This thread on the PJ board was ticking me off, so I had to respond.  Overall, there is some love for MMJ over there, but quite a bit of complaining from the European fans.  Some people just don't get it.

The average numbskull rock fan will never get MMJ. The music is far too complex for the one chord headbangers out there.

Just bathe in your own feeling of superiority 8)

I'm not sure that PJ's music appeals to the average numbskull rock fan, does it?
You either get it or you don't, it's that simple for me...
If (the) kids have the time (& want) to express their anger at beauty that they don't understand, then let them...
We're all good over here, no?  :)
God will forgive them. He'll forgive them and allow them into Heaven.....I can't live with that.

It's really OK if someone doesn't like the Jacket. It's their opinion. Most of the folks on the PJ Red Mosquito really dig MMJ.

There's always gonna be haters. It applies to everything. No need to start a thread here about it 'cause it just seems like we're trying to start some shit.

I posted it because I find it fascinating that such differing views are out there.  We all love MMJ and it is interesting to me to see a viewpoint way off base from the feelings on this board.  I thought it would make for interesting discussion.

Well said.

It never occured to me that ALL Pearl Jam fans are numbskull, one chord headbangers.

I just imagine that they have a higher proportion of them in their fan base than , say..., for instance..., .....MMJ?

As can be clearly seen from their forum,  there is plenty of appreciation for MMJ's kind of music.

Pearl Jam isn't for everyone, neither is My Morning Jacket, or any other band of the past or present... No reason to instigate name calling and all that shit. If ya'll wanna talk shit about one performer against another, let's try something amusing for once like Beethoven verses Bach.

If a slew of Europeans don't dig the Jacket opening for Pearl Jam, for whatever reasons - maybe they'll grow into it, in time - but I happen to know a slew of Europeans who were royally PISSED about not getting to see MMJ on their last tour, and at the same time couldn't give a hoot-in-hell for Pearl Jam.

In other words, it goes both ways and nobody is going to convince anyone else to enjoy something they just don't "get"...

Ermmm.....????!!!!

As you say,  different strokes for different folkes.  As well as differences in musical taste clearly there are differences in what people find amusing. :D

I do not use prejudice nor do I discriminate.

I hate everyone on an equal basis.

I wasn't trying to convince these people to like MMJ, like I said, I just thought it would make for interesting discussion on here.

If you don't like it, go back to posting about Jim's hair, his beard, his t-shirts, etc.  I personally don't care for any of those topics, so I don't post in them.  This, for me, makes for more interesting discussion and a fresh outside perspective of our favorite band.

I'm going to consider that a vote for "Tropical Palms"  ;)

Seriously though, to say "Pearl Jam FANS" complain about MMJ....  How about there are a couple of guys on the PJ message board that don't care for MMJ.  It doesn't matter who they get to open for them, there are going to be people that don't care for the opening band.  Sleater Kinney met the WRATH when they opened for PJ.  Then again they also gained a shit ton of new fans as well.  For the most part (and I consider myself somewhat of an expert on the subject)  most hardcore PJ fans really really love MMJ.  OK....... so how about Jim's hair, I like it just a little below the shoulders myself, but that's just me. :-*

That's why I said "Some PJ Fans Complain about MMJ".  Some = not all, but to make everyone happy, I will change my misleading subject title.  ;) ;D

What is there to discuss? Lead me in a direction and I'll play ball... should we make suggestions as to why some people, Europeans in particular, aren't digging MMJ?

I wasn't able to see the tour, because they didn't cross the Mason-Dixon line - but I would have liked to. I'd have enjoyed myself, I like both bands, but I probably would have come home saying I'd rather see MMJ do the tour by themselves, puttong on a full 3 hours or so a night, instead of half hour openers.

What well versed complaints I did see from the Europeans were totally foreign to me. Too mellow? Didn't rock enough? I disagree completely... but they'd have the same reaction to how I feel about Pearl Jam.

Thanks for playing along Ewok.  I could have led the discussion better in my first post.

I wonder if the short set just doesn't really allow the guys to get off the ground, especially considering that most of the fans there just can't wait to get Pearl Jam on stage to begin with.   Song length seemed to be a common complaint, and I guess if you're just wanting to get them off the stage and not give them a chance, the songs would seem long.  The comments that were most ridiculous to me though, were the ones that said they didn't rock out.  I just don't see how anyone that knows anything about music would come away with that opinion after seeing MMJ play, but I am biased.

I was at the Bern gig last night and I must say why schould anybody complain. Morning Jacket rocks  :D I had never heard of the band before but I must say - respect 8)
And buy the way would Pearl Jam have any crap sharing the same stage - no :o
Bern was cool - PJ are the best - but Morning Jacket is certainly up to be the opener for PJ.
I just want to thank Ed Vedder for singing, beeing alive and still rocking. The man makes me cry - still after 15 years!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Peace

Geezer

I got a chance to see MMJ with Pearl Jam in Lisbon 2 nights last week.  Killer sets by both bands.  But, I was a fan of both going in.

What I LOVED, though, was that MMJ took the stage to Van Halen's "Eruption" blaring over the PA on the 2nd night.  Now that's the way to take a stage!

I don't know if they do this often (I've only seen them a couple of other times), but it was a great call that night by whomever was responsible for it.

And MMJ got great crowd response both nights, even though I don't think they've had much exposure over in Europe.  I didn't notice any haters at the show...

I stil can not stand corin tucker's voice!  But yes, there are a bunch of hardcore pj fans that love mmj  :)  I'd love to see them both play equal amounts.  That would be a dream come true to me.

In fact didn't I read somewhere that Jim and Patrick were PJ fans themselves and would play songs off of Ten ??

Oh and when PJ tours the south (they better!!!), I would love for MMJ to open again.
