Title: MMJ @ Metropolis, Montreal, July 12 * Roll Call!!!
Post by: johnnYYac on Mar 23, 2011, 11:36 AM
4 hours from Casa Yaca in NH.  GA all the way!  T5 North!  Who's with me?

BTW- post-9/11, I believe you need a valid passport to head to Canada from the US.  Used to be a driver's license and birth certificate were all you needed.  Correct me if I'm wrong.

johnnYYac +1 (or an extra ticket; stay tuned)

Ahhh I'm having a tough time deciding if I wanna hit up this show plus Toronto or just Toronto. Six hours is a long drive the day right after an MMJ show -- butttt the drive would be so much sweeter knowing that another Jacket show awaits me at the end of the rainbow.

Comes exactly a month after Bonnaroo, so it could be a nice little north of the border MMJ Bonna-versary, or anniversa-roo if you will. Might have just talked myself into both.

I wish I could say I'll be at this one, but alas, I can't make it. Anywho, I just remembered that Metropolis is the place that I saw MMJ open for Wilco in 2005 -- great venue! I didn't even wait in line, and got right up against the stage (no rail at that one). Most people were in a hurry to get a balcony spot!

Just got me 2 tickets GA, only $38.25 and $5.40 fees = $43.65 ea.  Being GA, I didn't need to jump on it right at noon, but what the hell!  Wooooooooooooooooooo!

So much for will power and impulse control. Just bought tickets for Toronto and Montreal! It's weird to me that I've seen MMJ seven times and not once in my homeland. It will be nice to attend an MMJ show where I don't have to deal with the stress of crossing any borders!

Hope to meet you in Mount Royal!  We can have a preshow gathering at one of the strip clubs along Ste Catherine Street.  I remember from my college days, "come see the fabulous shower show!"  ;)

Did you ever make it to Portland last October?  I think you were one of the Canadians hoping to make it to the State Theatre.

Not this Canadian, unfortunately. I invested all my MMJ eggs into the Ramble/T5 basket. And what a basket it was.

Here's hoping for a great Tuesday night in Montreal! Time to start the countdown...

Yes, you'll need a valid passport to come to the Great White North (or anywhere else in the world for that matter, but I'm not sure about Mexico).

From what I heard from friends, the Metropolis is an awesome venue. What I can tell you all is that Kool Haus is not. In fact, I generally dislike to hate the place and the immediate surrounding area. KH is located on a desolate strip near a section of underdeveloped waterfront. However, two blocks north of KH is a great area, where you can "oil up" before the show and then walk 10 minutes to the venue. One thing that is good about the KH is that it has easy sightlines, but the acoustics are suspect at the best of times. Beer prices are decent (for Toronto), but they mostly serve swilly domestic.

I was sure MMJ would be booked to play at Toronto's Massey Hall, one of North America's most revered - and best - concert venues. MOF played a great show there last year.

The Metropolis is a great venue.  It only has capacity for about 2,000 or 3,000.  It has a main "GA" area and the upper balcony.  There are no reserved seats.

Not sure yet if we'll go see them in Montreal.  We're trying to get tickets first for Toronto.

Also, with the Toronto and Montreal dates being July 11 and 12, respectively, I fully expect Jacket to perform at the Ottawa Bluesfest, which will take place from July 5 to 17.  As such, I could see Jacket performing either July 9, 10, 13, or 14.

Booked a cheap room literally right next door to Metropolis for $48 plus tax, w/shared bathroom facilities.

The wife and I opted to see Jacket in Montreal as oppose to Toronto since Montreal is closer to Ottawa and we love the Metropolis.  So count us in for now for Montreal.  Hopefully Jacket will come to Ottawa as well to play Bluesfest, which I think will be likely.

I dont know what to do. I've had a blast during each of my visits to canada (most of them concert related) but I'm not sure if I should hold out for more tour dates closer to me or snag some tickets to this/Toronto. Hmmm. It's hard to plan my summer not knowing what is to come.

I'm not sure the dates of either Montreal or Toronto's jazz festivals, but the latter is often held in July. Montreal's is one of the most revered on the planet. Also, the Blue Jays may be playing home dates around the 11th, so that could make for a good few days. Montreal has the better venue, but of all the famous cities in the world that I've visited, both rank near or at the top.

Joey, if you do come to Tranna, then we should meet up and talk about the NHL playoff results at a pub before the show:) I'm planning on getting tickets at the door regardless if it sells out. I rolled the dice doing this last summer with the Black Keys and it worked out fine, and they sold out Kool Haus.

In the middle of July, Montreal hosts the internationally renowned Just for Laughs festival.  It's a great time to be in the city.  You can buy tickets in advance or get discounted tickets for the same day.  Multiple venues across town will show stand-up performances and one-hour plays.  The festival starts on July 5 and ends July 24.

Or, you can hire a car, take the bus or train, or fly to Ottawa - which is less than 2 hours by car from Montreal and 4 hours from Toronto - to attend the Ottawa Bluesfest, which will be occurring from July 5 to 17.  I've mentioned this Festival on a few occasions here, given its proximity to Toronto and Montreal and the fact that Jacket doesn't have any dates booked around these shows.  The Bluesfest is quite affordable and it's a great festival.  Here's the link to the site: http://www.ottawabluesfest.ca/ (http://www.ottawabluesfest.ca/)

I'm seeing them at Bonnaroo. Was thinking of going to the Montréal show as well but I'll hold yo see if they're playing at Bluesfest since I live in Ottawa.

Bluesfest is announcing their lineup towards the end of April and they always have some great acts. If you don't go to MTL or TO I'd suggest coming to OTT! MMJ outdoors just seems right.

I will be there with my lady friend, and a few people that I've recently gotten drinking the kool-aid...
Methinks I haven't posted on this board in well over a year... the new album and related hype will have me back here a lot more often.

This is only the second MMJ show I'll have the pleasure of attending, the first being MSG 08-09.. so I'm really stoked!

Metropolis is indeed a great venue.  I've only been there once before but really enjoyed myself.  In fact here's a funny story:

A few years ago, I took a trip to Montreal for a Jurassic 5 show at Metropolis.  Just a weekend trip with some buddies, we took some mushrooms at the start of the show.  It was great, the drugs were strong, J-5 killed it and put out such great vibes of love and harmony.  When the show ended we were overwhelmed with positive energy and on top of the world.   However, we were still tweaking, and left the concert with nowhere to go next.  I walked out of the building and noticed the bar next door "Les FouFounes Electriques".  I'm like "Guys, I've heard of this place, I hear it's a rock bar, let's go get some pitchers here and chill to some classic rock tunes while we come down from this trip."

So we wandered into FouFounes' and ordered like, twice too many pitchers as needed because we're on drugs and can't do math.  Then we started looking around the room and noticing the decor, the clientelle, and the general vibe in this place... It was not just a "rock" bar... it was like, a full-blown GOTH bar... everyone was in black leather and spikes and they had like, paintings of bodies hanging on the wall and shit.  The music was so hardcore and intense.  No offense to anybody who digs this kind of place, but it was totally not my scene, and being a mild-mannered suburban kid on mushrooms, it was way too much for me to handle... it's the only time I've ever been on drugs and gotten "the fear".  But we had all this beer to finish drinking because we were cheap and wanted our money's worth so we stayed there and freaked out all googley-eyed at all the goths partying around us...

So back on topic, if you are attending this wonderful Metropolis show in July, beware of FouFounes' next door, it's a freaky-deaky place! :D

Ha! I had preshow beers at that bar, or I did if it was the same bar in 2005. It didn't seem that scary or goth to me, but then I wasn't ON DRUGS.  ;D ;D ;D

There's nothing scary about goths. They don't feed enough to gain any muscle and all are in need of mega doses of vitamin D. I could take 10 of them using one hand (while holding a pint of IPA in the other).

Only 2 weeks to this show!  We need to discuss a good preshow bar for forum folks, oui?

Any locals with suggestions?

If you know you're going and want to bring a friend, I have their ticket, an extra at will call.  Let me know.

I'm staying at a hotel right next door to Metropolis- Hotel Villa (the red sign).  Well, left next door is perhaps more accurate; you can see the entry to the Metropolis in the far right of the first photo.  It sounds a bit sketchy, but can't beat the location or price.

Fun things to do in Montreal:

1. On Sunday, especially if the weather is nice, go to Parc Mont Royal.  It's a massive park at the foot of the mountain.  Every Sunday people gather for what is popularly known as Tam Tam's.  I hate to use the term drum circle to describe it because that doesn't do it justice, but hundreds of people gather to drum, and thousands of others gather to check it out and be among good vibes.  Seriously it's the most chill time ever.  Also, L.A.R.P.ers (live action role play) have medieval battles in the woods which is fun to watch, and all kinds of freaky deaky circus folks show up and juggle and do trapeze acts in trees and all kinds of good shit.  You can also climb the mountain from here (a gentle and peaceful trail hike) and the view from up top is spectacular.  Also an easy place to find some bud if you're looking.  Of all the things to do in Montreal this is what I recommend the most, it's just a really cool unique cultural experience.

2. Night Life: Montreal has tons of bars and clubs all over the city, but the most popular strips are Crescent street (great for pub hopping), and St. Laurent street (also has pubs but is more spread out and has many big dance club type places).  You will find lots of girls on either street.  If you're going to St. Laurent, I recommend a bar called St. Sulpice, it has the biggest patio I've ever seen in a city.  Get there pretty early to ensure you get a table.

3. Restaurants: There are so goddamn many cafes and bistros and restaurants of all kinds in this city that I don't even know where to begin.  You can't really go wrong.  Many of them are of the "Bring your own wine" and/or "Bring your own beer" variety which is fun and easy on the wallet, as there is no "uncorking fee" that one finds in most other provinces/states.  As I said, you can't go wrong, but one of my favourite areas to eat is in the plateau around Prince Arthur street.  Also, Crescent Sushi has a $15 all-you-can-eat deal everyday during lunch, too good.

4. Walk around!  Montreal is a medium-sized city and very pedestrian-friendly, with lots of shops, galleries, boutiques and an unusually high amount sex shops and porno theatres throughout the city!  (Just kidding about visiting the latter, but seriously, you'll notice when you arrive, the sex industry in this city is so bizarelly integrated with major commercial areas, it blows my mind!  Nothing to hide it seems!)  Some of the more popular areas include the Old Port waterfront, downtown (St. Catherine and St. Laurent street), the plateau (Mont Royal Street) and the gay village (Easterly on St. Catherine).  Also, great guitar browsing at Steve's Music or Moog Audio (the latter has Carl's Dusenberg)!

5. Catch a Cirque du Soleil show!  By now I figure most people are familiar with Cirque du Soleil, it's the artsy circus and it's really breathtaking.  Now world-famous, this is where they started.  I'm not sure of specific ticket availabilities but I know they just opened a new show in their tent in the Old Port.  They run multiple shows a day and tickets shouldn't be too hard to come by.

6. Check out the Biodome!  The Biodome is basically an indoor zoo and bird sanctuary and is cool if you're into that sort of thing.  I have personally lost many hours watching the penguins.  There is also a huge botanical garden in the park adjacent to it.  It is located at the old Olympic Stadium.

7. Check out La Ronde!  La Ronde is an amusement park located on St. Helens island in the middle of the St. Lawrence river.  Pretty typical amusement park experience.  You can also find the Casino here.

8. Waterfront Fireworks every Saturday night!

9. Finally, eat a poutine!  No trip through Quebec is complete with some artery-clogging curds'n'gravy.  You can find this pretty much anywhere, but  there's a bit of a landmark poutine shop called La Banquise on Rachel street.  It's open 24/7 and has over 30 poutine options on the menu, definitely worth going out of your way for if you want the authentic experience.

Enjoy your stay!!!  Also, don't be intimidated by the fact that all the names I've just listed are french, english-speaking people can get by just fine here.

I can only assume this show will sell out.  MMJ doesn't seem to quite have as large a following throughout Canada as they do in America, but Metropolis is one of the most popular venues in the city and there should be enough interested parties.
It is sort of similar to what I've seen of T5, though I think a bit smaller, I believe capacity is about 2300.  I've only ever watched shows there from the floor, though up in the balcony looks like an interesting experience, particularly if you get a seat (stool).  It has easily accessible bars from any vantage point which is a huge plus for me.

I don't think I can partake in any pre-show meet-up as I've already to offered to host the local crowd before the show, which includes some of my girlfriend's co-workers and some randoms so I'm sorta occupied.  I can recommend any number of nearby spots though, lots of patios and pubs around the corner on St. Laurent street.

Thanks again, BD!  I'm driving up, solo, from NH and it doesn't look like anyone I already know is going to be there, or at Ottawa, so I figure some preshow for forum peeps is an option.  Otherwise, I'll just have one of those Zen concert-going experiences, like my week-long, 3-show run last April.

Great stuff!  La Banquise is on Rue Rachel near Parc La Fontaine, it's a little out of the way but worth it if you have the time!

Thanks for the info!  I figure Schwartz's and La Banquise will take care of my arrival and departure meals.  Schwartz's is a short walk from hotel/Metropolis; La Banquise a longer walk or short drive.

Getting psyched!

Oh hell yeah, you gotta go to Schwartz's, which was one of my required destinations when I went. Viande fumee! Get the fat, just because.

I make no promises, but I won't have a way to post the forum until I get back to NH on Thursday, so I'm dusting off the ole Twitter account.  Some may recall a few lame tweets from Birmingham, Nashville, and Atlanta last April.

Setlist suprises, mindless drivel, perhaps nothing (as I do hope to be sometimes too busy having fun to pull out the cell).

(can you believe someone else already had "johnnyyac" when I set up the account last year?  wtf!)

We didn't go to Schwartz's since our friends had a big breakfast, but we did go to La Banquise.  It's a great place.  Our friends shared the Poutine Matty (bacon, onions, peppers, and mushrooms) while we had the Taquise (guacamole, sour cream, and tomatoes).  The poutine was very good.

About 36 hours until showtime!

It's a been a long time since I've visited these forums, so long that I couldn't recover my password!

Looking forward to tonight, my first MMJ show since Symphony Hall in Boston 5 years ago. Metropolis is a killer venue.

MY THOUGHTS: This is only the second time I've had the pleasure of seeing this band.  I arrived in halfway through Jake and the Leprechauns who were a solid showing from Sherbrooke, QC.  Lots of fellow countrymen and I would think new fans showing love at the end of their robust set.  Short Break, smoke, more catchy but keep-me-guessing music in house.
Dim Lights.  Without need for introduction these five guys instantly became our hosts for the evening, one by one unfurling their own blend of the good vibrations that we love-- they quickly put the crowd into a frenzy.
Personal highlights for me included hearing Evil Urges again (what a solid tune) ; Honest Man really connected and got EVERYBODY moving, my gosh what a serious anthem of the people; Dondante was as long and strong as I have heard it (Big Jim spot and big Carl Ending) and I Will Sing You Songs was a smooth shot I suppose rarely seen today.  Legit MMJ Hitlist in 2011.  I jumped and stomped and clapped and hollered and shrieked Yip Yip Yip a lot.  Metropolis is a really solid venue... it is with mixed emotions that I acknowledge that Metropolis was maybe a little over half full-- floor only-- great because we were only all among our people, but its too bad so few and far between are on board up here!  Nonetheless  I definitely appreciated the chance to LOVE IT in an intimate setting.
Great show guys, thanks again and godspeed on the Euro trip!

I cannot stress enough that despite the fact that my ears loved hearing this music sound as beautiful, fueling and moving as ever, it was more the general vibe I felt among the event tonight that keeps me coming back.  At one point early in the night, donèt remember where exactly, perhaps at the end of Anytime or so when things started getting really warm: Jim had his back to the audience sorta standing in front of Bo, and he made this motion like a cat cracking his spine and shoulder span just getting ready to loosen up and unleash.

I will not forget this image.  I donèt know if it was deliberate on Jimès part, but for overall effect, that was a money shot.  Figuratively it set up the whole night (for me at least).  Literally, I feel like I cracked 6 or 7 vertebrae just watching the guy afterwards.

I donèt know what else to say other than the fact that MMJ really knows how to bring it across all lands, venues and crowds.  High fives to all I bumped around with in there.

Ièm not sure why me keyboard is trying to be french right now this has never happened before

PS Gideon soaring outro piece mmmm

What an amazing show. Didn't think anything could top Toronto, but this show just may have. Best back-to-back shows ever. I was kicking myself for not bringing out my camera to shoot "The Dark" at the Kool Haus, so I made sure not to make the same mistake when I heard the opening notes to "Honest Man" at Metropolis. Here is a video in all it's raging glory:

That video is freakishly awesome.  Honest Man is such a doozie live.  Nice to see that they are playing it more often of late; I had the pleasure of witnessing it in the flesh last August.  Excellent quality on that video by the way, both audo and visual  ;D

That's an awesome video.

If you're wondering whose the guy fist pumping through most of the song, that would be me.  And sometimes you can see my wife's short arms clapping and waving in the air.

I gave my spot, one back from the rail, to a pro photographer (there was no gap between the rail and stage) for the first 3 songs.  He emailed me a link to his shots.

Awwwwesooome show.  Awesome people.  My mind was completely blown, best show I've seen in my life.  Its hard to pick the headlight of the show because it was seamless all the way through but Dondante was sick.  I'll be back to Montreal soon.  What a great city.  Can't wait to see them at meadowbrook outdoors.  Might even try to sneak in one before that if I can.

MMJ shows are such a drug. I went to the shows in Montreal and Toronto, will also be hitting up the MeadowBrook show, yet I also find myself trying to find a way to get in another show before then.

By the way, if you traveled to this show from Laos and you're reading this -- it was a pleasure rockin' with ya.

Hey Jake and Co. it was great to discover your music, I am curious as to how you ended up booking this gig (as their were no other openers on this leg of the tour)?
I lived in Sherbrooke for 5 years while at Bishop's University and I never even heard of you guys!  Best of luck!!

Would you believe we just asked them!!   When I told you that MMJ were incredibly nice folks that's also what I meant!!  First we contacted Evenko (the show producer), they checked us out and said:"If its ok with the band, its ok with us".  MMJ liked our music and the rest is "JATL" history!

@johnnYYac, thanks for the pics. Really appreciate it!

By the way I can't say enough how you guys were an amazing crowd!! Real music lovers.
