There bear is present on all the albums, and video's so there's a symbolism, and I'm guessing it's Grateful Dead related.
JJ last night was sporting a stealy medalion on a short necklace, so he's obviously a Dead fan.
Anyone know the significance or meaning of the bear(s).
BTW last night they rocked hard, but were a littel rusty from not playing, I'm guessing tonights show will be a little better and by the time they get to NYC for NYE, they'll be back at full boil!!
Somebody has to know what this is about!!!
Or hazard your best guess.
I just think it's cause the Bear is awesome. Do they really need a reason beyond that?
It's a bad ideaaaa...............
There was a bear (the one pictured on ISM) in the barn where they used to record in Shelbyville, KY in the early days. Not sure if that was the origin, but that bear has been around longer than the band... ;)
So I googled 'The Bear' and found this:
http://www.kididdles.com/lyrics/b004.html
It's like Bizarro World on Seinfeld. A website with a close spelling of my name on here and a song called 'The Bear' that is not the 'The Bear' which we love.
Weird. I think I might change my name.

Do you mean a "Steal Your Face" medallion? Odd to me because I don't think they ever played a Dead tune or referenced the Dead at any time.
Maybe a sign of more great things to come on NYE. That was the Dead's biggest party of the year.
;)

According to Wikipedia, The Dead played an eight hour show on NYE in 1978 at the Winterland Ballroom in SF. In fact, the very last show that was ever played there before it closed.
{holds flashlight to chin} .. and it was exactly 30 years ago to the day from the MMJ NYE show.
creepy man.
but yeah, im seriously pathetic for sitting around thinking of this crap. I just cant wait for the show, and can't think of anything else.

i just listened to 12/29/77 also from winterland and also epic.
as for the bear...everyone knows, jim was attacked as a child by a bear, and as he lay in the hospital recovering, he had a dream of a burnt down bar and finding a magical jacket in the charred remains...

I had only heard that story in pieces. Interesting.
Well, the Grateful Dead didn't exactly play during all of those 8 hours. There were 2 or 3 other bands that played before them and a lot of in between set celebration. But the coolest thing I remember reading is that after the shows it was close to morning and Bill Graham had breakfast for everyone.

Bill Graham had pancakes made for everyone for breakfast.
Indeed, Bill Graham had breakfast for everyone. It was all part of his plan for a dusk till dawn amazing evening . The Closing of Winterland is one of the finest Dead shows out there. Other acts included the Blues Brothers, NRPS, and the Flying Karamazov Bros. I have the CD set and the DVD and this is a must have for any deadhead (the extras on the DVD are worth it alone!).
One other notable show played there was the amazing The Last Waltz!

They have a trippy light show and, particularly on slower numbers like "Golden," James' voice resembles Garica-ish unpolished, high and lonesome voice.
"I'd do 'Candyman,' there's something about that song that's so awesome," James told Jambands.com in 2005, when asked what Grateful Dead song he'd cover on the tenth anniversary of Jerry Garcia's passing. "I'm more a fan of the real structured Grateful Dead songs, the acoustic Grateful Dead songs. On 'Candyman,' it's just like all the harmonies and all the amazing guitar parts and the lyrics...the whole thing. I'd do that or 'Brown Eyed Women." I'm not even that huge of a Dead fan, but there's just something about Garcia that was so sweet and so awesome. The first time I ever heard him was on pedal steel on 'Teach Your Children' — pedal steel, I think, is one of God's gifts to people. I can sit there and listen to that song over and over and over and it makes me want to have kids and get married and cry. Just the way he emoted was to me more important than any song that he wrote or anything in particular. It was just his force and I think that's why people loved him so much. There was just something about him that was insanely magical."

The Bear is the keeper of the dream time, and stores the teachings of dreams until the dreamer wakes up to them. Many tribes have called this space of inner-knowing the Dream Lodge, where the death of the illusion of physical reality overlays the expansiveness of eternity. It is in the Dream Lodge that our ancestors sit in Council and advise us regarding alternative pathways that lead to our goals.
If you like bears, you should maybe look into some books on interpreting dreams; especially if you're a heavy dreamer. If you need a lot of sleep, it may be Bear working. This female receptive energy, for centuries has allowed visionaries, mystics, and shamans to prophesy.
The strength of Bear medicine is the power of introspection. Bear is not one to make snap decisions, nor one to ramrod or force into any position. Bear takes in all available information, takes it into his quiet place, studies that information carefully, gives it careful thought for a while, and then reaches his own informed decisions based on the facts at hand. Bear is the one who says, "I have to think about this. I'll be in touch later." You can rely on opinions coming from a Bear person as being well thought out and thorough, and based on the facts given. To accomplish the goals and dreams that we carry, the art of introspection is necessary.
Bear is a fierce warrior, especially when protecting their young. They appear to be lumbering and slow, but can have lightning speed when threatened. They love fish when they can get it, but they also eat berries, honey, etc. Bear people like home and shelter, and like to be warm and cozy.
great pull on that quote.
all i want is a dead cover tonight.
if we get a Candyman tonight i don't know how i would be able to contain myself.
I heard they were playing "remain in light" in it's entirety tonight.
Oh my god, if they ever cover "Brown Eyed Women", I hope I'm there.
I've always thought of the bear as Jim's Familiar or Power Animal. It is both a wise companion and guide through the spiritual journey of life.
I dunno about all that, but I'm down with the bear. I like his presence. =))
I assumed along with the more general and Dead-specific references, there was also a potential tie-in to "bears" in the gay community (basically, meaning more heavyset, non-stereotypical guys): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bear_community
i smell a term paper

I think they're paying homage to this man:
Owsley Stanley (born Augustus Owsley Stanley III, January 19, 1935) also known as The Bear, was an underground LSD chemist, the first to produce large quantities of pure LSD.

It's weird this is the
exact vibe I get from the band. I'm a bit of a new listener, since last summer, but ever since it's been straight Jacket (I probably should have phrased that differently). so many of their songs just have this feeling and really put you in the mood. And that goes both ways, Strangulation can really bring you down! ;) But anyway, it's an excellent quote.
After many listens to The Bear it's pretty obvious it is indeed a reference to the Gay bear community and cruising. It's actually a very sad song when you look at it that way. But beautifully written.

Since I didn't write the lyrics I can't say exactly. But it's pretty rediculous to ignore the repeated subject matter of cruising. "Into the woods" is a downright sleazy cruising song (on your knees, open your mouth, I'm gonna give you what you need and you're gonna like it), The Bear is another song about cruising, as is Anytime. The BEAR in Gay culture in NOT about "Non Stereotypical gays", it's about men who are "Bearish" in frame, bearded, hairy and VERY much like Jim. The lyrics are also way too personal to be written by the whole band. They're Jim's feelings. And if you cannot read between the lines that Dondante is about a friend of his that obviously lived a Gay, sexually promiscuous life and paid the ultimate price for it, then you're in denial. Read back over all the lyrics. Almost ALL of "Z" is full of inuendo and metaphors.
Please and nooooo!!! ??? ???
If you rearrange "The Bear" you get "Eat Herb". Just sayin'....

So you start off saying that "since you didn't write the lyrics I can't say exactly" but then end up essentially telling me I'm in denial because I can't "read between the lines" in Dondante. What make you the authority on this? Just because you're gay, you turn all of the lyrics to pertain to your lifestyle? One of the greatest things about music is that it's different things to different people, but every one of the lyrics you just used (if they are actually sexual innuendos) can pertain straight or gay people.

I agree with you and was gonna throw in my two cents but it was getting late last night. Artists mention all the time in interviews that fans interpret songs to make them about themselves. But guess what, the songs aren't about you! Also pretty sure it's well known that Dondante is about a friend/ex-band member (Month Of Sundays I think) that committed suicide.
I used to like bears. I liked that bears were all over MMJ posters and shirts and album covers.
I've been planning a hiking trip out in Montana (read: grizzly country). I've read a few books now about bear attacks in preparation for this trip. I don't like bears as much as I used to anymore.

I actually never thought that about dondante.. but yeah makes sense. BUT I cannot find anywhere in that song that says the person who died was leading a gay, sexually promiscuous life? (WTF??)
ALSO what if your a bearish person but not gay? Does that still make you a bear?
Looking back over this I want to clafiry and apologize to all for what seemed like and aggressive and way to pointed statement. I do not by any means assume because I'm gay that any member, fans or message in the lyrical content is limited to that interpretation. This music has become so personal that in retrospect its hard to not connect it things you knowir understand. I did make some rediculously "know it all" types of comments and apologize to all. This is not like me and certainly not How wanted to begin this year of concerts and meeting other MMJ fans. It was a bad day and I'd had a few glasses of wine and behaved improperly. I'm sorry to al android hope to meet up with many of you on this tour. I'm really not an asshole. I promise. Sorry again.

PS- how random is it that I search for an image of a peace sign and find a peace sign AND a bear in the same pic?
Bet she wouldn't be so cozy with that bear if it didn't have that medieval lip leash thing hanging out of it's mouth. Jeez.
Reading this thread has been an IQ lowering experience. Thanks DejaVIew

I consider us all brothers and sisters here. We get along, we cry, we love, we disagree, we agree, we fight, we make up, we hold grudges, we ignore, we laugh, we turn each other on, we hold each other up, we post pictures of each other, we quit the Board, we return to the Board, we talk about our loved ones and our love of music and cars and women and men and big hands and not-smoking and drinking and baseball and football and politics and on and on and on...
I say some really clever shit here and I say really stupid shit here (often not on purpose); I post really cool pics and really stupid pics; I make really great decisions and really poor decisions; I offend people and I enlighten people- sometimes all in 1 post! ;D In the end, I would be happy to stand with any of you on the rail at a show and melt together (and personally I don't think I need to join a "fan club" to have that right;sounds a bit like the American Express Platinum card to me ;))

You, My friend are an incredible human being and I look forward to meeting and melting together with as many other great MMJ friends as humanly possible. It's so wierd how only a year ago MMJ was a band that had existed under the radar for me and then appeared on a cartoon and completely blew my mind and changed my life, my view on all modern music and reinspired me to start writing again. After absorbing all the albums and all the dvd's and tv appearances I swore this year was all about seeing them live if they went on tour and with tickets to 3 shows already and Charlotte being 2 hours from my house I'm trying to spend the entire summer following this groove. I feel like I'd been in a musical coma and the Jacket really just woke me up, inspired me and made me feel love and passion for a band like I haven't in decades.
I really do look forward to meeting many of you out on the road this tour and hope to host as many as possible in my home in Virginia for a MMJ weekend prior to the Charlotte show. I really think Jacket fans would be an incredible bunch of friends to invite into my home and share the love with. Thanks again for being so kind. :) :dankk2:
That is truly Awesome, just don't invite Tracy over unless you're ok with being woken up at 5am with him standing over you in his tighty whiteys playing the solo to "La Villa Strangiato" on his......."GUITAR"

Hell, at 5:00am ill still be sitting behind the piano in my briefs running through "let it be" or "comfortably numb". Propped up and more than a bit tipsy. But I'm a damn good host till I drop. He sounds like he'll be right at home. People always tend to call my home 'the sanctuary". This would be the first event at the new house in Virginia and I can't think of a better vibe to fill my home with what I see to be one hell of a great group of hearts like ya'll.

Oh. My God. Lets not go anywhere near there ever again. ;D But truthfully, I'm starting to plan for the gathering in VA. They wrote " if u host it they will come" so I'm gonna do it. If Louisville I'm going to try and meet as many of y'all as possible so we can start sowing the seeds for our party. But if there's a Llama, everyone has to hug it and take pic with it. We could make it Victorian like on Okonokos. This is really turning out to be the best summer of my LIFE!

FYI : It's an alpaca, not a llama. THESE KINDS OF THINGS ARE IMPORTANT! Alpacas come in all shapes and sizes and personalities.

They are pretty friendly for alpacas, all they do is look at you unless you have food though. And they only spit if they get pissed off :P
yeah, but why would an alpaca even get pissed off? They are awesome.

Who knows for sure about any of the band members' sexual orientation, and of course, we're all free to interpret art however bests suits us, but in any case, Jim and MMJ are definitely appreciated by a diverse and loyal audience, and I think they're completely groovy and 2011 about it. Cool little article. Thanks for the link. I knew they did actually have a following in the gay bear community, but didn't know anything was out in print. Thanks again!
Sure! Nice, huh? If you by chance happen to know the answer to the second comment on that page, please let me know!

Trust me, not a pic passes by that I don't check. But I'd say its a light dusting of furr, strawberry blonde, that glistens in the sunlight. Just like the rest of him. Perfect.
That sounds right. It's a shame we don't have any proof though! (We don't, do we?)
Hi all, I'm new here, but a long time MMJ fan. I've been very amused by this thread. I've just always thought the bear was a symbol of Jim. He does look like a bear to me, not neccesarily a gay bear, just a hairy, thick bear.

Yep. Glorious. Jim is THE Bear. Beautiful, powerful, and pretty cuddly looking. Lol
