An alt-rock recharge called 'Z'
Friday, November 04, 2005
Rock music periodically refreshes itself by going back to basics, in one way or another. Whether the impulse is radical (punk) or nostalgic (rockabilly revivalism), a kind of aesthetic retrenchment can help renew the music's vitality.

Such has been the case with the Americana movement of the past decade or so, in which folk, traditional and outlaw country and Southern rock styles have reasserted their place in music.

Truly healthy roots, though, will promote growth outward and upward. Much has been made of the experimental path trod by Wilco from its alt-country roots to the acclaimed eclecticism of its recent work, but that band is hardly alone -- and maybe not even the best example of a more creative Americana.

If you haven't yet, meet My Morning Jacket. The Louisville quintet's first three albums worked a reverb-thickened palette of hazy Southern psychedelia, but its live performances pushed the same material in a more energetic, nearly epic direction. The new album, "Z," is the band's great leap forward, its rhythms more supple, its melodic hooks more pronounced, its sound at once softened and heightened and focused. Jim James' "lonely goatherd voice" (as Filter mag called it), oft-compared to Neil Young's but really closer to Kevn Kinney's, is the music's stunning centerpiece. And its distinctive appeal is one of the basics worth keeping.

9 p.m. Saturday, Aladdin Theater, 3017 S.E. Milwaukie Ave.; $20 advance, Ticketmaster, 503-224-4400. -- Marty Hughley

Portland-influx news: San Francisco-based label Badman Recordings will be pulling up its tent stakes and moving here in a couple months. Badman has released records from the Innocence Mission, Hayden, the Posies, and tons more. Just recently, Badman did the vinyl for My Morning Jacket's psych epic, Z. Stoked to have 'em in town, definitely.
