Thx tbd, much love from one Head to another!
And one more shout out to my boy Love Dogg- def felt that old-time spirit from you too, dude, thx for the props in your post.

Its funny tbd, because I think the Jacket scene is soooooo young (not in the age of people that see shows, most are mid 20's- 40'2) but just in the fact that it hasn't really fully developed yet.

The band is still growing, changing, morphing stylistically. And I think they are getting more and more fans as the word spreads that they bring it live.

But its funny, because the scene doesn't yet have a defined asthetic or ethos, which is refreshing in a lot of ways, and also kind of grin-inducing, because I'm used to hanging around super-surly Deadheads and Phishheads who just bag so hard on the bands, but are still charming and lovely in their own way.
Hanging out with the Jacket folks on Sat nite was a trip, because everyone is so nice! Seriously, they are so kind and considerate and humble and loving, and its great, but also a bit weird for me, because I'm so used to being around surly Heads. lol

I think the potential for MMJ is immense.
I see their next tour as being a high-water mark in terms of the scene really growing and attracting new music-lovers.
But as anyone who was seeing Phish back in the mid-90's can tell you, the potential for a bigger audience can often bring with it a whole nightmare of bad vibes and ugly "wook" behavior that can really tarnish a scene and make it suck.
I hope, for all the good people I met in Louisville this weekend, that doesn't happen.
But if it does, seek out the Deadheads. We can tell you all about it. Believe me. We've been there, and we know.

Much Love.

True. All of the Jacketheads and Forum peeps I've met so far have all been a pleasure. From Louisville to NYC! Hopefully they feel the same way about me! Ha!

QuoteI've been a long-time lurker here, but never posted.  I've been a huge MMJ fan ever since I heard Z and seen them three times in concert.

I went to Bearno's after the show and met Penny Lane, Soulshine and others from this board.  I was the guy in the Devo costume.

I drove down from Cleveland with a friend of mine and we stayed at his uncle's house, which is about 20 minutes outside of downtown.  We knew about the costume contest before the show, with the chance to go onstage as a prize, so we got there right at 5:30.  There were four categories: sexy, scary, unique and MoF member.  I tried out for the sexy category, and to my amazement, I won!  I was suprised to win becuase there was a smoking hot girl in a border patrol costume to beat (and the guy who was running the contest told me afterwards that she complained to him that she didn't win).  I was going to be on stage with the Monsters of Folk!  Each of the winners was allowed to bring a friend with them, and we were to meet in the lobby at 9:10.

The show itself was incredible.  These guys make such an amazing sound together.  Before I heard about MoF, I knew next to nothing about M. Ward, but this show was officially made me a huge fan of him.  One Hundred Millions Years was a commanding solo performance, and the full-band rendition of To Save Me was a highlight.

Before I knew it, it was time to go backstage.  Now, while the onstage experience ended up being an incredible, once-in-a-lifetime experience, it came with a huge, huge catch.  We had to stay backstage for over an HOUR until it was our time to go to the stage for the encore, meaning that we missed an almost 45 minute chunk of the concert, including Smokin for Shooting.  We knew it was about time to go on when a roadie came back with a setlist in his hand.  I tried to get a look at it, and my eyes scrolled down to see what the encore was, and I damn near lost my mind.  As soon as I saw the words "DETROIT ROCK CITY" in block letters, I knew exactly what was about to happen.

It was about quarter after 10 when it was finally our time to go to the stage.  We were told that we could watch the encore from the side of the stage, and then go on the stage with the band for the last song.  We were led down a series of hallways and up a flight of stairs, and as we got closer the music was getting louder and louder until we got to the top of the steps, turned a corner, and saw the guys in their KISS costumes, which is a mental image that I will never forget.

All of us stood on the left side of the stage as we watched the first 4 songs of the encore, including a kickass Losin Yo Head.  Finally, they started playing "Rock and Roll All Nite" and we all run on stage.  For the first few moments, I could hardly believe it was happening.  I would look one way and see Mike Mogis dressed up as Ace Frehley standing a foot away from me, then turn around and see a crowd of thousands cheering.  It was absolutely surreal.  I made my way over (or danced my way over, that is) to JJ, and as I stood behind him, he was a towering figure in his platform boots.  I danced some more over by him, when one of the stage crew (wearing a mask), grabs me and tells me to go the front corner of the stage in front of JJ.  I did so, and danced some more, and even tried to headbang a bit until my flower pot hat fell off! The song comes to an end, and as the band is walking off stage, I go up to Jim, put my arm around his shoulder and say to him "That was awesome!" which he smiled at.  I get directed toward the exit, which takes me out to the side aisle.  I start running down the aisle, and everyone is giving me high fives!

After all of that was over, I make my way outside and meet up with another of the contest winners (the robots, who won the unique category).  The robots (who were a couple) were from Lousiville, and they were planning on going to a place called the Magnolia Bar, where they were having their own contest, so me and my friend went with them.  When we arrived, there were several people who recognized me from being on stage.  For the contest, they cleared off the bar and all of the contestants walked across it in order to be judged.  I walked across and got a pretty good response, but didn't win there.  My new robot friends, however, won the top prize of $100, and bought us several rounds.

After that, they dropped me and my friend off at Bearno's, which wasn't too far from where they lived.  I knew about it from reading this board as I was getting ready for this show.  I got there after the afterparty had winded down, but I still had a great time meeting you guys, and it was a perfect nightcap for an unforgettable night.

Awesome, Awesome Post, and an Awesome screen name as well, I'm guessing you are a Pearl Jam fan.  The robots were a definate highlight from the show, they brought me great joy throughout the evening.

I posted pictures on facebook but am having some issues posting them here from work. I'll try to get that sorted by tomorrow.. I think I snapped a pic of everyone (even Lifewasted in his Devo costume).

I can't top the previous posts about how magical the night was, from seeing Patrick and Tommy, getting to share it w/L Dogg, meeting up w/new people I've wanted to meet for a while (Soulshine!), seeing old friends, making new ones (Lifewasted, marcusaurelius, flyguy).

The show was terrific, not sure the Beacon show on Sunday could come close. I had never been to the Palace, but it's a really beautiful venue, really scenic inside, good sound. Even though I didn't like that I had to check my camera, it was NICE for once not to have everyone in front of me holding up their cameras and phones snapping pics (thank goodness Goose had his iphone!) Highlights for me were Smokin from Shootin and Another Travelin' Song. The KISS costumes were terrific and Jim definitely stole the show. He WAS Gene Simmons. The others looked great, but not like Jim. Also, I am fairly certain that these shows are turning all non-Conor fans (or on the fence Conor fans) into real fans. I know Crazylove will say it was M who stole the show, but I think it was Jim's night, and he and Conor really carried things.

Bearnos afterwards was perfect. The setting was intimate but people could still do their own thing, go outside and hang out and smoke, order food, talk or listen to the tunes. Candace and Dylan were really on as usual, and it was exciting to see LD get up there with them. The songs they were playing were icing on the cake because it was more like a celebration of what brought us all together, and so many great songs that move all of us, and it doesn't get any better for me than watching them and singing along to Ophelia. For me, it means as much as seeing MOF do Detroit Rock City, probably more. **They NAILED Don Dante for those of you who stuck around for the second show.

Want to especially thank Ms Yvon for the sticker!! I had been meaning to send you my address for a long time! I really want to call you by your porn name now (Candy Corn).

I am still coming down and re-adjusting to life post-Halloween show. Hearing Smokin from Shootin left me craving some Jacket stuff, now I relate to all those critics who were let down by the fact that it wasn't a Jacket show. Luckily, I'll get to re-live some of this on Sunday night at the Beacon.

Summing up, glad to meet the new people, I hope you'll stick around~! Even more gladder to see the people I already know and love. I made a great new friend and sister in music-hood (Soulshine). I got to watch Jim James with someone I love, then celebrate the night w/so many others who mean more to me than they'll ever know.  I had been really down a lot in the weeks previous, but now I realize that we all have the power to get our souls stirred a little, and there are people out there like Jim James who will see to it that it happens and I'm lucky to have you all to share it with. I feel rejuvenated in a way.

Those of you who didn't make it, you were there in spirit :-)

I would be offended if you DIDN'T offend me! JK  In all seriousness, I'm glad you and Crazylove managed to find each other. One of you always seems to wander off!  ;D ;D  (i will never forget receiving a text message from you ONE HOUR into the show "where's my wife? where is everyone" LOL)

That's really not very close to what it was. It was more organized into individual solo sets than that. Here's (I think. . .), an order a bit more accurate than the one above.

Say Please
The Right Place
Soul Singer in a Session Band
Vincent O'Brien
Smoke Without Fire (Connor and Matt)
The Big Picture (Connor and Mike)
We Are Nowhere and It's Now (Connor and Mike)
Golden
Temazcal
Baby Boomer
Man Named Truth
One Hundred Million Years (Matt Solo)
Chinese Translation (Matt Solo)
One Life Away (Matt and Jim)
The Sandman, The Brakeman and Me
At the Bottom of Everything
Goodway
To Save Me
Lime Tree (Connor and Jim)
Bermuda Highway (Jim and Will)
Wonderful (The Way I Feel) (Jim and Matt)
Look at You (Jim Solo)
Map of the World
Smokin' From Shootin'
Dear God (Sincerely MOF)
Hit the Switch
His Master's Voice

And then the encore above is correct. That's not even close to perfect, but it's a step in the right direction.

Ok, so at my age, I think a person can get kinda jaded after so many great concerts.  I saw the Beatles at 13, I once went to 5 Mellencamp shows on 5 consecutive nights, I saw Springsteen 3 times in one weekend,  I stood side by side with Jim's Aunt front and center at the MMJ waterfront show just to name a few...........but OMG Monster of Folk may have just changed my life :exclamation
I can't thank Miss Y and Wendi enough for giving me the chance to sit with them down front and soooooooooooo close to Jim!  And yes, Miss Pennylane, I do have a new found love of M. and his amazing abilities, and I do think he is quite an extraordinary musician with his style of guitar picking, but there is no doubt that is was Jim's night!
And I just have to say this for you Dylan, what is up with his hair?!  I like the all glammed up look, but Jim, the hair......bring it back.  I can even handle you parting it and gluing it down, but I miss your beautiful hair!
LoveDogg, I love you!  You and I are together in our own galaxy!  You really do get it, I'm glad that I can be honest and open with you and you don't think I'm some kinda "crazy"!
And I definetly think Jim was on that galaxy with us on Smokin and Look at You!  I am reliving those moments and many others.
Meeting up with all of our "old" jacket friends and making the new ones added to the thrill of the evening.
I don't know if there can or ever will be in my lifetime another such glorius night,  It was like all the stars came together(except for not getting to sit with my wonderful husband and share at the same time) and made the world right for one moment in time.
Sorry for waxing so poetic, but that is what Sat. night was.  It was poetic, it was wonderful, it was warm and fuzzy, it was some of the best people in the universe meeting up, it was a night that I will always remember.  Thank you Monsters and Friends.

I love this thread.  It makes me happy and sad all at once.
I'm digging, digging deep in myself, but who needs a shovel when you have a little boy like mine.

Hello guys and gals,
I had a great time at the pre-party, show and after-party at Bearnos. It was a pleasure meeting all you wonderful people and if this world could be filled with people with the compassion and love that you guys have, it would be a far better place. Hopefully I wasn't too much of a drunk and annoyed anyone. I got to the show a couple songs in as they started right on time. I did set up my taping gear from an excellent location my buddy Goose hooked me up with, thank you my dear friend!
Toby, Dylan and Candice are always a pleasure to be around... so attentive and ready to listen to my beer rambles. Toby, I'll hug you anytime man! It take a few beers for me to loosen up and get chatty but once that switch gets flipped, it's hard to turn it of. Good seeing Yvon all the way from LA, the Beautiful Penny from NYC, SoulShine from I can't remember where, thanks for coming to our fair city. Brian from the Knox whom I hadn't seen since Jim was solo at the Rud over two years ago, TEO and Nancy from up north as well as the awesome young man, Dark... kid, you rock more than you know for having your eyes so open to the world around you at such a young age. I wish I had 10% of what you have mentally when I was your age. I feel I was just weened from the system 5 years or so ago.
I felt naked not taking my camera and just took the wife's point and shoot that still managed to get confiscated but that's fine, the directions were right there on my ticket and i still tried to cheat the system. At least they didn't get my gear I was taping with, YES!
I've given the show a listen and i like how it sounds for being clipped on the little sign designating my are as VIP (thanks again Goose!!!)
Like I said, I came in during Connor's "Soul Singer" and "Vincent" was after that so in the setlist above that needs to be flip flopped. Sorry I missed Right place and Say Please... but the rest of the recording is on it's way down the pike!
talk to you all soon!
much love and respect to all my friends here and for not making it look weird to be friends with folks you meet from the interwebs!

OH yea, the wireless network at the palace was named, "Interweb". I can't help but to think Jim had something to do with that!

what a great night! KISS encore was unforgettable!

Oh yeah, I almost forgot to thank KC and Cory for the ride to Bearno's. And the ride back to the brown with Soulshine and Markus in the taxi.
And Miss Y, I will be putting the rampant badassery on my car, Thanks!  Hope I don't get called into the prinicipals office, even so, it will be worth it!  I'm listening to the Monsters at my desk right now, thanks to my outstanding hubs!  I have kids taking tests, I think it will absolutly help improve their scores ;D
Cory, did you tape Candace and Dylan as well?
Yeah, it's good to have friends like all of you.
