What's up with the star system?

I just have to say that it is a little demeaning having "Junior member" by my posts.  How does one gain stars?  Is it solely based on senority on this forum?  Can you get stars for doing stuff like breaking news of the palace show or the George Harrison album?  If necessary I can produce my ticket from the Planetarium or starting bragging about "back in the day".  I've enjoyed reading the forum for years and have only recently started contributing because I found the star thing a little intimidating.  Can anyone help me out with this?

Just keep posting. It's as simple as that. You only need 50 (I think) to be a senior member. It's just a bit of fun. Nobody's worth more or less than anybody else.

yeah it's just a thing that comes with the forum. the stars are automatically added at 50-100-250-500 posts. the one thing i could change is the member name so feel free to suggest something mindblowing ;)

Come to think of it "One Big Member" sounds a little dirty.

That's exactly the demeaning attitude that I'm referring to.  Some of you five stars guys should revisit the "This is Not America" documentary and check out what Jim has to say about music snobs.  How music snobs in the American indy scene worried more about their cliches and friends than their music.  And that Jim didn't want his music to be about that bullshit, we wanted to get back to music.  I'm sure that the band appreciates your time and energy but not when it's concentrated on looking down your noses at other people who enjoy their music.  They wanted anyone to feel welcome to come to their music, and some of you are screwing that up.

Oh for heaven's sake. We're not music snobs or any other kind of snobs. CC baxter's already explained the stars are part of the website package. It's nothing to do with the music or anybody's feelings about or knowledge of the music. You could have mine if I could give them to you - they're just not important. Your views are just as important as anybody else's and I don't believe any member would do anything to suggest otherwise.

I think maybe you misread something that was said in jest.   I know of no snobs around here.  Stick around for a while, and you'll see.

The stars do not denote a hierarchy - this ain't the military.  It just lets you know who comes around a lot.

That said, I know more about music than everybody. ;)

I don't think we qualify as a snobbish American indy scene... I'm not even an American and i can hardly understand what an indy scene is! It's all about the music for me, and I know it's all about the music for most of us here (actually everybody). If you want to accuse people people of looking down on you, you should know (and say) who you are talking about...

We appreciate everyone here, you are welcome and I don't see why you think you're not. Those remarks were just very harmless jokes, and not the harsh sarcastic jokes made on other forums, it's all in good fun... but I can't tell you how to feel.
And the five star people are good people, you should see if you choose to stick around.

I hope this entire quote is a joke, because I don't usually tell people to grow up or to do something much more painful and seemingly impossible, which is what my intitial reaction was upon reading your post. I stress the word "was" because I took a couple of deep breaths and then realized that you must be quite a young person (No, I don't mean that as an insult - just as an observation.) This is a music forum, man. No one here actually looks at the stars, just so you know. As I type this I honestly don't have a clue how many stars I have, if any. And this board is virtually snob-free, to the point of almost being weird. Why and how you could ever be intimidated by graphics on a screen is beyond me, to be honest, but I guess that's your right, so I'll cease and desist now.
