The first time I saw the band was January 18th 2004 at Bluecats in Knoxville TN.  I ended up going by myself because it was a week night and I couldn't convince anyone else I knew that the show was worth going to.  It was fucking freezing that night and I really didn't feel like going out alone and having to go to work the next day, but at this point in time I had laid awake many nights (in a row) listening to At Dawn and The TN Fire on headphones, my friends and my wife had not.  I don't think I moved the entire show.  The opening guitar lines to One Big Holliday weren't notes on a guitar; they were divine signals transmitting from some magical universe calling me home.  Jim had the reverb on his vocals cranked UP that night, and his voice was like catching a gigantic sonic wave and surfing it into a beautiful oblivion.  When they played "Bermuda Highway" time and space actually resigned.  I think this show was either Bo and Carl's second or third show.  Something magical happened that night and looking back on it, I'm sure that Bo and Carl in some kind of way were right there with me.  That evening was an awesome confirmation to my heart and soul.  To see what I had been listening to through headphones actually take on an even more beautiful, more powerful, and more direct (real) form was........Life Changing.  I still haven't come down!!!

November 24th, 2006.  Riviera Theatre, Chicago.

After not going to see them in Michigan a number of times over the last few years, I finally decided that I had to go see them when they in Chicago.  This was my big learning experience with not drinking the night before a show that requires me to drive 5 hours to get there.  I more or less didn't get any sleep, had a terrible night, and was quite hungover.  It was the best show I've ever seen.  The lights, the music, the atmosphere; phenomenal.  I nearly shit myself when they came back on with the orchestra.  I wasn't familiar with a couple of their albums but of the songs I knew, I heard everything that I wanted to hear.  They very quickly became one of my favorite bands.

QuoteMy Morning Jacket live at The Canal Club, Richmond, VA, January 24, 2004

Posted by Scott Holcomb at the My Morning Jacket mailing list:

Caught the show last night in Richmond at the Canal Club.  Great time.
The club was a bit of a pain in the ass with a huge line to get your
ID checked to get in and several supporting beams in the club itself
that made it really hard to see the whole band at once.  Overall, good
show, although a bit short.  I think it was typical for a MMJ show,
but I'd just see the Drive-By Truckers do 3 hours solid the night
before.  Anyway, I got most of the setlist down.  There were three
songs I couldn't remember the titles of.  I had friends taping, so I
should be able to get those once I get copies of the show.  Anyway,
here's what I got:

1/24/04  Canal Club, Richmond, VA

Mahgeetah
Dancefloors
???
The Way That He Sings
Lowdown
Just One Thing
???
One Big Holiday
I Will Sing You Songs
Phone Went West
Steam Engine
Golden (Jim solo)
Bermuda Highway (Jim solo)
Xmas Curtain
???
Run Thru

I was surprised to see Phone Went West in the middle of the set.  Just
got used to it closing the show.  Regardless of the placement, it
freakin' rocked!  Other highlights were One Big Holiday and a monster
Run Thru to close the show.  The rest was really great as well with
the band raging as usual and really getting the crowd into it.  Damn
glad I got to see this one.

Wish I could make it up to the 9:30 Club this weekend, but
unfortunately, I've got call duty this weekend.  Next time.

Scott

Lay Low
What a Wonderful Man
Off The Record
Don Dante
Run Thru
At Dawn

I forced three of my friends to go along.  They hadn't heard anything about them and had a bad attitude going in, so with the very first thump of bass from Wordless, I slammed my beer and headed straight for the stage.

I actually teared up, literally, during The Bear and again during Dondante.  It was magical.   Apparently it was also a bit like heroin, as I have been jonesing for more live Jacket ever since.  To this day, I think the Off The Record performance might be the most physcadelic thing I have ever experienced. :o

I couldn't even sleep when I got home that night.  Two in the morning, drunk as a skunk, and I couldn't sleep!

Cheers to you boys. [smiley=beer.gif]

I'm digging, digging deep in myself, but who needs a shovel when you have a little boy like mine.

Bri, I spent my 40th Birthday at your first show! I think I remember you, you were the one talking about Nickelback on your cell phone during Bermuda Highway...

April 23, 2003 - Exit/In - Nashville, TN

Pretty small crowd and 2 opening bands (Detatchment Kit and Burning Brides) and MMJ didn't take the stage until 11:30 or so. I can remember during "Heartbreakin' Man" getting all goose bumpy and thinking what a special band this was and how excited I felt in my soul. By the time Jim came around to doing "I Will Be There When You Die" there was like 30 or 40 people there, all standing still and being as quiet as possible when some drunk idiot standing 5 feet from Jim says, (doesn't scream, just says it in a normal voice) "Do you realize how stupid you look up there?" and Jim stopped and people booed and Jim said, "Do you want to come up here and do it better?" and the drunk guy said, "I probably could" and then the guy got pushed out towards the front door while Jim talked about some random mother fucker ruining a magical moment, and then Patrick appears off stage right looking for the guy, then Jim went right back into it yelling, "There will be bigotry and there will be open minds!"

aaahhhhhhh rock 'n roll... ::)

This was my first show too Brian and I was there with two friends of mine who both complained the whole time going there then they just were transfixed by the music.  I had to piss before I even got there but I wasn't going to lose my spot.  We were there well before anyone else was. I was right in front of Carl, I could have touched him pretty much.  I had never went to a show that loud nor been so close to a band in my life.  I can't really explain it all.  I was so overwhelmed and overjoyed just being there even though my bladder was in a lot of pain afterwards I didn't even notice during the show.  It was the best time and best show of my life I would say.  I have seen them again both at Blue Cats when they came back and at the Theatre but nothing touches that first time.  The hair and rock was in full force.  It was so wonderful.

Do you happen to know of the setlist?  I can't remember it fully.  I do know most of the songs just not in an order.

sweatboard

Yeah, Tracy sent me the setlist once, but I'm not sure where I put it.

Will you post it again for us Tracy?

that's a great story...if only Patrick could have pummeled the guy into oblivion and rid the world of one less a$$hole could it be any better!
If you're lucky, MMJ will fill the void you didn't even know you ever had. If you're luckier, you'll get to see them live.

Feb (could be march or may) 2001 @ Headliner's Louisville, KY -

Underage & full of 100 proof E.L. Weller (fine Kentucky Bourbon    :o  )

aMD, Candyass, & I walk up to the side door - walk right in then the bouncer stops us.  Geutig's walking by just as the bouncer stops us - aMD hollers at him & the bouncer lets us in - the place wasn't crowded at all - maybe 100 people (probably less - thats been a few shots ago).

I remember the band walked out on stage in Celtics jerseys wearing rainbow clown wigs with little glowsticks in there mouths.  That was the first time I'd heard One Big Holiday & I remember getting completely lost in  War Begun  - it was me, the band, my bourbon & a pack camels - that's all that existed in my world in that moment in time

I cant remember the exact date - or I'd post the setlist.

That was my third show but more importantly was the first time that I realized Jacket wasn't just a hard rockin' band.  That extended Jim solo performance was so good.  Exceede expectations.

The first time I saw MMJ was Bonnaroo 04.  I was laying in the back of the field on Sunday morning trying to get some rest, but I just sat there watching this awesome band I had never heard before.  The huge puppets on stage being controlled by the conductor, AND some of the best music I have ever heard.  I have been a hardcore MMJ fan ever since.  They have the best, most original sound of any band I have heard.  Keep it up fellas, can't wait for the new album, and hope to see you at bonnaroo this summer.  Just remember, you can fuck your friends, you can fuck your instruments, but you can't fuck your friends instruments.  Fuck all ya'll for coming.
