High Sierra Music Festival 2011 - Initial Lineup (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6CMLg1N7bBo#)

I absolutely cannot believe it.  This will be my 11th High Sierra....first place I saw MMJ too.  Absolutely the best festival experience you could possibly imagine.  I've worked at the fest over the years doing numerous things, it's just the most laid back, perfectly run festival out there.  And you couldn't ask for a better location.  Not to mention...real flushing toilets and tons of showers.

Hrm, I was holding out for a Red Rocks show > New Mexico (at-some-ampitheater-my-hubs-thinks-is-great> back up through SD>LA>SF>home.

Prolly wishful thinking.  Therefore, how do I decide whether to do High Sierra??? Also, why have they not announced on their website yet??? janky stoners ???

That video using OBH got me extremely stoked for Hangout and Roo. I'll be holding out for some sort of AL>TN>HOMETOWN>OH/IN>Chicago.

Sweet!!!  The best news I've heard in months!!!  Woohoo!  I've been wanting to go to High Sierra for years and this year I'm so there!!

I guess I'll have to start checking out some of those other bands.  Who all do you guys like besides MMJ?  I'm not familiar with a lot of this lineup.  I'm sure it's going to be awesome though.

myself, really excited about MMJ and Ween obviously, 2 of my fav. bands period, never thought I'd see ween on the high sierra lineup.  Also, love me some dumpstaphunk, maceo parker.  Last year, Orgone, beats antique and the pimps of joytime were all festival favorites.  ALO, Dr. Dog, and Neko Case will all be great.  And pretty excited to see Delta Spirit on the bill.  Pretty sure Bo produced their latest album, maybe he'll sit in with them.  Also...this is only the initial announcement.  HSMF always does it kind of weird, they'll announce a big chunk of the bands and then have a couple of groups of additions in upcoming weeks/months.  I suspect several more names to be added, including some bigger acts.

High Sierra is all about the sit-ins, and I suspect we'll see some awesome collaborations as usual.  Only about 7-10K people usually at HSMF, weather is usually absolutely perfect.  Easy access in and out, you can easily hop in your car and cruise down to the grocery store or drive into Quincy and go to a restaurant.  We usually take daily trips to the river for some swimming.

The real question....will MMJ also play a late night show like they did in 06.  I'm really hoping they do, but kind of suspecting they won't.

There is also the possibility of a work shop.  HSMF does workshops every day, and it somewhat of an interactive thing between musician and band, some Q&A, some music, some insight.

yep!  The Ice Cave was actually the High Sierra Music Hall, a small indoor hall where they have late night shows.  They decorate it up every year, do something different with it year by year usually, in 06 it was a little winter wonderland with snow flakes and icicles and such.  MMJ also played on the Grandstand, which is the main stage and is of course outdoors.

I imagine when I hear the show  that it's a scene reminiscent of the planet Hoth mixed with joy and music, kinda like the North Pole only no elves or reindeer and  less songs about Xmas.

They'll headline the grandstand one night, ween is closing Sunday so it won't be Sunday. Headliners usually get a couple hours minimum, I expect a full length set for MMJ. Still holding out hope they'll do a late night as well.

Nice! That's a really good lineup too! It's been a long time since I've been to a High Sierra, and I always had a great time. I wonder what Ernest Ranglin sounds like these days.

I'm pretty sure I won't be going to this though, and hope it's not the only appearance they make in Northern California this year...  :-\

Ugh...I know. It's a few things. Doing the full festival idn't gunna happen, with a newborn and a 2-year old at home. I'm not gunna wook my kidz out and take 'em quite this young. ;D Aside from that, the timing is just bad this year for that weekend.

High Sierra is SO MUCH DAMN FUN TOO, and that is a REALLY STRONG LINEUP! I'm pretty bummed, and just hope that there are some other shows that they schedule in the area.

I hear you Bill.  I will say, that high sierra is hands down the most kid friendly festival you could imagine.  We brought all 3 of ours last year, and will be doing so again this year, although ours are 12, 10, and 9.  But, there will be plenty of kids of all ages, all the way down to babies. (obviously a new freshy newborn is a different story)  They have a huge kid zone where they do fun stuff with kids, kid stages, kid parades, and on and on.  There is also family camp, where we will be setting up shop, and it gets (relatively) quiet by 10 pm.  Kids and high sierra go hand in hand.  It ain't no bonnaroo.

Dr. Dog & TBA on July 1...what are the chances that the TBA is MMJ?

^as much as I would like to keep the dream alive, I say slim to none. Looks like Dr Dog is the headliner for that late night show, the TBA will be an opener. Can't wait for another glorious 4th of July weekend in Quincy!

Though we haven't actually purchased our tix yet, we are planning on coming down for this - with our NEWBORN (and possibly 9 year old step daughter).  Okay, I guess by then she'll be almost 8 months old, so not so newborn, but whatevs.

Looking forward to it!

I've also got another fantasy going that Jim or somebody will be at Preservation Hall again this year.  They've got one more artist to announce for the Midnight Preserves series...

Looking very forward to High Sierra!!

Great news. We'll definitely be in family camp again this year with a group of friends with kids of all ages. If your step daughter needs kiddos to play with, my 12 y/o daughter, 10 y/o son and 9 y/o step son are always willing to make new friends. High Sierra is an adult and kid playground!

Any idea what day MMJ is playing?  The same My Space page cited for pinpointing their day at Lollapalooza has MMJ playing on Thursday, day one of this fest, which seems odd.

after looking at this page, I don't think that's right, it also says 4 p.m.  No chance they get a 4 pm slot, they'll be closing on the grandstand whatever night they do play.  I think they just plugged in the first day of the fest because they're not sure yet what day they're playing.

edit:  after poking around on the high sierra message board, people seem pretty confident MMJ is playing Saturday night, not sure how they came up with it, but that's what I'm reading.

I have to say that anyone who is a MMJ fan and can make it to this festival (especially if you can get the Roll Call VIP access), is a fool not to. This will be my 10th year at High Sierra and with MMJ being one of my favorite bands of all time, it's going to be an incredible year there. I've seen MMJ about 10 times now, with 3 shows coming up this summer, but I have to say High Sierra will be the most pleasant, relaxed atmosphere to see them. You're guaranteed to have an up close, non-claustrophobic experience in a beautiful, mountain setting. You can bring your own drinks to the stage (as long as it's not in a glass bottle), you can camp within a few hundred yards of the stage, and, aside from the gas in getting there, it's one of the most affordable festivals out there.

If you're already going and are on the roll call, I think it's definitely worth the extra cash. Not only do you get cheap(er) Lagunitas beers all night, right next to the stage (bout $3 each), but you have nicer porta-potties right there, even more space, and are pretty much guaranteed a spot right in front of Jim's amp. If I didn't already work backstage, I would buy the pass in a heartbeat.

With beer, pretty sure they don't. I think it's all draft only. Not sure about the wine. Kind of doubt it. I think it's mostly just a "tasting" party, as opposed to a vending opportunity.

High Sierra sets streaming on fatmusicradio.com (http://fatmusicradio.com/wp/).  You can also listen live on KVMR Nevada City and KZFR Chico.

Actually, I just checked and they're NOT scheduled to carry the MMJ set.  :'(

We've been spoiled with vid/aud streams from fests, but guess not tonight.

High Sierra was awesome...pit passes were killer.  Plenty of room to move around...was no more than 10 feet from the stage for the entire rampantly badass set!  ;)
