I have a confession to make. I've considered buying two tickets to the NYC show without asking my other half. This would be nice if we even lived close to NY. I started looking at Amtrak rates and their only 100 bucks round trip. Heres the catch...it takes all day...literally..Fuck it I'm buying the tickets and hopping the train...if anyone else is going to be as broke as me and my buddy then suggest any ideas on camping or a MMJ bum camp before heading back to train :D :D....she's gonna kill me but I DON'T CARE!!

I feels ya!  I too will be pretty broke, but that's why god gave me an American Express card.  In looking into some affordable lodging I came across a lot of hostel type places - most of which looked pretty scary. While I certainly will not be staying at the Plaza, it is equally certain that I will not be staying at a hostel, but here is a link to a hostel that is (a) super cheap; (b) pretty clean; and (c) great location.  As well as a few private rooms, they offer dorm-style lodging which is one way to get by on a modest bank roll. http://www.hinewyork.org/rooms.shtml

I'm gonna buy two tickets and I have no clue who is going with me yet :). My plan is to make the 8 hour drive the day off, stay the night and head back to Ohio on Saturday. I did find a pretty good deal on a hotel only 4 miles from RCMH.

I'm trying to figure out how I can get a couple of days off, find the lowest airfare and lodging costs, but I have every intention of making it out there. All this enthusiasm from everyone is making me pretty nervous about the availability of the tickets tomorrow.

Dude, you could really control your costs by hopping a freight train. If you roll into a New Jersey train yard hidden in a box car, you're bad ass. From there it's just a short swim to Manhattan...

Nah, I actually like traveling by train, it's a nice way to see the countryside, AND you can either bring on your own booze, or buy from the bar car.

Nah, I always thought it'd be cool to take a train across the Rockies, like from Salt Lake City to Denver.

Also, I'm not sure if you've heard about this, but there's been a proposal for a high speed train from LA to SF, which is in now the early planning stages. I still think it's going to be tough to get built, especially with a current $14.5 billion state budget deficit, and the bulk of the money for the train coming from voter approved bonds (tbd). It'd make the trip in 2 1/2 hours though! I think it's awesome, and I hope it happens. I'm also an engineer though, and a dork about this kind of stuff. Not even the cool kind of engineer that drives the trains either!

I took an 18 hour long bus ride from New York to Charleston to see MMJ my first (and so far) only time.  It was obviously more than worth it.

I stay at the Virginia Guest House everytime I go to NYC.  Its on E 112th which is Harlem but its not bad at all.  I've wandered the streets alone at 4am and never run into problems.  (stayed there probably 20 nights total).  

It's almost identical to the dorm room I had back in college but a tad worse.  BUT its $50/night for a room with a single bed with your own key, etc.  There is a shared bathroom/shower (one male one female) on each floor so it really is a dormroom type setup.  

There is a subway stop (the 6) on 110th so you are literally 2 blocks away (1 min) to subway and it goes straight down the east side of manhattan.  I read a ton of reviews on hostels/cheap hotels and this one had the best review.  

Beds are pretty uncomfy but after a MMJ show and a few beers you won't notice the difference!

also, try the YMCAs--for one night, they're not that bad. i've known many internationals, people coming in for the marathon crashing there.

i live here so i feel for ya.

another suggestion is to stay out in Newark (hilton, etc) across the street from Newark Penn station--it's a 15 min train ride in and the trains run all the time into NY Penn...you can jump on the subway or cab it up to RCMH--super close
