I just discovered that Jim James opened up for John Mayer in April of 2002.

This makes me very happy. I am a HUGE John Mayer fan. In fact, John Mayer is what made me pick up a guitar in the first place.

I would have loved to been at that Mayer show.
Seeing my two heros back to back would have been glorious.

that combo sounds so silly to me.

What a weird combination...

John Mayer may make commercially viable music, but he's a helluva guitar player. He's also a really funny guy. He had a special on VH1 awhile back that was really funny. He took Trick Daddy to a western outfitter in Nashville and got him to dress up like a cowboy. Hilarity ensued. He also walked around the parking lot of a venue before one of his shows in a bear costume and basically made fun of himself and his fans. He kept asking people if they were there to see John Myers. Funny stuff.
Say friend, you got any more of that good sasparilla?

I won't hate, I'll just say he purposely sold out to become famous, I'll admit I saw john mayer w/howie day at the shelter in detroit.  it was when it was just john and the bass player.  it was okay, he kept bitching and bitching about the house music upstairs being so loud and how much it "sucked", I'd never tell an audience it sucks to be on stage for them haha but that's just me I guess.  that was in like 11th grade, oh how the time goes by.  I caught a little of him playin with herbie hancock at bonnaroo 05 and it sounded sweet.

I like his music and the dude  has some chops on the guitar but he seems a little pretentious at times.   I think he only wrote mainstream pop music so he can become famous and try to hook up with any hollywood starlet he can meet.  His last couple of girlfriends were big time hollywood celebritys and he is dating jennifer aniston right now.  Its the complete of opposite of Jim James approach which is being low key and try to only be known for the music.

He can play but he's a sell out.  He claimed a little while ago that he was going to go back to playing real blues like his hero's and then he just put out another pop album to make $ and get more famous and hang out with Justin Timberlake.

Jim James could not be more opposite of John Mayer, thank god.

i do admit that i liked continum alot.  I thought it wasent your typical mainstream pop album and it was steeped in blues and soul music

It was called, "John Mayer has a TV Show?"  It was hilarious!  He did his interviews at a card table with a tarp as a back drop.  There was only one episode, which kind of makes it funnier. That definitely gave his some cred in my book; and it was soon after that I found out he was a BA on guitar.

MMJ and Mayer played back to back at last year's Bridge School Benefit.

he is pretty funny and he can shred...he doesn't take himself too seriously, which i like----for the past 3/4 years he's been making real music (hey, the john mayer trio wasn't bad)
but come on...there's nothing sexy about poop. Nothing.  -bbill

I agree I think he can be pretentious at times.
I know other people have called him a sellout and I don't think that's fair. He's doing what most guys would do. When he first came out most people said he was a Dave Mathews clone. go figure

I think John Mayer should be opening for MMJ, if they need one...

You guys think John Mayer really made out with Perez Hilton @ a party?  Perez took a lie detector test and passed.   I know i shouldn't get involved in crap like this but i was just curious.
O, How time flies, with crystal clear eyes.  But it's cold, it's cold, when you're ending with diamond eyes.

John Mayer never sold-out. He has been in total control of his music since the beginning. Only thing is the label really pushed for "Daughters" to be a single and he didn't want it to be.

You guys have probably just heard the singles.
Go listen to "Something's Missing" or "Stop This Train".
You won't regret it.

 :-?

John Mayer definitely sold out...the problem is...we have a connotation with the term 'sold out' as being something bad.

As was already mentioned...JM has come out and said that he wrote sappy/poppy crap songs because he knew it would bring him money, bitches and fame....

He sold out UNDER HIS OWN will...which in no way is necessarily a bad thing.
