Black Mamba, I know it's already been said but, so completely jealous!
The concert was amazing. I am a fairly new fan and was sooo pleased to like a new band so much (doesn't happen often) that I play evil urges completely through over and over. And loving that album still didn't prepare me for how good they are live. between their song rang and how they just completely jam out every song they played last night I was in awe! you could just feel the music across the audience. I have never seen them live before, are their shows always that good? Truly they rock!

tucucca

I stand corrected. Sounds like your lobbying paid off.

Yes. And yes they do.
The wind blew me back, via Chicago, in the middle of the night.

Ok, so I am coming out of the fog from the KC show and back home in Denver last night. The KC show was great. Lots of new fans which is a little weird if you've been around a while. I think a lot of the new fans don't get the old stuff and both shows were really long and a good mix of new and old. I liked it but I could see people getting restless.

That said, MMJ rocked it both times. in KC OBH rocked the place down, beers flying etc. In Denver it was great to hear so many people howling with Wordless Chorus.

My wife summed it up at one point during the show. "Your favorite little band isn't so little anymore..." They're not, MMJ is the freshest and biggest band of our time.

Hope they get another DVD together!

Great post. It sounds like you sat right in front of us. Actually, the line from the upper North lot started about 2:30. You had to go down the trail to find us. My wife and I were 4th and 5th.

We couldn't believe how long the soundcheck was. Eight songs and then a half hour break and then three more songs (One of the EU songs was done twice).

Another guy in line mentioned he got to see a soundcheck in another city, and they took requests. If I got a chance, I would request "A Quick One". It really shows the band's versatility and I wish they would drop it into their shows more than once a year.

QuoteSo last night was surreal for me.

I showed up at Red Rocks around 4:05 and parked in the Upper North Lot and was first in line up there, in fact there was nobody up there. I crack open a beer when all of sudden this white van pulls up next to me and shouts "are you waiting in line for MMJ?" When I said yes they asked if I wanted to go to the "soundcheck party" I was like FUCK YES and they said get in. I asked if I was going to lose my place in line and they said Nope, you'll be in the show!!! Fucking amazing, I guess they were with some radio station and the record label or just dropped down from Heaven. So I get the laminate and me and about 15 people are sitting in the first 5 rows when MMJ comes out. Surreal, they came out and played "Look at You" and then asked for requests. Some people throw out some tunes and they decided to play "Nashville to Kentucky." Then they asked for some more requests and I threw out "Anytime". They were still deciding what to play and people were throwing out more tunes and I said "Cobra." Jim James basically looked at me and starting laughing saying that they weren't going to play that for soundcheck and saying it was too hot out for a song of that magnitude or something to that effect. Then they played "Bermuda Highway
" I think, it was a slower song. Again they asked for some more and I said "Anytime" again, probably because for the last two weeks, no matter what I was doing I was humming that song and it was in my brain, so good ole Carl was like "can we please blast this?" So sure enough they turned it up to 11 and ripped it up. Fucking Awesome. Then they played "I'm Amazed" and that was it. Surreal, nothing like that has ever happened to me and it was so Random.

So then we had to wait at the gate, the ramp entrance next to Ship Rock but we were on the top portion where as everybody else waiting in line was at the bottom. So we got in first and I got 5th row center and got to save spots for about 8 friends. Fucking Awesome.

The Black Keys were great and loving life playing at Red Rocks, for the first time I believe but I could be wrong.

Then MMJ came on and sure enough they opened with "Anytime" and it was such a cool feeling that the song that I have had in my head for about 2 weeks now, and the song that I asked for at the Soundcheck, was now being played for real as the opener. I felt so special, no joke, I felt that it was because of me. And then they played "Cobra" as one of the encores! Fuck Yes! I know I'm fluffing myself but I don't care, everybody has a story like this and this is mine. It was a great night with friends and a dream show.

Thanks My Morning Jacket

Hey all -
first post though i have been reading for a while. been super into the band since 2004.  i am in rocky mountain national park following the red rocks show last night ( my seventh show i think. there may be more i can't remember exactly). this band moves me about as much as the phish did but in a totally different way of course. I adore them with all my heart. Last night was simply epic. At first the show didn't seem to start with as much energy as I would have liked, albeit with an anytime opener. But things were paced beautifully and it all came together and grew throughout the night.  The Way that He Sings, War Begun > Lay Low, and the last eight songs of the night were incredible. the run from phone went west through the end of the night continually built and built to incredible levels. my gf wanted cobra and steam engine and they dropped both. they played so many of their huge songs it was astounding to here them back to back to back. the encore was over the top. suspicious live is the real deal. and the dancefloors was gravy at that point following shaky knees.  chorus>suspicious>cobra>engine>dancefloors>run thru>holiday.  wtf.
going to be hitting berkeley, portland (live there), seattle, and new years of course.

"A Quick One" is also one of my all time favorites.  But I wouldn't call it out at soundcheck.  I think they might be a little offended if you didn't pick one of their songs.
I'm digging, digging deep in myself, but who needs a shovel when you have a little boy like mine.

TheBlackMamba

Thanks for the cool responses.  I'm usually good at checking setlists and such, so I might have not asked for "Anytime" but it was so random and I just shouted out what was on my brain.  It is a bad ass song though.  It was so dope that they played "Cobra" as one of the encores, I don't think they play that as much any more . . . I know they played it in Louisville.

I also forgot to mention that after they soundchecked everybody that was there got an Evil Urges poster signed by the band.  Jim James signed his name and the number 37.  I wonder what that is all about?  Old sports jersery number perhaps?  Once again, it was a perfect night.

Tex

First off, i need a recording of the show. Amazing time had by all of us that were there. Row 8 middle. BlackM, that is a great story. Glad for you.  If anyone saw these guys open for Bob D at the Rocks last year you knew last night was going to be the heat.

Did they start Cobra differently than normal? All around great mix of new and old. From listening to Highly Suspicious more I have to think this song is a funny, "Ok you guys sound as mean and surly as possible and I will hit the highest note possible while singing about surprises.....peanut butter pudding surprises..."

Epic show and now the epic recovery continues. Ive got a pic up from last night on my site. Camera needs updating but the blue stage lighting was perfect backdrop. First post here too.

^^It's a PT/RT invasion. I love it.
Because if there's one thing that goes well with shooting zombies it's a Dolly Parton cover-el chode

Sorry if I missed it, but is there a complete setlist somewhere...the one on the first page is missing Dancefloors?

My third MMJ show this week and I was breathless...they get better and better and were clearly inspired at playing Red Rocks.  Dallas tomorrow, then DC and Philly coming up.  I can't get enough!
God sure baked a lot of fruitcake, baby.

I would have loved to see them at Red Rocks. I almost made the trip, I was deciding between there and Louisville and settled on their hometown. Its funny you mention Dancefloors as gravy, because thats how I felt about it at Louisville. Once they said goodnight and went into Run Thru I figured after that they would end it with One Big Holiday. Then they went into Dancefloors, and it was totally unexpected. It was also almost too much, I was freakin' exhausted lol.
Say friend, you got any more of that good sasparilla?

bo dereks tits

eh, i doubt it.

ItsAllWorthwhile

Still on a high from the show last night....unbelievable.  This was the 4th time I have seen them this summer and they didn't disappoint.  We flew in from Louisville after seeing them last week and still on a high from that show.  This was my first Red Rocks experience and it was a surreal night.  Not knowing exactly how GA works, we got there early, had lunch at the grill, and planned on walking around the grounds but at about 3 PM, we saw there were a few people in line at the lower lot entrance so we jumped in line behind about 10 people. We experienced the "sound check" of 8 songs and 3 more a few minutes before they opened the gates.  Even though we weren't lucky enough to be able to see them, it was extraordinary to hear them from just a few feet away.  After entering the gates, I was brimming with excitement after landing seats in the 3rd row, center.  I had been that close to them at the Ear X-tacy record release back in June which was amazing in itself with 500 of Jacket's most loyal, but being inside this historic venue, it didn't feel real.

The Black Keys were great, playing about 10-12 songs.  Hadn't seen them before but after seeing their brief but fantastic set, can't wait to experience them at their own gig in Louisville in October.

When Jacket took the stage, the place was nearly maxed out.  So glad they had such a full house to witness the nearly 3 hour mind blowing night.  We couldn't have asked for a better night; perfect weather,  glorious breeze in our faces, shining moon, humbling venue and soul touching Jacket experience.

Driving through the Rocky Mountain National Park today listening to Jim's haunting voice with the windows rolled down and the miraculous landscape around us, this is a weekend that will not soon be forgotten.  Already looking forward to making my return to Red Rocks.  Thanks Jim, Patrick, Tommy, Carl and Bo for another gut wrenching, magical night.

yeah, truly awe inspiring. the breeze, rising moon, and wonderfully paced set was a thing to behold. its wonderful to see suspcious be such a quick monster live. love the electro bass level in this , is it triggered by bo? it rattles you. the groove of amazed, touch me 2 (straight up throb at the end), and cobra was sublime.

this band is astounding.

That's a very cool story.  8-) :)
How loud can silence get?

Sooo worth the 16 hour drive roundtrip!
We rolled up to the upper north lot at about 3, cracked a beer, then a black caddy pulls up and asks if we want a private sniffing of Jim's beard! I never thought it could happen to me! ;D
Anyway, fabulous show. Tha Black Keys were AMAZING. I've heard a couple of their albums and was impressed but holy shit they rocked it! I was actually on my way to the merch table and Dan (guitars, vocals for black keys) was standing by the wall just outside backstage chatting with a few people. I yelled 'give us a good show!' He said' yep, we will'. That was my real brush with celebrity!
We were on row six stage left right in front of the speakers.  The sound for the keys was awesome but when MMJ came out it was alittle off for a couple of songs. They quickly took care of it and after that it was just mindnumbingly LOUD. Great show, I was totally spent by the time it was over. I finally met up with crispy and some of his buddies, Hi guys!
Was annoyed at the amount of texting going on during the show.
Highlights for me were steam engine, phone went west, dondante, dancefloors, laylow, run thru...I could go on! Would have loved to have heard the bear or strangulation but with 29 songs I really can't complain. I'm just sad it's over :'(

Old age and treachery will overcome youth and skill.

Crispy

Whew, just got back last night after the big trip to Colorado. Awesome to finally meet you mtngurl! And NJtoKY and Ted, great guys.
I'm kicking myself for not getting in line early enough to get down really low, I ended up in the 12th row (sounds good but Red Rocks rows are deep), but at least it was close to center. The show was incredible, I just felt like I was the only one around me going nuts while I could see all the peeps below totally rockin it. I don't know why I should feel any sort of disappointment when I have the ability to see the best live rock band out there today, and every time I see them I just want to go to the next stop and see them again!
The Black Keys killed! It was great to see everybody there get totally into the opener.
Run Thru absolutely blew me away!
And it's fun to see Highly Supsicious turn into the Evil Urges crowd favorite. The giggles, that long high scream - so amazing!
"...it's gonna be great -- I mean me coming back with the band and playing all those hits again"
