will change - no joke!

Welcome!

I think if MMJ is going to go to rock Sweden, then it's only fair that Europe and the Levelers have to play the states!  Cherokee!

Mixed bag of music marks Sundown series
By WAYNE BLEDSOE, bledsoe@knews.com
March 31, 2005

The popular Sundown in the City concert series will return to downtown Knoxville on April 21 with a show by legendary rock performer Steve Winwood.

The series consists of 12 free shows each Thursday on Market Square. Sundown in the City began in 1997 with what was planned to be a one-time concert, but the event's popularity helped turn it into a seasonal series.

Winwood was actually scheduled to perform in the series in 2004 but had to cancel on the day of the show due to a death in the family of a band member. The event went on with local artists and still drew a crowd.

Sundown in the City concerts regularly bring several thousand people to Market Square. The 2004 appearance by Bela Fleck and the Flecktones attacted approximately 12,000 music fans.

The series has always had a diverse line-up. The 2005 schedule includes Southern rock band Drive-By Truckers, new rock artists Rilo Kiley and My Morning Jacket, New Orleans soul legends the Neville Brothers, singer-songwriter Buddy Miller and a band led by jazz-funk artist Victor Wooten of Bela Fleck and the Flecktones.

Ashley Capps, president of A.C. Entertainment, which promotes the series, said Sundown in the City is a major force in promoting interest in downtown Knoxville and while the event is underwritten by the city of Knoxville, the city's financial contribution to the series is decreasing by design.

"Basically, it's just an insurance project for the event," said Capps.

The city will provide $86,000 in support of the 2005 series, down from $100,000 for the past two years. Capps said that the city would probably recoup half of the $86,000 this year.

"The goal is to wean the event from needing any city support at all," said Capps. "We've set up an escrow account with money raised by the event so that it will eventually be self-sustaining with support from the private sector."

Major underwriters of the series include the Regal Entertainment Group, Eagle Distributing and the Pilot Oil Corp.

Capps said the true flavor of the Sundown in the City could be gauged by the number of people who attended the event on the night that Winwood canceled his 2004 show.

"We really strive to present high quality music, but it's also a community celebration."

No, unfortunately not for these events.  Charlotte, NC is the place I call home.

QuoteIs it true?

My mother in law woke me up at 8:00 with the news so I ran in here to the computer to share the news and Laurie had already posted the article, so it must be true.  Can you make it EC?  Market Square is a beautiful place and these events really are like a big community party/get together.  Everyone I've been to has been beautiful, very chilled, easy going, happy crowd.
