21C grand opening will feature PJ party

The Courier-Journal

21C is no ordinary hotel -- so when it celebrates its grand opening the weekend of June 9 and 10, it will be no ordinary party.

Laura Lee Brown and Steve Wilson, owners and developers of the museum hotel on Main Street, will attempt to create a new category in the Guinness Book of World Records: "World's Longest Pajama Art Party."

Main Street, between Seventh and Eighth, will be closed that Saturday for the event, which will include performances by artists and musicians, including Jim James of "My Morning Jacket."

Tickets to the street party are $21.

And, for people willing to pay $1,000 per ticket for that Friday's events, there will be a five-course meal prepared by chef Michael Paley of Proof on Main and a private performance by Cirque du Soleil.

People are encouraged to wear their pajamas both nights. All proceeds will benefit the 21C Museum Foundation, the nonprofit organization that runs the hotel's art museum.

Here's the schedule:

Friday, June 9
The party will start that evening when Brown and Wilson unveil a permanent outdoor artwork created by Werner Reiterer, a Vienna artist. It will be displayed at the corner of Seventh and Main streets, in front of the hotel.

Guests that evening also will be treated to a five-course dinner at Proof on Main, the hotel's restaurant, and a stand-up act by Adam Ferrara, featured on Comedy Central.

The night's highlight will be a private performance by Cirque du Soleil, the first time the celebrated group has performed in Louisville.

Saturday, June 10
Starting at 6 p.m., several musicians will perform, including Mark Geary with Bootsie Anne and Tyrone Cotton. Jim James will sing too.

Rock 'n' roll painter Brian Olsen, who uses his fingers, palms, elbows and brushes to paint portraits of famous musicians, will showcase his talent.

Trophies in several categories will be awarded for unique pajamas.

You must be homeless to think that a Jim James show is overpriced ;D.I ordered my tix today. And it is a fundraiser. Hey does that mean its tax deductible.

it is impossible for Jim James to sound like shit...take that back!

i would pay $21 to see Jim shit in a bag, light it on fire, throw it against a canvas, and then play "I Think I Am Going To Hell"...

you wouldn't pay $21 for a Jim James solo show?  that blows my mind!
