Title: June 24 Oakland Roll Call
Post by: Jackets N Pones on Jun 19, 2011, 10:21 AM
What up everyone. I am new to the forum and have never started a show Roll Call before. I have not seen one for Oakland next Friday, so here it goes...

1. Jackets N Pones

My wife and I are from Houston, and we are going to a wedding in Santa Barbara on that Saturday the 25th. (Still) not knowing if MMJ will grace us with a Houston show, we decided to spend the extra travel money and parlay the Jacket show Friday with the wedding on Saturday. Anyway, the Fox looks amazing, and we are very much looking forward to the show! My biggest question about the venue is when to start lining up in order to get a spot up front (we have GA seats). Also any advice on how to meet the band would be awesome. Thanks!

jackets,  since the event is on a weekday you probably don't need to line up too early.  the venue isn't too far from the OAK airport, so you may just do a drive-by to see if there are people lining up.

LOVE that you're including this show in your westcoast trip!  way to make even more out of a great reason to travel.  :)

don't know anything about where the band buses are in relation to the fox.

see you & the mrs. there!

Honestly you can show up fairly close to show time and still get a nice spot within a dozen yards of the stage... been to plenty of sold-out shows there and I always seem to just walk right down to the lowest pit level even after the opener has finished. But if you're there any time after doors open and before Everest, you'll be set in the first couple rows of people or so.

Woot! I just moved to the Bay Area from NC with my wife. Can't wait to check out the Fox theater and see Jim and the boys shred it on stage once again...it's been too long! This will be show #6 for me since that fateful and magical first meeting at Bonnaroo in '06.

The Fox is an amazing place to see a show, can't wait for this.  Absolutely beautiful inside, the sound is usually fantastic, air vents on the floor everywhere blowing cool fresh air into the theater, easily accessible bars everywhere, and the nicest of people working there.  Every level of the main floor is great except, in my opinion, the very top level near the back of the floor, the ceiling is very low overhead right there and it's just not as nice as the levels below.

Couple of recommendations for pre-show that are near the Fox...

The Trappist has amazing beers on tap, leaning toward Belgian styles, simple food menu, but really tasty  http://www.thetrappist.com/ (http://www.thetrappist.com/)

The Beer Revolution (probably where we'll be) has something like 50 beers on tap, and an insane amount in bottles.  If you're a beer connoisseur this is your place, within walking distance to the Fox.  http://www.beer-revolution.com/ (http://www.beer-revolution.com/)

Cafe Van Kleef is one of my favorite bars downtown, and it's just a few doors down from the Fox http://www.cafevankleef.com/ (http://www.cafevankleef.com/)

see you there!

headliners at the fox typically go on between 9-9:30 and even sold out shows seem slow to fill. I usually skip openers, but am anxious to see Everest--perfect compliment to MMJ.

I've noticed that there isn't much at all in the immediate neighborhood for food. the bar/rest inside the fox is actually good, but crowded. anybody recommend good grub within a short (safe) walking distance?

The band buses are just around the back/northeast corner of the Fox--right off the street/sidewalk, with usually 1-2 security guys at post. I leaned against The Decemberists' bus and yacked with a friend for 10 mins and security paid me no mind.

Best food options are probably near jack London square or the grand lake/lakeshore area. Not too many good spots right near the venue.

Thanks everybody for the tips! We are very excited to "Freak Out" in the Fox with you guys! Can't wait to hear which gems the band will break out for this set list, as Honest Man, The Bear, etc. have made some of the recent set lists. Fingers crossed for War Begun! Anybody else have any tracks they are hoping for (not from the standard set list for this tour)? Yeah!

Thank you for keeping track of the setlist!  They certainly do love their fans in San Francisco/Bay Area!  Just when I thought, okay this has gotta be the last song, they pulled out another one, and then another, and then another....they played for nearly 3 hours!   Everyone was having a blast and Jim was rockin' it hard!

I don't know if they have a gig tonight, but I'm really hoping that M. Ward brings Jimmy out for a song or two tonight at the Greek!!  That would be sweet!  And then there's The High Sierra Music Festival.  Who's going?

I was ridin' the rail in front of Jim's microphone.  I cannot believe what I just saw.  Still processing it.  I think that may have been the best show I've ever seen.  BEST DAMN LIVE BAND on the planet.  I cannot imagine how this will be topped.

They just kept takin' in to a higher level and when you thought they couldn't take it any further - they jumped it up a few more notches.

Wow.

Easily one of the best, if not THE best MMJ show I've ever seen  :o :D
The energy and sound was dialed in quickly. Was about 15 ft from the stage and just surrounded by great people really getting into it.

I hear about the encore, I seriously couldn't believe the show wouldn't end. For a moment I thought, wow, no OBH tonight, no Black Metal... especially when the band left the stage after Touch Me Pt.2....  The Jazz Band fit in very well on every song... sometimes the added horn sections can sound a bit contrived, but they strongly enhanced it all. Felt like I was in a cartoon. Lots of high fives.

See you at High Sierra and Red Rocks!

New fan here, had heard one or two of their first albums but it didn't totally click for me, caught them based on buzz on the Phish message board and definitely a great show.  Took a few songs to really get cooking (felt like a lot of the crowd didn't know the songs that opened the show) but after that was very, very on and kept stepping things up.  The Fox is such a hot room!  Amazing interior, great staff, and always gets a great crowd out.  I thought JJ seemed a little overwhelmed by the massive amount of energy at times based on his monologues.

Will definitely catch this band again the next time they come through town!

A little late to the party, but you can add me to the roll call, too.

I was riding the rail right in front of Jim, too.

Amazing show last night. I didn't think they could put on one that even came close to the Greek Theatre show in Berkeley in the fog in 2008, but that gig and this one are, like, 1A and 1B for me.

What a monster set. I was worried I was gonna miss the BART train if they kept going.

That is one long pee break dude! The best (and really, the only good) part of mid-set urination is the no line factor, meaning you can usually take a great leak and miss only one tune.

It sucks that the best combo for maximum MMJ enjoyment is booze and bud. Wreaks havoc on the ol' bladder. I'm thinking of having some fun guy at my next show just to alleviate the aforementioned, and usually always necessary early-set pee break.

nah fella's you don't get it.  at I'm amazed I realize I have to pee, I don't actually urinate until Golden and than I grab another beer and walk back with an "ahh, that felt good to get it 'outta my system'" type vibe.  making it back in time to go balls to the wall, bladder emptied, rock heaven.

i was holding a major piss on the beach at the hangout music fest and when they started in on "first light" i turned around to steam engine and said "fuck it man i'm pissin down my leg for this song" and proceeded to urinate on myself and pouring water on my legs while rockin' out and drinking a miller tall boy..

it made these lyrics make total sense to me all the sudden

"Been looking back

First I was an ancient
Then I was an infant

Miss Y I hope you are enjoying the Game, gorgeous day here! I am still basking in the beauty of Oakland, Glenview sure is pretty!

Last night was amazing! I was getting down up front behind ms Y, loving every minute of that huge set list. Great special guest M. Ward & Pres Hall ;D

No SF chapter of chorus ladies on BM but the horns, so nice! Loved seeing Little Joe in his Alabama yellow shades  8), banging on that drum with a big smile. They are like family now that is apparent. Love the NOLA love.

PWW going strong and Reggaeed out.

O is the one... I have to believe T5 has helped pull a rotation of songs, such a gift to be hearing them live again. Speaking of T5 great to see old and meet new peeps I never got to meet at T5. Thank you to the gentleman who found out the name of the Allan Tousaint song,  Basic Lady. I have been trying to figure that one out since NY. They played the same rotation of songs pre show that they had at T5, felt very familiar. Someone suggested it was one of the Roadies "get down to mixed tape" Love it!

I've seen three shows this week, all so different and wonderful, really impressed how they are just on and bringing down the house night after night. They are sounding so good. I had amazing video and photo ops and didn't once reach for my iphone... Had to be in the moment and take it all in. I can only imagine how they must be feeling. It looks like they are all having a blast!

Bring on High Sierra and SB bowl. Now I get to step into the great outdoors at two gorgeous venues.  :dankk2:

It will be just like the fourth of July all because...

Awesome show and it was a delight to see all the familiar faces - yvon, walter, liz.

Anyone get a poster?
So nice to see you too Danz! Too bad it was after the show though, would have loved a T5 dance party reunion!  My pre-show dinner ran a little later than planned (well worth it though...). So I missed out on a poster. Oh well...I feel pretty blessed that I got all 5 posters from the T5 run without difficulty.  You can't win 'em all as they say.  I had the best time last night, a little too crowded on the floor for my liking but I defended my little spot near the wall stage left and boogied down! I have to say that I called that "O" as well as M. Ward's appearance. Pretty damn stoked that my sneaking suspicions were correct!

Can't wait to do it again on Tuesday! I know they will bring it to the Edgefield, but in a more mellow style. Crossing my fingers that the rain in the forecast holds off (bring your raincoats kids, just in case)!

I've seen quite a few shows at the Fox, and none of the performers have ever mentioned the two big buddha statues flanking the stage like Jim did last night.  That was cool.

i would never think about doing or associate myself with the type of people who could piss in a cup standing in a room with other people standing nearby.. but the beach sand craziness was a different kind of landscape.. people weren't so right up on top of each other like what a pit would be like at an indoor show.. i was so hammered and i dont know how i pulled it off so efficiently.. i think maybe i was pouring big cups of water on the front of my shorts and on my legs and burying the wet sand with dry sand.. it's literally probably more sanitary than if you snake your way through a sweaty germy crowd of people just to get to a portapotty that's completely trashed with shit all in it

B) FAIL for telling someone else you are going to pee on yourself
C-H) FAIL for posting about peeing on yourself
I) FAIL for somehow equating Jacket lyrics to peeing on yourself

Dude.  You freaking peed on yourself.  There is nothing I consider sanitary about peeing on yourself.  Spin it however you want to, but you won't convince me that it isn't freaking gross to pee on yourself.

And as Tracy said, I don't know what's a bigger fail.  Peeing on yourself or admitting to other people that you unashamedly peed on yourself?!

I always think darkglow is a chick for some reason.  that's why it was so disgusting to me.  a dude peeing his pants is less sick I guess.  when I picture a chick pissing I imagine it being as nasty as when a cat pisses or something.  just a spray type burst of really smelling urine.  my bad.

What up coldengrey12?! Based on your comments I am pretty sure my wife and I were right next to you! So great meeting you, glad you caught the BART back, and hopefully we will meet again at the rail for another MMJ show down the road!
____________

Thanks to everybody for the tips on the Fox and Bay Area, especially Waltfredo for the heads up on Jack London Square. We had a glorious trip to the West Coast, and our show poster made it back all the way to Houston (big thanks to the Fox for the "poster" check). First time to witness Steam Engine live, and Dancefloors with PHJB blew us away. Totally forgot about Highly Suspicious that late in the set so it was a nice surprise. Pun. Anyway, I thought Jim's shadow boxing, karate kid crane kicks, and the standard Wordless Chorus antics were some definite highlights. Thank you California, thank you Fox Theater, and thank you MMJ. My wife recently posted a brief documentation of our weekend so I thought you might like it! http://emilyeblog.wordpress.com/2011/06/27/ca/ (http://emilyeblog.wordpress.com/2011/06/27/ca/)
