come on people - it's Tom Petty, one of the greatest American rockers of all time.  The whole show would be one, giant, euphoric sing a long.  The boys have to be honoured to be playing with one of the greats - one of the best song writers and live acts of all time.   It really does make you realize, MMJ still has a lot more they can accomplish in their careers to get the stage Petty is at.

Good job guys! I hope everyone can make it to these shows!  Beer, weed and friends = Tom Petty, perfect for a summer night in NE.
God damn those shaky knees.

I'm with BH on this one.

1) It's only 3 dates
2) Petty tickets aren't that expensive
3) Petty puts on a good show
4) At least you have the opportunity to see MMJ in your city, I have yet to see MMJ in Pittsburgh

I've seen Petty three times and told myself I'd probably pass on the next show, but I'll probably go since DBT will be opening.
That's motherfuckin' John Oates!

QuoteSo far this is the only NE show so even though its a opening gig, im pretty fucking excited.  Plus its an opening gig for TOM PETTY!!, cmon the guys a legend....plus i'm pretty sure Tom Petty has always tried to do his best at keeping his tickets fairly cheap, so i wouldnt be surprised if they go on sale for 45-50 bucks.

Saw Petty in toronto last year and it was an awesome show. Go to both shows and you'll get 3 hours of MMJ. I'm already planing on flying in for this. Depends on the rest of the tour announcements though.

MMJ please please please play Massey Hall in Toronto!

I just e-mailed a friend of mine who lives near Mansfield.  He is a huge Petty fan.  He e-mails me back "great, but I am not all that familar with MMJ".  I told him go early, you will not be disappointed.

I would be so stoked to be able to attend one of these shows! I've really been wanting to see Petty for a good while, before he kicks the bucket. I was practically raised on Full Moon Fever. MMJ is going to be around for a loooonnnngggg time still to come, whereas ol' Tom probably has 10 years  or so before he turns into an act like the Stones who should give it up. Its always a major drag for me when I go to a show and the opener blows, so seeing MMJ open for one of the greats would be an amazing experience. Its an honor for them to be able to do this, as it is for anyone who is able to see them

Seems like a pretty sweet show to me! Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers are a rockin' live band, great fun. I think MMJ is a smart, appropriate choice for an opening act - their music should win over a bunch of new fans in the Petty crowd. I'd definitely try and see this show if it was near me.

I would SOOOOO be all up this business.  I'll check out Petty in the Gorge though.  Can't get enough Gorge.
My jacket's gonna be cut slim and checked

QuoteWhat the hell are you guys talking about!??!?!  It's three dates opening up for TOM FRIGGIN PETTY!   They will win over lots of new fans just like they did with Pearl Jam.   The other openers on the tour are Joe Cocker, Drive By Truckers and Crosby Stills and Nash.   Sounds like a great gig to me!   Tom Petty amphitheatre tickets are never THAT expensive.  I wish this was coming to St. Louis.

If I was on the east coast I'd be excited that they were in my neck of the woods in August.  I'm sure these won't be the only dates they will be doing around that time.
I say this and breathed a sigh of relief. They are no longer a full tour opener. I love TP, but yeah these will not be cheap which puts me out of the running. Be careful what you wish for Dave, this would be at Riverport.

AMightyCaporal

this is so incredibly tempting! I would love to see tom petty.... and of course, the jacket
Oh I'll never say I knew you, but my heart can't wait to meet you on the other side

this is awesome.

tom is going to get jim higher than a giraffe's vagina.

see ya there.
Is there a doctor in the house tonight?

Sorta excited and bummed at the same time. Just seeing mmj at all is great but I'm being a greedy bastard and I wanna see more of them haha. I'll probably go to one of the shows in Mansfield. My birthday is the 20th so that'll be neat. Petty ain't bad but I'm not going there to see him. Hopefully mmj gets some good time and hopefully more headlining dates are announced.

This is GREAT news!  I was planning to see Tom Petty (FINALLY!!) this year anyway, as he has for many years been one of my heroes and now that I see that of the 3 shows MMJ is opening for him, 2 of them are right in my back yard..... that just sweetened the deal immeasurably.  I'm going to both!!

I'll still make my way to MD to see a proper MMJ show too.

your glory and wisdom shine again.  3 extra hours of live jacket with possible tom petty guest appearence.  What's there to bitch about other than prices?  Even prices aren't worth bitching about anymore because it's expected that every big name artist that is somewhat a legend is going to charge close to 100 per head.  Hopefully somebody tapes these sets.

mahg33ta

well I was one of the ones bitching and after a bit of reflection I'm over it.   I hate internet posters who complain about everything and I became one for a minute there.

I'd still rather have a full MMJ show, but it'll be fun, it'll be good exposure for the band, and maybe just maybe (PLEASE) they will squeeze in some headlining gigs in the NE before / after this.

johnnYYac

Like mahg33ta, my intial reaction was a letdown, and I'd much rather they play alone for 5 hours at the foot of my bed.  But I will probably cave on at least one of these two Boston area shows.  Petty was a decent opening act for the Grateful Dead and supporting band for Bob Dylan back when I was a younger man.  At their age, and with a long life ahead of them (knock on wood),  MMJ have a great opportunity to get some new fans.  I will have an opportunity to convince some of my friends to give em a try if Petty is part of the package.  And I'd love to meet some "local" forum folks.

I'd love to see Jim (or Patterson) up there jamming with Tom P! They put on a great show  :)
but come on...there's nothing sexy about poop. Nothing.  -bbill

of course, MMJ isnt opening the Pittsburgh show  >:( :(

At first i was stoked about this just because it was another chance to see MMJ.

But after reaading soem of the comments by excitement has come back down to making more sense.

Everyones right one they say tix are going to be cha-ching. PLus, seeing the guys do a 60 minute opening set in a football stadium doesnt sound all that exciting.

As far as making new fans at these shows? I dont know, i dont think its needed. And looking at the other openers, its like Petty influenced bands.

All of that being said, if anyone has a kick down tix i'll taken them.
