Will someone confirm if the man in the bear suit who led the countdown at midnight was in fact gavin newsom, the mayor of SF (as he was announced)? I thought it was a joke, but no one laughed.

Also, please summarize what was said during the shootout at the end of the show? The dialogue was muffled and hard to understand. What provoked Tom to start shooting at everyone?

I read in an article that it was the actual mayor in the suit.  This doesn't make it true but I think it was him.

I havn't heard the dialogue but I think Two Tone shot everyone because they ate him at the beginning.  That may have pissed him off just a bit.
I'm digging, digging deep in myself, but who needs a shovel when you have a little boy like mine.

The mayor hosted his own party/fundraiser that night, but it ended at 8pm. That's awfully early for a New Year's Eve party to end. I think he heard about the sticky rock and roll happening in his beautiful city that night and decided he couldn't miss it. So after his party ended he headed on over to the Fillmore. Of course he dressed up as the bear so he wouldn't upset any of the partygoers who paid $500 to attend his party and didn't get the chance to countdown the New Year with him. We all know where the real party was. ;)

the man in the bear suit was not gavin newsom. if it was i will wear a bear suit to work for a month. tommy killed all the other members to enact his revenge for killing and eating him at the start of this tragic, shakespearian tale of reincarnation, revenge,  redemption, and finally acceptance into heaven.

Yeah, you are probably right. Newsom parties with his fancy friends rather than with the greatest rock band on the planet. Too bad cause he missed an awesome show. I'll wager MMJ invited the mayor to the show.

It was obvious TTT was seeking revenge but I could not remember if after Mahgheeta he grabbed his shotgun and immediately began shooting or if there was some exchange of words before the melee ensued. The shooting and the yelling I remember went on for a couple of minutes, and through the foggy haze of NYE I vaguely remember there having been said some funny one-liners. It was late and my mind had been blasted with ethereal sounds for nearly 4 hours. I am hoping someone has an audio recording that captured the last part of the show.

I think the other guys said something before he began shooting. I seem to remember someone saying something to the effect of "What you doing Tom?", or "What you doing with that gun Tom?" Something like that. I don't remeber him saying anything though. I hope that whole bit shows up somewhere too.

Concluding the first set with "They Ran" from 1999's The Tennessee Fire, the band filed off-stage only to return a few minutes before midnight, with San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom in tow. Dressed in a bear suit, Newsom helped the band count down to the New Year, seemingly attempting to prove why San Francisco is either America's greatest city or the first actual evidence of a metropolitan acid casualty. Finally, at the stroke of midnight, the crowd lapsed into pure rapture, a wild orgy of celebration, white balloons descending from the ceiling, falling into our eyes and faces. But everyone seemed too euphoric to even notice, embracing the person next to them, understanding that wherever we were at that moment seemed far better than anywhere else on this weird planet. As Martha & the Vandella's "Heat Wave" blared over the loudspeakers and confetti fluttered from the ceiling, champagne toasts were hoisted in the air and one couldn't help but feel powerful vibrations that 2007 would be much better than the long national hangover that was 06.

Most definitively, unequivocally, NOT Mayor Gavin Newsom in the bear suit that night. Though, that certainly is a far better story!  :P

I got lots of good photos and some video from the night.  Just dont know how to post them all for your viewing pleasures.  If anyone is interested and wants to help a brother out feel free to give me some advice...

It's not too difficult to accomplish - if you can post on a message board you can figure out posting pictures.

Go to a photo hosting site like http://photobucket.com register for an album and then upload your photos. The site will provide postable links for your pictures like so:

Just out of strange curiosity (and my son's fascination with the skit), who's who in the Orgegon Trail opening. I figured JJ and TTT out. I do not think I have ever heard the other mates speak so I am not familiar with their voices.
