Those are going to be some expensive tickets.

Anywho... good for MMJ!

Agreed.  Maybe good ole Tom'll let the boys play for 90 minutes or so ;)

Arrghh-  Actually, I'm pretty crushed by this news.

I think this means the chance of MMJ headlining a Boston show this summer has just dropped to 0.

Not a big Petty fan, but regardless, now it means paying bigger $$ for 45 minutes of MMJ.

I'm fairly "meh" about this

1) the only show in my area is at a huge arena with them not headlining
2) the tickets for an aging classic rocker are going to be extremely expensive
3) i'm not a huge tom petty fan to begin with
4) MMJ is better than an opening act!

Late in 2008 I went to a show where Wilco opened for Neil Young. I paid throgh the nose for the tickets (nearly $100 a piece), and definitely wouldn't have gone if I wasn't also a huge Neil fan.

This is pretty horrible news. No offense to Mr. Petty, but I'm not paying huge cash to see 60 minutes of MMJ when they should be playing 2-3 hours for about half the money. These guys are not a warmup band. They're the whole fucking show.

Hopefully these are just a couple shows because the boys are fans of Petty, and they'll be playing MANY NE dates in addition to these. If they don't, I'm going to slice somebody's head off.

el_chode, we posted at the same time - my thoughts are pretty much identical...

Yeah, I think I will pass on this one!!   I am not paying big bucks to see them play for an hour tops.

i totally agree that mmj is not an opening act.  and i'm also hoping that these 3 dates don't rule out mmj adding northeast dates to their own tour.

but i love tom petty, saw him a few yeas back w/ the pretenders @ pnc bank & it was a great show!!  mmj followed by tom petty could very well be mind blowing.  i'm definitely tempted.

chode, i saw your dissapointment breakdown post coming a mile away, too....ha ha

btw, TP puts on a great show but I get what you're saying...I see DBT are opening for them, too and I wish it was a DBT/MMJ show.
but come on...there's nothing sexy about poop. Nothing.  -bbill

Petty is good live.  But, I remember seeing him back in 89 and the Replacements opened up.  They only played about 45 minutes or so and I was so letdown.  I am sure I would feel the same way seeing MMJ play a short set.

What the hell are you guys talking about!??!?!  It's three dates opening up for TOM FRIGGIN PETTY!   They will win over lots of new fans just like they did with Pearl Jam.   The other openers on the tour are Joe Cocker, Drive By Truckers and Crosby Stills and Nash.   Sounds like a great gig to me!   Tom Petty amphitheatre tickets are never THAT expensive.  I wish this was coming to St. Louis.

If I was on the east coast I'd be excited that they were in my neck of the woods in August.  I'm sure these won't be the only dates they will be doing around that time.

Hell yes. This is going to be awesome two of my favs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Amen sister.  DBT and MMJ need to share a stage again.   :)

BH is right, this is a huge honor for MMJ.  But I understand the disappointment for those of you who were hoping for a full-on MMJ set.

If it's any consolation, when Pearl Jam opened a few dates for Tom Petty back in '06, they got a pretty long opening set - 18 songs or so.  So hopefully y'all will get the same deal.

And think of the possible MMJ/Petty collaborations!

Petty is awesome, i'm actually pumped about this.  Its only a few shows, good exposure (not that they need it) probably better for DBT...but still this is one of my dream lineups.

I'm pretty sure this means there will be more dates and they will be filling in around this. Cmon Philly or Camden on a hot ass August day!

Murph

So far this is the only NE show so even though its a opening gig, im pretty fucking excited.  Plus its an opening gig for TOM PETTY!!, cmon the guys a legend....plus i'm pretty sure Tom Petty has always tried to do his best at keeping his tickets fairly cheap, so i wouldnt be surprised if they go on sale for 45-50 bucks.
