Is it just me, or is the song order alllllllllllll fucked up? I mean COME ON! really guys...you actually thought "Victory Dance" was a good opener? I've studied song orders my whole life, from the perfect song placements of Dr. Dre's "The Chronic" and Dire Straits "Making Movies" to noticeable lack of thought that went into albums like "Songs In The Of Life" and "Marquee Moon". You can trust me, I know where a song is supposed to go and I can tell you that Circuital is a complete and utter failure. First off, half of those songs shouldn't have even been on there. What they should have done is gone back and made their songs sound like they did on At Dawn and It Still Moves...but because they didn't, we'll just have to work with what we have. I said it before and I'll say it again, "Victory Dance" is a HORRIBLE opener. HORRIBLE! The WORST. So bad it almost ruins the whole album. Then right after they almost ruin the whole momentum of the album they perfectly blend the end of V.Dance into Circuital? What are you guys, DJ's??? Let's get back to the Rock and Roll boys! Then right at the end of Circuital, right when you're feeling all bubbly inside, they go into more happy bubbly stuff? HELL NO! I wanna hear that thrash, that rock, that "I don't give a fuck who are, we're not Kings Of Leon" sound. But thats just the start of it all...it's right in the middle is when it gets realllly bad...they centerpiece the whole album with their most rockin', catchy and unique song to date "Black Metal"? really? you wanna centerpiece your album with your BEST song. My Morning Jacket is better than this...I wanna hear their best song right when I don't expect it...like in It Still Moves you're listening it is you're all like "ladi dodi..oh Golden was nice...oh yeah I really like that Master Plan song...then BAM - ONE BIG FUCKING HOLIDAY"...but not on this album. Not on Circuital. They have to go and ruin it with horrible song placement. So right when you're like.."okay, My Morning Jacket ALWAYS finishes strong" they gotta end the whole thing by slowing it all down and making it sound all pretty. I hate when bands force me to reflect and think and come to terms with the creative expression that artist just presented to me. No, yeah, this album is all wrong and I have come to correct it. Here is what I got.
1. "Moving Away" (how ironic..starting with a song about moving away...I thought Jim would have seen this one)
2. "You Wanna Freak Out" (because this is what we want from a second song...we wanna freak out"
3. "H. Black Metal" (This is where we freak out)
4. "Outta My System" (Now that we got it out of our system...let's move forward)
5. "The Day Is Coming" (moving forward into a new Day)
6. "First Light" (Now that the day is here we have our.."first light")
7. "Wonderful" (in our first light..how else do you expect to feel)
8. "Friends Again" (I can't believe they didn't put this song on there. BULL SHIT. I'm sooo pissed, I mean this song would be PERFECT right HERE..right after "wonderful". Jesus...I thought these guys knew what they were doing)
9. "Victory Dance" (Once you're friends again...you gotta have a lil victory dance)
10. "Circuital" (I don't know what it means...but that's why it would be a good closer...like "what does all of this mean???")
11. "Moving Away" (again...thats right - end and start with the same song!- that would be so bad ass!)
LEAVE OUT : "Slow slow tune" - (it's waaaaaaaaay toooooo sloooooooow...come on! let's ROCK IT!!!)
I hope you all can see where I'm coming from...just put the album in this order and you'll hear the album the way it's SUPPOSED to sound. The funny thing is, I probably listen to WAY more My Morning Jacket that Jim James or any of The Boys do, so I should actually know better the best way there music should sound.
I hope next time they make an album they don't fuck up like they did this time...
Do you ever have a problem finding a mirror?...because I am assuming you like to look at yourself and all your righteousness.
So what are you saying? You think MMJ doesn't know what they are doing? Wow...while you're at it, maybe you could work on the Sistine Chapel...you might find that Michelangelo messed up on the order as well.
I guess I find it extremely arrogant for a someone to claim that another's work of art is wrong. You might not like it and would like to make changes, but never suggest that the artist is wrong. Because, through my studding of art & design I have learned that art can't be wrong.
You took a long time to write that post and I praise your commitment, but your order of points is a bit off...next time your studding song orders ask your teacher for some help...I would give you some, but I never have studies song orders.
The cool thing with today's technology...you can put an album in any order you want.
lol......so you think starting and ending the album with the same song would be better? What part of your years of studies led you to that?
You may not like the order, but I'm liking it. Sorry it bothers you so much. Like the post above me says....thankfully you can listen to it in any order you want.
Pretty sure he's using sarcasm.
I definitely sense sarcasm. There is no way anyone would think Victory Dance is a shitty opening song.
Yeah, he's definitely being sarcastic.
But I found it excessive and a little unnecessary as well
You're wrong Casey! >:( Would you put At Dawn in the middle of At Dawn? First Light or whatever should be the opener and Day is Coming the closer so it would make sense on repeat. I'd put both Moving Aways back to back in middle so when you move away from where you moved away to you be right back in the same plaaaace, that you started out.
I'm used to more subtle sarcasm :P

For all the FOOLS who can't pick up on a hint sarcasm, let me just say that I am simply poking fun at everyone who comes onto MY forum and has to find something wrong with this AMAZING album. Last night I got stoned and I wrote what I wrote. Then I watched 'The Tudors' until 4am.

I thought you were being sarcastic, but it's not always easy to tell on a forum when you can't hear a person or see their face. Maybe a little ;) would help next time.
;)
I always thought the first 53 seconds of Dire Straits' Down to the Waterline should be a separate song itself, much like I thought the first 1:39 of At Dawn should be a separate song

what tracy said. it was just an unpleasant read, sarcasm or not.
I definitely sense sarcasm. There is no way anyone would think Victory Dance is a shitty opening song.
i think we can all sense sarcasm, but it becomes a little harder to detect when it is in complete unabridged novel form.
i agree with whoever said it was a badly placed song order?
not sure why mocking that opinion was worth a whole thread :(
I'm thinking about taking a break until the 31st, 1/2 the stuff I've been reading lately has been kind of a buzzkill and all the music prodigies with there reviews are turning this awesome place in outerspace into a Kabuki Theater.
^I agree, in the last week (or since the album was leaked) this place has been a bit unpleasant at times. People of the world....relax!
Can i just say that too many people on here try to be sarcastic. its funny every once in a while yes but when you always use that as a form of comedy its not funny at all. Anyway the sarcasm is getting a bit old
I'm just going to wait for the Pitchfork review until I form my opinion.
Good lord! Shall we all pass out pacifiers? I started the Dark Side of Circuital thread for a reason though half in jest. I recommend that those that would like to critiques the album in a way that the sensitive defenders will get upset about, please write in there where you will meet other like minded souls that won't take your critiques personally.
I haven't had a drink since last Saturday and am shaking. I'm gonna throw some back and listen to some At Dawn tonight, the last good album the Jacket have made.

you should quit drinking...FOREVER! Then start condemning everyone who drinks or thinks about drinking or thinks about not drinking. And become self-righteous and say things like, "I used to drink..." and then get all bitchy at the kids drinking at the shows. Hang out on the rail and bitch about people drinking or talking during Golden. Then bitch about how far away you had to park. Then (inevitably) bitch about why no one seems to want to hang around you.
That's what I did

Without having heard the album, I will hazard a guess Pitchfork will give it somewhere between 4.4 and 5.8. They gave EU a 4.7, and I just think no matter what this album sounds like, Pitchfork will give it a so-so to negative review based on where the band is in its life. I look at Pitchfork for reviews on newer bands as a way to discover them, but stay away from reviews of established bands as I feel the reviewers let things other than the actual music almost pre-determine their review. Just my opinion.

The exact same thing took place when EU leaked.
I bet Pitchfork gives it somewhere between a 5 and a 7. Just hopefully that Ian Cohen dude and his "yacht pop" bullshit won't be writing it this time. I assume they will bump it up from what Evil Urges got just because its clearly better, but that they just don't get the Jacket or allow a record to grow on them. They write a review and move on. Unless its Animal Collective or Arcade Fire, where they just splooge all over their computer. This album is a 7.5 in my opinion. I love it. I really do. If "Freak Out" really turns into a guitar jammer then maybe this is an 8. I am comparing it to other Jacket albums, which isn't fair, but its hard not to. It Still Moves is a 10 and my favorite album of all time. Z is a 9. At Dawn and Tennessee Fire are in the 8-9 range, and I'd say Evil Urges, in my opinion is a 6.5 or so. It has stellar moments but is a bit disjointed for my liking.
But...that said, I can't wait to hear them live this tour. They have such a deep catalog now that they could do 25-30 songs a night and it will just be fantastic. Although, I figure it will be about 20-25 at the most, save maybe Bonnaroo, this tour will be great. This album is great. This band is fucking GREAT.
and speaking of track orders... any guess at a setlist for the tour?
1. victory dance -->
2. circuital
3. OBH
4. off the record
5. wonderful man -->
6. outta my system

I'm trying. I really am. Here's what I do - I practice my humor here on the My Morning Jacket forums before I take my material into the "real world". This may be much of the reason you're experiencing me in such amateur form - I swear in the "real world", I'm quite the life of the party. My humor here on the MMJforum is very similar to the way Animal Collective tests out their new songs on their audiences before recording. I am simply doing the same thing with you fellow forum members. Clearly, writing a mini-novel parodying disgruntled half assed My Morning Jacket fans didn't carry over so well, you can expect not more from me on this topic - not here, not again...Here's what I'll do guys..Next time, before I whip out my unpleasant humor on such aficionado's I'll work on some new stuff in the Coachella forums first. How does that sound?

The day they don't play Gideon, Wordless, or Dondante I'll be shocked
I was duped... And a little freaked out. Considering that I still haven't caved and I'm trying to wait till the 31st... I don't know if I'll make it though. With regards to the setlist... since I haven't caved the only songs I know are Circuital, Black Metal, and Wonderful... But everytime I have listened to it I've thought Black metal would be a good song to open to... With a little extra intro before like they did with OBH on their Spring '10 Tour... I think that would be cool. That is all. Any thoughts?

By the time they go on tour everybody will have know those two songs for MONTHS and once those opening notes hit I can see these pavilions erupting with joy and cheer.

First off...you couldn't pick up on ANY of it being a joke?
Second you ALWAYS have your ipod on shuffle? what happens when you want to listen to Marvin' Gayes "What's Going On" or Radiohead's - "Kid A"? do you still leave it on shuffle...? **please say no, please say no, please say no**
Hahaha no, i play that song but it's still on shuffle :P I just dont know what comes next. And yeah i thought you were serious through ALL of it ;)
But you're supposed to know what song comes next on Kid A...that's the beauty of it. It's an ALBUM...not a playlist.
It can be both, and I don't even have Kid A

;D
I have no idea how I'd reorder it, but I'm in agreement that it feels out of whack as it is.

No...it can't be both. You're wrong. It's like saying getting a slice of pizza and getting a whole pie are the same thing..they just aren't. Same ingredients, same pizza shop, same people making it, yet 2 completely different products.
And what?!?!? you don't own KID A? get the funk out of town! It's seriously one of the greatest pieces of work ever made. It changed the way music was made, was heard and accepted. Do yourself a favor and find yourself of copy of Kid A, put it on (NOT ON SHUFFLE) and listen. Listen very carefully and you will understand why certain albums should not be played in a random order...
God, I feel like I'm talking to a child...

they're going to ring that gong while taking the stage and the magic eye is going to open. Then they will begin the slaying with Victory Dance.
God damnit that sounds amazing. I've also thought that maybe Black Metal might be a good end song... with a little extra solo on top of it.
always gotta have a little extra solo.

See all you noobs later!
WHEW! So people on here do have senses of humor. Seriously., I'm so relieved because 1. This posting made me REALLY sad until I saw it was a stoned fun rant and 2. In the short time I've been here I've made a few boners and hope everyone has a sense of humor and will forgive me.
I believe that for me, the release of this album is going to be nothing short of life altering. There's always been an album released to coinside with every big change or phase of my life. I've just made what is without a doubt the biggest and most important change ever and CIRCUITAL is obviously going to be the soundtrack to it. In fact, I stopped listening to any other band besides MMJ weeks ago(all albums, e.p.s, b-sides and demos) and won't go near the radio. Blech. It's been like cleansing my system. MMJ's music just puts me in such a wonderful space anytime I hear it. It's like musical prozac (with a little viagra thrown in).
