Awesome show. Very loud, crystal clear sound. Couldn't have been a more perfect evening for an outdoor show, and the set began right before sunset. Jim commented on the fresh NW air on multiple occasions.

can I just say thank you?  Before the show, through some states of happenstance, I saw Jim backstage walking to his bus.  I yelled from afar, "Thank you for doing what you do, Jim!".  And he waved and smiled.    What a show.   :D :D :D :D :D
And we went to Multnomah Falls afterwards for some natural sound effects!  What a night!   :o :o :o :o

I like it.  Mellow start and a rocking finish.  Sounds like a great show!

This was my first show at Edgefield and in Portland for that matter!

IT WAS AWESOME!  I love general admission shows!  We were up so  close and danced our asses off all night!  Only bummer was lack of ear plugs, my ears are still rining, but I'm still smiling ear to ear!

:D ;) :D :o :)

Great show last night.  Best of the four times I've seen them dating back to '04.  Highlights for me were Bermuda Hwy solo to open the show, Dondante, Cobra, and Run Thru.  Also, I've run hot and cold on "Evil Urges" but hearing the songs live definitely altered my opinion in a positive way.  Here's a link to the photos I took, which came out pretty well if I do say so myself:

I don't know if I would say this was the best setlist...I've seen some pretty nice sets.  Don't get me wrong, Portland was gifted a beautiful set of solid gold hits...all chart topping singles LIVE! played in their finest form.

What I was really digging was the change of pace.  While the rest of the band waited in the wings, (In my best "it's been a great 3 or 4 years voice) "Ol' Jim" simply walked out, grabbed his acoustic and started into Bermuda Hwy.  No greeting, No hello Portland, No bird's lament, just jim and his guitar :)

What got me with this set list was touch me 1 and 2 were played, in order, back to back.  It was like hearing shine on you crazy diamond 1-9 live for the first time...or close.  Does anyone know if they have done this before?  I think I saw in Miami they opened with 2 then followed with 1...but that doesn't really count ;)

The venue was f'ing amazing!  After visiting the winery and grabbing a brew at the on site brewery we managed to grab a seat in the rocking chairs on the covered front porch just in time for sound check to start. :)

Right after soundcheck we raced to get in line and managed to get there early enough to grab a spot front row right-center in the open area between speakers in front of jim's mic.  The best spot in the house in my humble opinion.

We got some great pictures at the show.  Really good quality shots.  I am in the PNW for another week.  And I managed to leave the cord for the camera at home :)  As soon as I get back I will get you guys some shots.  Some of them are stunning.

There were definately tapers there.  I remember seeing one setting up in a prime location.  It should be a good one to get as there was little wind and the sound quality was the best I've heard so far.

Another gem...good job boys!

well here we are, monday morning, back in los angeles rebooting computers and working in dark rooms.

yesterday, however, i was riding a bike to late breakfast through a GORGEOUS portland morning with some of my oldest friends.
in sooo many ways this was just a special day and weekend.

would that i had time to elaborate, but i must get this sequence out to the visual effects people post haste.  tonight when i get home, i'll try to decipher the scrawl of my notes and hook up some highlights.

no. 1:  sitting in line before the show in someone else's low beach chair, in the shade, with vespa-c, drinking a crispy tap beer listening to sound check was fucking heavenly.  and who was it that was playing "honky tonk woman" anyway?   :-?  ;D

This photo is from Portland, but did anybody see the eyes moving in Seattle????  WOW!! That was FANTASTIC!!!

Portland was probably the best show I've seen, granted Jack was heavily involved, I managed to arrive early to Edgefield (hello empty camp chairs..) but it was SUPER cool to hang out with Ms. Y  who also arrived pretty early, and then later meet Eric26 and his GF Carling (Be safe out there on the road back to Canada, eh!)  Opening act with John Callahan and JJ did a couple of tunes with him.

Sweeeeet!  Really great weekend which I'm paying for with a supercold right now.  My neck is aching, my brain is fried.  BRUCIE!! Thanks for all the gifts!!!  Wow, At Dawn.  And then in Seattle, EVELYN!!!  Seriously, EVELYN!! :D  Got to see & chat with Wizz and the rest of her crew, hope you had a smoooooth ride home.  I made it back to PDX by 2:30 (thank christ, it was a close call!)  Man.  Glad I took the day off.

COBRA!!!

That show was phenomenal, the venue made it one of my favorite concert experiences.  McMennamin's is certainly on the bus; plenty of delicious beverages everywhere, vineyard and expansive gardens, and Carl and Patrick playing a round of par 3 pitch n' putt a few groups back eliminating the need to ask myself what the band was doing before the show.  There was a lot of space up close during the set, which is an infrequent added bonus and of course the band played an unreal set, every song is so good you do not want the show to end.

there are about 18 layers of why this weekend was so special.

i love visiting portland.  beyond it being full of amazing coffee and beer and yarn, it's home to some of my closest friends.  without exaggeration:  i sing out loud the whole time i'm there.

saturday before heading out to edgefield was spent with friends at Genie's (12th and Division)--a tremendous breakfast restaurant with a full bar.  veggie benedict and bloody marys to beat the band.  and stumptown.  ah, stumptown.  oh, yes.

the overcast sky of the morning burned off to become a beautiful afternoon.  holy cats.  just stunning.

i headed out to edgefield to meet up with vespachick.  lovely!  fall hasn't kicked in yet, so the deciduous trees are still leafy and green for the most part.  alders everywhere!  when vespa-c pointed out that i could go into the hotel, buy a glass of beer and bring out to enjoy while waiting in line, i just about fell over:  sitting outdoors and drinking coffee or sipping a fantastic beer is something that i love.  (i've got all the best patio spots mapped out in my surrounding neighborhoods.  ;D )

before the gates opened, everyone is line was really excited, and giddy.  especially noteable b/c the average age up at the front of the line was about 35.  woo!  it was a great, fun feeling.

not long after we'd gotten in and found spots for the show, another pair of old friends found me in the crowd!  they'd travelled up from southern oregon and we knew to look for each other at the show.  wonderful,  wonderful, wonderful!

i realize this post is laden with superlatives and gushing, but i tell you, emotionally, there was a lot happening last weekend.  even after a full day of work today, i'm still feeling full-hearted.

in the course of meeting neighbors before the show, vespa-c id'd eric26!  everyone down around the stage was friendly.  how often does this happen?  really.  friendly.  and social.  and just happy to be out there.

during john callahan's set there was a squirrel leaping around in the branches of a tree stage left.  my friends not close to the stage said they couldn't hear his set.  we could hear him down front, but it was clear he didn't have the capacity to project much.  some plaintive, lovely, funny and heavy hearted songs.  when it was announced he would open the show, someone on the board posted a link to his performing "touch me someplace i can feel."  this is the number he closed with.  damn.  soooo good.

ok.  enough backstory.  the setlist has been posted so i'm gonna just list some moments i remember from the show...

-the inflatable cricket that's been on stage seems to be suffering a leak.  despite a re-inflating just before show time, he was flat before too long.  alas.

-bermuda highway:  vespa-c turning to me and saying, "are you kidding?!"  :D ;D  the sun was just starting to go down, dusk was coming on.  soooo beautiful.

-at dawn and it beats 4u:  well, damn.  the drive of patrick and tom in it beats coming after golden was terrific.  and those keys.  FANTASTIC to hear this again!

-wonderful man: big finish!

-thank you, too:  gorgeous!  at one point during the song a young girl climbed onto the stage.  there was a moment as everyone looking to see what she was going to do...then she just stood in front of bo's keys and danced in the light with her eyes closed.  after it was clear she wasn't going to tackle anyone, there were some smiles from the band.  one of the band's crew whisked her off stage without too much ado.

-gideon:  not sure what happened here, somedays some songs just strike a chord.  this was a catapult!

-PHONE-WOW.  sounded like there were a lot of people singing along with this

-easy morning rebel!  HELL YES!

--after magheeta jim explains that the band is going to slow things down and invites us all to go on a slow...adventure...   ;D

-librarian:  everything about this song in performance is so delicate:  every instrument, the lighting...  the song started with the stage mostly dark w/only jim lighted.  there was a low blue light behind him, but the rest of the band was in silhouette.  as the song grew, some magenta mixed slowly in.  by the end there was a gorgeous tangerine light in the mix.  sooo lovely.  boy howdy.

-dondante:  i love that carl's saxophone still has the sea creature stickers on it from those prom shows.   ;D  (note to bevil:  v3, yo.  ;) )  again the lighting at then end of this during carl's sax section:  beautiful!

-smokin from shootin: WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR, ANYWAAAAAAYYYY?!

-touch me pt 1 --> pt 2:   :o :o  the smoke from the stage was rising in smoke rings into the stage lights... as the band crouched down for the outro, jim sped up then slowed down the rhythym on the omnichord.  looked like he and bo were sort of bobbing out of each other's eye line...think "peek-a-boo."

-COBRA.  i'd seen this dropped from a previous setlist so was ecstatic to hear that opening!  vespa-c and i were moved to throw down some quality moves.   ;D

this 2nd set:
-cobra
-wordless
-highly suspicious
-run thru
-anytime
-obh
SWEET.  CRACKER.  SANDWICH.
*string of expletive laden superlatives here*
the momentum in this set was crazy!

this night's set was a stunner.  through and through.  maybe it was the locale.  or the weather.  or the curry being served...but the setlist seemed to suit the night and the crowd perfectly.

i'm a classic show-exiting-lagger.  i will wait til i am swept out by security.  i just love lingering afterward, looking for familiar faces in the crowd, talking to other people.  so edgefield was wonderful:  we didn't have to go anywhere.  i spent an hour after the show with my friends, swapping jonathan richman stories.

although i missed wizzard at the show, i did get a little bit o'multnomah falls over the telephone!   [smiley=beer.gif]

all of this and at the end of the night i knew i had another p-town breakfast opportunity, a road trip w/vespachick AND another show to look forward to on sunday.  took me a long time to fall asleep.   :D

*ok.  it's 1am.  the coyotes are going nuts somewhere in the neighborhood.  such a freaky sound.  i'll post about seattle shenanigans tomorrow.   ;)

Awesome post Ms. Y.  Thanks for taking me on a trip to what looks to be one of the more memorable shows from this tour.

I loved that you used the word magenta instead of purple.   :)  Librarian is a real sleeper.  It starts out meek, (like a librarian?) but then builds to a ferocius monster! (Succubus?)
I'm digging, digging deep in myself, but who needs a shovel when you have a little boy like mine.
