I just got a bootleg where the volume is really low.  How can I get the volume to a reasonable level on CD without making it sound like crap?  Thanks in advance.

if you use iTunes, they have a volume adjustment if you right-click on the song info.

You can also use the master volume control on your comp. i think, but im probably wrong.Sorry for probably being no help. :-/
As long as you keep a straight face...

You need yourself a wave editor. I use ROXIO software as well as CAKEWALK. ROXIO you can pick up for about 99 bucks now. But you can edit sounds, build the volume and recut a CD. Plus the unlimited use of burning mpgs, photo editing, and building slideshows with music. All fairly simple and straight forward.

Available at stores near you or over the web.

thanks for the tip, jonjon.  I have Roxio Videoware, I use it to burn VCDs and make slideshows.  Can I use it to manipulate sound, too?  Or are you talking about a different program that Roxio makes?

BTW, I have cakewalk sonar too, but for some reason EVERYTHING I listen to or record through it sounds like tingy shit. I was looking forward to doing some digital recording but I've settled for the old school 4-track until I figure this cakewalk stuff out.

another technical question...
What program should I use to rip waves files off of the CD?

I just realized that's going to have to be my first step and I don't know how to do that either.  Thanks for helping me out!

I have ROXIO Easy Media Creator which does all that.

The wave editor is in the tool section and is called(of all things..) Sound Editor. You open it, select open and the CD track directly from the CD drive, it pulls the data in, you adjust the volume through the parameters secton, and save to your harddrive...cause you can't reburn the original disk.

To pull tracks from CDs, there is a section called(ta-da) Copy Track From CD. You open it, select the drive of the CD, and you can either copy it to your harddrive, or burn to a disk in either original CD form or mpg form.

Yep, media creator creates VCDs as well.

I played with SONAR for a while and Cakewalk even pushes it as the Cadillac of lowend software. I reverted back to Cakewalk due to the simplicity, plus it allows me to still run my MIDI gear while an audio track is playing. Actually, I can cut the audio track directly from the MIDI stuff, but I like the live feel a touch better than strictly digital....even though it's all digital. The best is that I can still cut/paste, loop, sample all I want. I'm only limited to disk space. But Cakewalk can crunch that to save space too.

I even went out and bought a few hundred dollars (ok, about 700, but no telling ok) worth of M-Audio gear, but after a few days of trying to lay a single track, I got pissed and said screw it. Right back to Cakewalk again.

Let me know if I can further help ya.

Thanks for the advice.  Unfortunately I think that my Roxio software is for strictly video, so perhaps I'll pick up the whole package when I can afford it.  I think I can find a way to get the volume up with one of the many sound programs on my computer, I was just wondering what the best was.  If I ever figure it out I'll shoot you a copy of the disc if you're into early mmj.

BTW, does this wonderous program that you refer to also allow you to split long audio files into smaller tracks?  If so, I might have to buy it today!

Not a problem. If youre' MAC user, I'm extremely limited cause I haven't used one in years and have forgotten everything about them. If  you're a PC user:

1. Click start and select My Computer.
2. If your drive letters(c:, d:, etc) don't appear,
then click the little plus sign(+)next to my computer
   and they will appear.
3. Click the CD drive(usually D:) and the list of tracks
will appear. Since this is a bootleg, the CD should not
   be protected.
4. Single click the track you want to hightlight it, hold
down either of the mouse buttons and drag the track to
your letter C:. This will drag the audio track to your
   harddrive.
You should now have the track on your main C: drive and if you click the C letter, you should be able to find the track somewhere down the list. Double click and it should play. If it doesn't you may have a protected CD and it will take something like ROXIO to extract the data from the CD.

If you manage to get it to yor C drive and can't edit it, you can email it to me and I'll boost it, clean it and send it back to you. :)

Yes, you can load huge tracks and then expand or get a closeup view of the track where the different songs seperate. You stop the audio and cut the track from that break backwards to the beginning and save it. You then have individual songs instead of one long show.

I'm a newbie, but fast learner MMJ fan. Earlier stuff I would love. My only exposure has been Bonnaroo and I was immediately hooked. Thanks to a tent neighbor, I'm now a part of a kewl forum with a bunch of kewl people that have technically helped me with stuff as well.

Let me know how we can swap and I'll include some blank CDs to experimentally burn.

You can also do most of this stuff in iTunes, i believe. With more or less precision.
