Title: Early 90's music
Post by: Tracy 2112 on Apr 11, 2011, 12:13 PM
I found these videos this weekend and it reminded me how much great music was coming out in the early 90's (Janes Addiction, Dinosaur Jr., Sonic Youth, REM, Screaming Trees, Sugar, RATM, Smashing Pumpkins, Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Soundgarden, Pavement, etc... can't name them all)

The Late Show - No Nirvana - Part 1 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-wiCodu621E#)

The Late Show - No Nirvana - Part 2 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ix2ZRAMvjoE#)

The Late Show - No Nirvana - Part 3 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CqMQIW6KxSc#)

The Late Show - No Nirvana - Part 4 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w5VR7rFdoMs#)

This is what I grew up with. I was never much of a Nirvana fan though. But there are certain songs/bands that epitomize the early 90s sound for me - Dino Jr being the best example.

The following are others that transport me instantly:

Nada Surf - Deeper Well (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bl6tEn90xOE#)
Lemonheads - Rudderless (Live, 2005) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h_GIlZX8yDQ#)

Yo La Tengo - Sugarcube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zDgpQBaziy0#) (even though this came out in '97 I believe)

And speaking of the Foo Fighters (I saw that documentary as well - don't hate 'em, don't love 'em) - I did love the work of their original rhythm section:

Seven - Sunny day real estate (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QMkH6xi6-Og#)

I didn't know how good we had it in the 90's until they were over.
I've been listening to Folk Implosion a lot, overlooked band from mid 90's featuring Lou Barlow of Dinosaur Jr. and Sebadoh.

Seriously how great was that first PUSA album, I should look into their other stuff.

Here's the rundown:

PUSA I = one of the greatest
PUSA II = for a sophomore album, it is exceptional. Highly recommend
volcano (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WNav3URt9_0#)
Freaked Out and Small = meh. It has its songs, they're like cheap gum from the $.25 cent machine. They taste great at first but they lose their flavor pretty fast
jupiter live! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XFdErzVgHlY#)
Love Everybody = Awesome album. They kinda dropped the kitsch for this one and made what I think is a very straight forward album that has no skippable tracks
The Presidents Of The USA - Drool At You (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lA0NEfmXBw0#)
These Are the Good Times People = again, another awesome album, and it sort of is a combination of the kitschy parts of their first two albums with the musical stylings of Love Everybody
Ladybug - The Presidents Of The USA (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hwSOjoHFLn4#ws)
Sharpen Up Those Fangs - TPOTUSA (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gAl2iSDs77k#)

Thanks for the PUSA run down Chode, and Clouds Taste Metallic Lips is an oft-overlooked resource in the Lips world these days. Wishing they would pull some of that out live once in a while. Always wanted to see Lightning Strikes the Postman live.

Polaris, Mark Mulcahey both emniate 90's for me as well.

Great topic!!! To quote Eddie Vedder, "speaking as a child of the 90's", I'd like to first apologize to anybody that I got into a barfight with...unless of course, you kicked my ass and then I'd like to challenge you to a thumbwar or a game of "Words with Friends" to settle the score  ;).  There is soooo much good music, but here are some of my favorites:

I used to listen a lot to  "grunge" music a couple of years ago, although these days I don't listen it much anymore. There's one particular album I always get back to: "Above" from Mad Season. Perfect album from the best "supergroup" (Barrett Martin, Mike McCready, John Baker Saunders, Layne Staley and sometimes Mark Lanegan) of the 90s IMO. Layne Staley has such a powerful voice. One of the best works of McCready also :). Think it's really an underrated album!

This thread has put me on a Sunny Day roll.  I think that since they came at the tail end of the whole Seattle thing they tend to get overlooked.  And I think William kicks ass on drums no matter what Dave Grohl says.

Pretty crazy.  None of those guys look like they would take much grief from anyone, yet they're all there rocking their balls off and being respectful of each other.

I love the Helmet vid when the guys yells, "are you going to play or just look pretty?".  Then they go into what is still one of the greatest riffs of all time.

This is hogwash. The golden age of music? Hip-hop, okay, yes—rock, no. The 90s were good, but the 70s ruled. Rock, hard rock, progressive rock, garage rock, R&B, funk, soul, punk, folk, country, etc.

Saying that about an art form is narrow minded and ignorant. Yes their is a lot of crap rap out there, but you gotta dig a little deeper. That's like saying MMJ is crap because all rock music sucks, if all you ever heard was Nickelback and the other shit they pass off as rock music these days.

Aw shucks, I hear where the guy's comin' from... it took me an eon to get into hip-hop, and I *ONLY DID* because of Bob Marley's son (and my devotional love of Bob). And he has enough crap rap to go around... but his spiritual-themed numbers get me. Then I got into the spiritual Beastie Boys material (once I realized there WAS such a thing, a la MCA & Buddhism)  I very randomly liked Bone Thuggs "Crossroads" when I was 14... go figure, it has spiritual significance in it.... and I used to like to memorize all the fast flyin' lyrics of the Barenaked Ladies, in 7th grade (so, not...um... rap....or...spiritual... but fast as shit lyrics, none-the-less!) I even managed to infiltrate the "popular crowd" for 15 minutes of fame with my abilities to remember AND flow the lyrics to One Week. #shutupimproud  :lipsrsealed: :lipsrsealed:

ANYWAYYY, I get it. Good hip hop is hard to just find... True, your awesome hip hop cd gift is grrrreatt, I really enjoy it!!

That being said, I rarely am ever in the mood to hear hip hop these days, but every once in a blue moon it's fun to dig out.... darkstar, as True truly states, there sure is a hip-hop world out there to explore, but like anything else, it's not everyone's cuppa tea..  (http://www.pic4ever.com/images/coffeebath.gif)

While I don't agree with Darkstarflashes, I understand where he's coming from. I feel lucky to have grown up during the early days of hip/hop. Not everybody feels that way though. It doesn't speak to all people, and I've never thought rap intended to speak to everyone. I enjoy a great vulgar hip/hop song quite often, but it isn't the pinnacle of the genre. I just enjoy hearing it. I also enjoy several mc's who are more lyrical and inventive with their word play. Lately I've really enjoyed Childish Gambino even though he's probably more pop  hip/hop than intellectual. His word play is interesting though and he covers topics that aren't always typical. Plus he's got a guy in his band who is a pretty good violinist. As a matter of fact, his band is one of the things I really enjoy about him. It's much more interesting to see a guy rap with a band backing him than a dj. Even though I've seen some amazing shows where there is only a dj. I think of watching Jay Z at bonnaroo on the main stage. He had that huge crowd in the palm of his hand all night. It was one of the most "religious" shows I've ever seen. To see that many people came to bow down to the alter of Hova was a thing of wonder and awe. There is so much variety in hiphop that it has to be looked at closely to find the good. There is definitely plenty of bad hip/hop out there. For every Mos Def, there's a Gucci Mane. Or to put it in rock terms, for every Wilco there's a 311 out there.

I'll never understand music fans that make blanket statements like rap music or dubstep is crap and isn't music.  To discount different genres can only lessen your credibility in discussing the wide world of music.  You don't have to like it but the way people just shove it aside as substandard crap is beyond me.  It's no different that saying I know good food, I only eat fine dining but not street food or classical French cuisine but not Pan Asian.  Similarly, discountable would be those that argue recycled art isn't art.  Such blanket stances only discredit the speaker in the wider discourse of the subject at hand, whether it be music, food, or art.

The above mentioned genres are rhythm based meant to make you really get down.  Rhythm based music well predated rock n' roll and laid the foundation for it's birth.  Similarly, so many fans that repeat the mantra of rap/hip-hop or electronic music is crap, don't mind that an electronically manipulated six string machine is a prerequisite to 90% of the music that they listen to.  Naah man, that's real music because he's playing it.  Right, drums?  check.  bass?  check.  guitar? check.  keyboard?  optional.  = formula for real music.

Here's a great article about DJ Zedd.  He is an accomplished musician who applies his knowledge to modern technologies to work from a much much wider sonic palette.  I urge haters to read it and shoot, I'm a Skrillex hater.

Now I'm about to post some shit that'll blow everyone's mind.  It's not hip hop.  It's not rock.  It's the best.  90's finest.

I was a teen in the '80s and hated  most '80s music. Through the '80s I listened to rock music from the late '60s and early '70s (okay, also The Smiths and The Cure who I will defend to the death). I thought the worst of '80s music was what passed for "rock": that steaming pile of hairspray, guyliner, spandex, cheesy lyrics and predictable riffs. So I was thrilled when '90s grunge came along. It was like rock came back to life.

The early 90s were all about Blur, and other bands I loved that came from the 80s such as The Wedding Present and The Stone Roses, but that still made some awesome early 90s albums.

Blur - There's No Other Way (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LJzCYSdrHMI#)

God, Blur look young in that one.

The Wedding Present Dalliance Seamonsters (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fzOHGE_dxVo#)

It's worth staying with this until the guitars cut in at about 3 mins.  In fact, that was so good I'm off to listen to Seamonsters for the umpteenth time.

My college roommate my freshman year was all into the big hair bands and it was hell on earth for me?!  But slowly, I convinced him what REAL music was and converted him into a big Pixies fan and suprisingly he became a big fan of Felt as well (he was a guitarist and he really dug all of the classical stylings of Lawrence on many of Felt's instrumental songs).

I was big into these guys as well.

Rusted Root - Cat Turned Blue 6/94 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uS5YkZLkXmY#)

Rusted Root - Food And Creative Love 6/94 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7-rRYxMjT5A#)

They were a 'local' band of sorts.  They were from Pittsburgh and I went to college about an hour north of Pittsburgh at Westminster College.  They played shows at my college as well as several shows at other local colleges like Allegheny and Slippery Rock so we got to see a LOT of small, intimate shows before they became discovered.

The last time I saw them was opening up for Page and Plant in Dallas at the old Reunion Arena and thinking how far they had come from playing in front of maybe 100 Westminster students in our student lounge?!   :cheesy:

Oh and I was in LOVE with Hope Sandoval from Mazzy Star as well...

Or to put it in rock terms, for every Wilco there's a 311 out there.

Watch it, asshole!  Some of the best shows I've seen and best memories are 311 concerts "back in the day".  When they first came out, they were raw and were badass live.  I've still got cigarette burn scars on the tops of my hand from when me and my old buddy John put them out on our hands at Tipitina's in 1994.  We wanted a permanent reminder of that night.  Yes, we were those guys.

In 96, in college, Kevin and I were in soccer preseason doing 3 a days.  Train at 8, gym at noon, and train again at 4.  We drove to Pensacola from south Georgia to watch them at our old music hall immediately after our afternoon practice.  After the show, drove back to school got in around 5ish and had to practice at 8.  I'll never forget that morning cuz my buddy was our keeper and we had an intense shooting drill that morning.  He was miserable...

I don't care for them anymore, but I do get nostalgic from time to time thinking about all of the chaos from that time period in my life.

anyway, what were we talking about in here?

My 311 memories are much more pathetic. My husband who owns five cd's and three cassingles generally gets one of those five cd's and plays it on repeat for around five months -  sometimes seven while he showers in the morning. They are made up of one 311 cd, Megadeth's Psychotron, George Micheal's Freedom, an Elvis Christmas CD, and the soundtrack to O, Brother, Where Art Thou? On cassingle, the only one I know is the theme from Cops - Bad Boys by Inner Circle? maybe. He played that damn 311 cd for two freakin' years.  The man doesn't really love music, but when he does.... So I have my reasons for hating 311. The other ones I can handle on occasion, but never 311 - NEVER! 90's Ska/rap/rock hybrids were not the top of my music love. In fact, I was as relieved by the demise of that subgenre as the demise of female r&b artists who sung like Destiny's Child and Destiny's Child. So many drives home from work without a decent cd player in my car during those years - so much PTSD.

Yes!!!  Ride was awesome, particularly the Nowhere album.  I'm a big fan of that early shoegazer stuff as well.  A big highlight of this year was getting to see Jesus and Mary Chain again after 19 years.

In the early 90's (well, really starting in the late 80's) what blew my head open more than anything else was Jane's Addiction.  In this period they were pretty much the best live band I've ever seen.

Jane's Addiction - Whores (Live in Milan) 10-11-90 [HQ] (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nt8xhUhMzL0#)

Jane's Addiction - Ocean Size (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qeFG8nwrm1E#)

I didn't want to start a new thread, so this one seemed appropriate...

Apparently last night, after the Rock and Roll HOF show at Barclays, "Nirvana" played a show at this bar in Greenpoint. So there was Dave Grohl, Krist Novaselic, and Pat Smear fronted again by St. Vincent, Joan Jett, Kim Gordon, J. Mascis, and John McCauley. I don't know if anyone else took a turn, Im just getting all this info from Instagram (@brooklynvegan), but man what a special show. I can't help thinking what an honor it must have been for McCauley to play with them, with te whole Deervana thing. I'm really hoping for some videos or an article about the show, anything.

"About the Nirvana thing.. It was a real dream playing with that rhythm section and Pat Smear. And thank you to all my people who are proud of me. Love you guys.
People have been saying all sorts of stuff about the Nirvana on the internet today. It's the internet.. It's stupid.

My take on the whole thing, which is something i think a lot of people forget, is that in a situation like this there is no right person for the job. Nobody was trying to fill in for Kurt (not even me, i swear! I just kinda sound like him when i scream); they're impossible shoes to fill. Instead, everyone who performed was there to celebrate the music, friendship, and to have fun. Simple, right? I'll be forever grateful to Dave, Krist and Pat for letting me in on the celebration.

Xo"
