What are some of the highly regarded shows and recordings?

Historically significant  shows?

They're all historically significant.  Fact.

But I would start by grabbing three from these categories:
1.  Any Bonnaroo ('06 or '08 if you like newer stuff and covers)
2.  Any of the KCRW or KVRX radio broadcasts (for the combo
       of clarity and interviews)
3.  Then just any random show that is of decent to high quality.  
       Go to the archive and look for one from a year/era you don't
       have yet.  Maybe one from the town nearest you that has been
       downloaded a bunch and/or has a good rating and comments
       about it's quality or just it's magic.

That should form a solid foundation.  Get to it!

Agreed on both parts.

I was at the 40 Watt show and it was my cherry-popper, and wow was it amazing.  But quality of that recording ain't great, so it's up to you on whether you want to go for quality or energy.  As far as energy goes, you can't beat that show.

Grab the baustin-taped RCMH show and that WFPK is a great one for a clear version of the old stuff.

Their New Years Eve Run in San Francisco 2007 is quite amazing.  The New Years show itself is sound board quality plus has a lot of covers PLUS it covers a lot of their material, new and old.  Plus it is hands down the best Rock and Roll performance I have ever been to.

I also like their Headliners shows in Louisville! There's something about hearing a band in their home town...it just always sounds better.  That's why their Roo sets always kick ass - they really put a little extra something in for their loyal fans (the ones who sit in cold cold rain for 5 hours).  mmmmmmmm glow sticks mmmmmmmmmm

Bonnaroo 2008 (HIGH QUALITY)
  Significant because of the extra-long duration and the amazing selection from the discography. Features several off-the-wall covers and a number of guest musicians. Atmosphere surpasses that of the previous Bonnaroo shows. The weather was probably the worst they've performed in, their equipment falling to shit all around them only highlighted their technical abilities as musicians. Jim deems it Return to Thunderdome Pt. 2...

New Year's 2006/2007 (HIGH QUALITY)
  Duration, selection, atmosphere, and some of the greatest covers we've ever heard. Overall a very appropriately festive performance.

Bonnaroo 2006 (GOOD QUALITY)
  Significant because of the long duration and the selection of songs. Great selection from the discography with a handful of covers.

Bonnaroo 2004 (STUDIO QUALITY)
  This one is all about atmosphere. Return to Thunderdome.

Bonnaroo 2005 (STUDIO QUALITY)
  Excellent show highlighted by the random presence of giant puppets.

Boston Pops (NO RECORDING KNOWN TO EXIST)
  MMJ matched with an orchestra. There is a recording, somewhere... Someday, someone will allow the masses to hear what had to have been one of the most beautiful shows MMJ has ever put on.

9:30 Club (STUDIO QUALITY)
  On August 16, 2002, MMJ put on an incredible show at the 9:30 club. Jim dedicated this show to the memory of Elvis Presley. There is a soundboard recording out there, I know because I've got it, so if you pick around for it you'll find it was well worth your efforts. It's a short show, a little over 30 minutes, but the studio quality and the fact that all the songs are woven together makes this one of their best.

They played a show at the Opera House in Toronto that has probably the best live version of Steam Engine I have ever heard. Sorry I didnt have time to pull up the date.

Where does the '03 Bonnaroo show fall. It's amazing that they've been at most of the Roos so far. I love the stories and opinions. I have several shows but I don't know the history behind a lot of them. Thanks!

Their first show at the Ryman Auditorium in Nash was pretty damn amazing!

I think as standard procedure, the sound dude records every show they play just to have a personal archive of it all. We'll get to hear it at some point, but there's no telling when exactly that will be. We shall certainly see it, though.

I was told by an employee of Symphony Hall that they do record all their concerts.  I'm not SURE, but it's plausible.

In any event, those were two really really good shows.  I didn't agree with any of the (blah blah the band didn't integrate with the orchestra blah blah Patrick had an electric drum kit blah blah) poor reviews they recieved.  Run Thru with the Pops was insane.
