Don't forget - opening up for Tom Petty, playing Levon Helm's midnight Ramble, Carl releasing solo work.

It's a good year for MMJ

I don't think it's their best year by a longshot.  There seems to be much less buzz about MMJ.  The fact that they didn't play Lollapalooza, Bonnaroo, or ACL indicates this.  While Evil Urges was a solid album and seems like it was part of the distant past, it's their most recent, and in no uncertain terms, it cannot compare with either Z or It Still Moves. Maybe my opinion of 2010 stems from only being able to see them once  :(.

I'm looking forward to a new album in 2011 and many more shows!

I can agree with the fact that there may not be as much buzz around MMJ as there was in say 06 or 08, but i have to say I completly disagree with the fact that Evil Urges doesnt compare to ISM or Z. I enjoy all 5 MMJ albums equally, and each for different reasons, which is partly what makes the band so great in my eyes (that and their un-paralled live show).

Also, the fact that Evil Urges is their most recent album is completly normal for MMJ, they always wait at least 2 years between albums:

Tennessee Fire - 1999
At dawn - 2001
It Still Moves - 2003
Z - 2005
EvilUrges - 2008
New album - 2011

They did far more this year on top of what's mentioned. If were going solely off of shows and released material, I dont think 2010 is the best year. T5 is the epitome of 2010. In 2006 Z(still fresh from 05), Okonokos, and NYE (RS 5th best show of the last decade). I honestly think one epic show is more exciting and unpredictable than T5. Not that t5 isn't AMAZING. Or when the newest Bandmates were added. I just think there are too many epic things to pinpoint any one year as better than the others

I'd say 2005 was their best year; when I saw them 6x in 6 months (Birmingham, Athens, Knoxville, Nashville, Cincinnati, Louisville)
Jim brings all his love, passion, energy and mystery to the stage and says, "I'm right here."

They fulfilled a dream of playing at the Ramble, Jazz Fest, and a ton of other great shows. Their choice not to play Bonnaroo (a shitty over commercialized festival headlined by KOL and DMB-worst year yet) was a good one because they would have had to have outdone their 2008 performances without a new album. They keep getting bigger and bigger, and EU wasn't anyone's favorite MMJ album, it created a buzz so that even the people who didn't care for it are excited about the new album. My boss even learned about JJ last night when he went to the Beacon thing, and he said he was blown away, (think he played Look at You?). Word keeps getting out about these guys, and not just from me. 2010 was a HUGE year for them but certainly not their biggest. They're not a festival band, they're not umphrees mcgee out to play the big festivals year after year....they were always always always more than that.

I'm excited for the future.

but come on...there's nothing sexy about poop. Nothing.  -bbill

lasvegas

08 was a pretty damn good year for them.

Is there a doctor in the house tonight?

While I will not be in attendence at the T5, they can hardly be considered epic.  Bonnaroo late night-that's epic.  3+ hours of greatness.

jmk

Um, no, these shows are most definitely epic.

bold992006

Radio City was EPIC.  I heard it from the man himself on friday night, he said that was his favorite MMJ show ever.

I think 2008 is hard to top..new album, tons of buzz...Bonnaroo, Radio City, MSG...that is the year they really took it to another level...that was really the year people who didn't know about MMJ found out.

Right now I think they are kind of just creating buzz for what's to come.  2011 will be the year..new album, tour..right now they are just kind of riding the success they had in 08'.  that is what is allowing them to do what they want to do now.

An argument over which show was more "epic".  ;D

They must be doing something right.

The most "epic" thing I ever seen was closing with It's About Twilight at the 40 Watt in 2005 with a bunch of screaming, sweaty lunatics in a smokey, sardine can!

While the TTF and At Dawn shows may not be epic in terms of length, anyone of us in attendance will tell you that they were all kinds of epic in terms of the performance.

I've been a fan and going to shows since 2004, and this is my favorite year of MMJ.  The show spring and summer shows I saw (Merriewather in May and Philly in August) had a seriously majestic quality to them, even if they were shorter than the '08 tour shows.

And T5 thus far has been off the hook.  I was originally just going to attend the first two T5 shows, but they were so damn good that I rearranged things to travel back to NYC for the last two.
My heart can't wait to meet you on the other side.

headhunter

and that's a good thing.  looking forward to seeing you at the remaining shows!

they're plenty epic and your post is plenty bullshit.
(you just said, you're not in attendance so how would you know?)
i was at bonnaroo 2006 and 2008 and this is JUST in those ballparks if not more because it's not just the shows, it's the pilgrimmage of hundreds of MMJ fans congregating from all over (Australia, Japan) to experience that. So because the sets are an hour longer, doesn't take anything away from this run. Plus J Quaid all week, and a down the street performance by Carl.. (the only thing missing is the rain!)
but tell yourself whatever you want to feel better..
