July 21 concert to features one of rock's greats

By Reilly Capps

Dylan helped KOTO go electric.

The last time Bob Dylan was in town, he was such a big draw that he almost single-handedly paid for a new transmission tower on Last Dollar, helping people hear KOTO all the way over on Dallas Divide.

He's back this summer, playing the KOTO Doo-Dah July 21 in Town Park.

Tickets, $50, go on sale this Saturday at 10 a.m. on koto.org, or at the KOTO studios Monday morning.

My Morning Jacket, an indie-rock outfit and darling of the thrift-store T-shirt crowd, will open.

"This is a great bill, this is a great combo," says Jumpin' Janice Zink, special events coordinator for KOTO. "Dylan's an icon, and My Morning Jacket is definitely gonna attract the younger kids - not that Dylan doesn't. Dylan crosses all boundaries."

KOTO officials are expecting and hoping that the show will sell out.

The second greatest artist of all time according to Rolling Stone, Bob Dylan is now in his fourth decade of filling Woody Guthrie's shoes as American folk singer extraordinaire.

Dylan only missed being number one on the Rolling Stone list because Lennon met McCartney on that playground in Liverpool. But while two-fourths of The Beatles are dead -and Ringo was never really that conscious to begin with - Dylan still tours all year long.

His latest album is the rolling "Modern Times." When it was released last year, it hit the charts at number one, making Dylan, then 65, the oldest person ever to top the charts. "Modern Times" is arguably one of the better albums put out in modern times, and it is almost certainly the best album ever produced by an artist who had already put out 45 previous albums.

"I am so psyched, I can't even begin to tell you," says Zink.

Zink has been trying to book Dylan since November. "It wasn't easy," she said. It was all about catching the right artists on their way through the middle of the country at the right time, and My Morning Jacket is opening for Dylan at Red Rocks two days before the Doo-Dah.

The show is co-sponsored by Las Montañas, the Latin restaurant, which has sponsored previous KOTO shows.

Dylan's appearance at the Doo-Dah in 2001 earned the station tens of thousands of dollars.

"It was a huge moneymaker for us," says Ben Kerr, KOTO General Manager. "We could use another good financial shot in the arm."

My Morning Jacket, the opening act, is like My Chemical Romance but not affected and overdressed. They're jam-band-y and psychedelic, but not as much as, say, String Cheese Incident. Compared to String Cheese Incident, My Morning Jacket rocks like KISS. A lot of the stuff on their latest album, "Z," is very good.

They're led by a man named Jim James, whose parents obviously liked their last name enough to use it twice, and who pours out smart lyrics in a plaintive falsetto that some have compared to Neil Young's.

this may be the worst categorization of MMJ i have ever read...and the facts on Jim's name are wrong!!!  do some f'in research Mr. Capps!!!
If you're lucky, MMJ will fill the void you didn't even know you ever had. If you're luckier, you'll get to see them live.

This certainly is rough cmc.  Darlings of the thrift store t-shirt crowd?!  Comparison to My effing Chemical Romance?  WTF?!  And yes, Mr. Olliges should give this guy a piece of his mind...or just rock his socks off at the show.
Keep on dreamin' boy,
cuz when you stop dreamin'
it's time to die.

I was about the post something very similar...'darlings of the thrift store crowd' was bad enough but Chemical Romance?!!

I'm tempted to quote Mr Slave  ;)

God will forgive them. He'll forgive them and allow them into Heaven.....I can't live with that.

Hey, the guy never heard of MMJ, he listened to Z once after finding out he had to write an article and then instantly became an expert.  What do you expect?
I'm digging, digging deep in myself, but who needs a shovel when you have a little boy like mine.

to competently do his job!

then again he does write for the Telluride Daily Planet...i guess there are more important things about skiing going on than music.

Jeez, Telluride is more isolated than I thought. This guy needs a refresher course on rock and roll, and I think MMJ is just the band to do it for him. Here's one of the not-so-younger crowd who will be at this show not just for Dylan, but especially for the opener.
I also object to his comment about Ringo, who always got the short end of the Beatles stick, but was one of the best rock drummers ever. Sure, that's a big was, and his point is the Dylan's still going strong, but still.
"...it's gonna be great -- I mean me coming back with the band and playing all those hits again"
