So, who is aware of this amazing band?
They never really got famous, but still made three superb albums in the seventies worth checking out.

I've read somebody on the board here say he was a fan, but don't remember who.

My fav. album is Third/Sister Lovers, but you should be able to get the first two albums together on one cd.

Great band out of Memphis with Alex Chilton formerly of The Box Tops fame.Pure power pop band with an edge.Cult favorite status here in the states.

They took the poppier leanings of the Velvet Underground and ran with it. I really enjoy "Sister Lovers" but I really haven't branched out much into the other two.
The UK band This Mortal Coil did a few Big Star covers and Jeff Buckley and his band were notorious for doing an especially high-octane version of 'Kangaroo' on the Grace tour.

The Jeff Buckley version of Kangaroo is to be found on his live album Mystery White Boy.
Also, Jeff Tweedy covered Thirteen and Elliot Smith covered both Thirteen and Nighttime. The influence on Elliott Smith in particular is very clear.
I also love the song Alex Chilton by The Replacements, it's really cool
