side note - if you know anybody that has 2 saturday passes for ACL holler at me!!!
Oo OooO! It's September 18!!
Do you hear that?? It's the sounds my brain is making while my gears shift around trying to figure out how to make this work....... It's only 20 hours from here, which, to me, is currently translating as only two days of 10 hour driving...... (then, well, back again......... :-X) I'm seeing Arkansas in the middle, so now I'm seeing one day of 10 hours, stopping in Arkansas and camping/hiking a day, then one more 10 hour day to follow.
The rational side of my brain is guffawing at me, as the funds are already in the negatives. But the other rational side of my brain says "Bitch when does this happen again." (hence....... why my funds are in the negatives..... small sacrifices.....)
THUS I POST AN OFFERING!!
Anybody who wants to see this, we could meet in Asheville, and you have a place to stay at my apartment, and we could set off from here and make our way to this heavenly event. I would only ask that we split the gas costs along the way, but we could take my vehicle, and I have no issue with being a full-time driver.
And maybe there's a forum folk on here who lives somewhere between NC and TX who would like to hop on board and has a place for a band of gypsies to sleep at night???
The wheels are turning, turning! If anybody's interested, do let me know!! :D :D
ACL is sold out, btw peeps trying to go to
I have come to accept that living in San Diego I will never get shows like this. But it ain't easy.

I know if I look at the schedule and see what's going on at ACL I'll want to catch all that too....... but really I'd be good with just this aftershow!! :-*
Too bad this is at the same time as the Arcade Fire.
Oh boy do I want to go to this. Unfortunately it's a week after a 10-day vacation, during which I'll be catching Iron & Wine in Seattle. So I'll be cash-less and time-off-from-work-less

The Good News is that they occasionally show these ACL Aftershows on PBS!
The Bad News is that they only show a few songs. Thirty minutes up to an hour.

Didn't realize the curfew was so early at Stubb's on Sundays. I know I've done ACL headliner >>> Stubb's aftershow before without missing much of either.
I would expect Jim to hit the stage at 8 to 8:30 since doors are at 7pm for this show. Really wish this show was Friday night.
i was wondering about that.... who would the headliner be?

Ahhhh......Iron and Wine of course...what are you crazy? You have obviously have never seen Iron and Wine live.
Anyone gonna hit up the Phosphorescent late night show? if you're a fan of Jim James...then you would LOVE LOVE LOVE Matthew Houck aka Phosphorescent. They're one of the best bands in Rock & Roll - backed by some of the hippest lyrics I've ever heard. "Here's To Taking It Easy" was album of the year for me...please someone tell me they're going to their late night show!!!
And Stubb's indoors is teeny. That one will be great.
I think I convinced my younger sister that lives in Austin to go.
She missed out on ACL tickets for the first time in years.
This might just make up for it for her.

Maybe I was wrong twice in the same thread. :-\
Still a can't miss show. (Within a 6 Hour Driving Radius)

I don't think that is the way it will go done at all. I just saw Iron & Wine on Friday and Sam mentioned how he would be back in September with a full band. So I would expect it to just be Jim Solo and then Iron & Wine with a full band. Maybe Jim will come out for 1 song but I wouldn't expect a lot of collaboration.
I know it's a longshot but what would be the likelihood this might get taped?
From Stubb's Website:
Ultimately, the camera and recording policy are up to the discretion of the artist performing that evening, but in most cases the house policy represents an industry standard. Stubb's standard house policy does not allow professional cameras, audio or video recording devices, or cameras with detachable lenses unless the artist performing that evening has approved proper press credentials. Point and shoot cameras that fit in a front shirt pocket are acceptable as long as they do not have a detachable lens.

Anybody want to take a shot at this set list?
Don't be surprised if Preservation is the "full band" Sam referred to.
Argh! Saw Sam in a coffeeshop in Seattle on Saturday and totally forgot to ask him anything at all about this show!
I thought this was last night and was wondering why no one was talking about it.... now it makes sense. interested to see how this night unfolds
At the show, starts in 20. The venue is reaching capacity and based on some conversations it seems that the majority of the crowd is here for yim rarer than iron and wine. More updates coming.

Alright folks we need DETAILS here, and we need them bad. *business face*
What on god's green earth is transpiring right now, or transpired already! What is happening folks!
:o :o :o
I saw a picture on Twitter showing what appeared to be members of the PHJB with Jim, who was wielding an electric. Take that for what it's worth. Sure wish I coulda been there.
That's hysterical. I was just about to post something along the same lines but you beat me to the punch, Woodynymph! Yes, please - DETAILS. Can't wait to hear about it. :D
Ok my spirit is leaving my body, and it will only return when intel has been posted!!!
That is interesting to hear that the Preservation Hall crew is in on things, but what of SAM!!! What what what what what are he and Jim doing on that stage.
::::::disappears into the abyss until further postings are made::::::
PS,
BRITTNEY!! I see you online!!! :o :o :o

And I know this is the Jacket message board, but I beg of you who attended this, in honor of the rareness of Jim playing with them,
how was Iron & Wine involved?? Did they do any I&W songs, what did Sam & Jim say to one another..... what were they wearing............are there.....pictures......videos........tweets, twits, spotifys, flickrs, skypes??? *claws at screen*

Can't wait to hear Crispy's account too!! :D
I reeeally need to head to bed, early wake-up tomorrow & a loooong day from there... I'm about ready to post my cell # on here and encourage any and all other updates on this show hahah
But I guess I'll refrain.. will try to hop on in the morning if my wireless isn't all funked up. Iron & Wine was my favorite "newer" act before I found my Jacket, so this was a dream show for me to sit out on.... so my information desperation overtakes me.... thank you a million times for the updates, Brittney!! I wasn't going to sleep until I heard a word about it! :)
No sweat, Woodnymph! Wow, this show was custom-made for you :( I'm hoping there are reviews/photos galore on the web tomorrow to feast your eyes on.
I'm super-new to I & W & lack background to fully process the show but will say I was blown away by how his songs were transformed from the sparse, slow tunes heard on record to these lively-dare I say danceable- numbers they were tonight. And I never realized until tonight how much I & W sings about boning :embarassed:
G'night!
i was a bit out of it during the show, but i seem to recall "Gideon" being played as well.
But I can't swear on it.
personally, i thought the bass was a bit distracting on some tunes.
wish he had played guitar instead.
LOVED LOVED LOVED 'right place', 'golden' and 'bermuda highway'. "Wonderful Man" was pretty awesome stripped down and slower too.
my buzz had worn out by the time Iron and Wine played, and the crowd got too much for me, so i had to move to the very back. The Lionel cover was fantastic.
Will and Jim's voice's sounded pretty damn great together.
Jim and Sam Beam's voices together was pretty out of this world.
great show...not at all what i was expecting.
still need a theater show with jim, sam and 2 guitars.
lionel cover was tits.

Setlist looks right from what I remember. I seem to remember him saying "change" a lot in the first song. "Change your clothes, change your makeup."???
Also, Will only did backing vocals. No guitar was ever played on stage.

Okay help me, I have not been able to watch the video but what was the run down of what Jim did with Iron and Wine. I originally listed Lionel Ritchie's Stuck On You. Did he guest on that as well as Someday the Waves and Wonderful Tonight? In what order. Sorry to nitpick.

He only came out during the last third of the medley, for Stuck On You.... when I first played the video, it started out with Someday the Waves, and I got really amped thinking Jim was on the whole bit.... but he only emerged (to a great applause) as Wonderful Tonight merged into Stuck On You. It went Someday the Waves (Sam) > Wonderful Tonight (Sam) > Jim appearance / Stuck On You (Sam & Jim)...... effing MIND BLOWING harmonies... god to have been around for THAT soundcheck........

As Jim sang, "mighty glad you stayed."
Apologies to woody now for my poor accounting, especially on the I&W angle. I was encumbered for this show by some serious slackers with terrible priorities, like EATING, wtf. Anywho, after a few of the most delicious ribs I'd ever laid a lip over (spotting Tommy also wolfing some down in the bar area), we finally got into the place and took the cave down to get as close as we could, which was still pathetic and too far to the left.
I enjoyed the hell out of Jim's set. The initial tune was sort of a free-form jamming thing with the PHJB guys and Will adding some great backing vocals, and Jim laying it down with that Rickenbacker bass -- that was awesome. Tonight I Want to Celebrate with You was a perfect choice, just beautiful. It was cool to hear the rest of the tunes with that crazy distorted bass and altered arrangements, and I absolutely loved the different take on Bermuda Highway. Jim was emoting HARD on all of his vocals, but especially on Right Place. And Wonderful! Wonderful stuff. I loved watching Will pretty much just standing there watching Jim freak out on the bass.
I wish I could say more about Iron & Wine apart from that I fucking LOVED them, they are really a super band, not just those people playing behind Sam Beam. I heard a few people complaining about the style and length and a lack of the man-and-guitar songs that they knew. My only complaint would have been with the too-cool-to-move statues on the rail who could not be troubled to appear as if they were enjoying themselves. Glad Man Singing had the whole crowd getting down, but not the statue dudes.
We all figured Jim would make his way to the stage again, but for how much and in what form? The duet with Sam was perfect, just perfect. And I think I saw a statue crack a smile.
We REALLY need a recording of this.

It was very much like that, but no percussion -- that was the one with Patrick, right? Are there any other instances of Jim doing sets on his own with the Rickenbacker?

I can see how that bass would have gotten annoying.

man, Jim is really off on a tangent there. Fascinating to watch on youtube, but I sure hope a solo show I ever go to isn't full of that.
The taste on your tongue for the spice, it's like the taste in your bones for the bass!

Nice play by play Crispy! That sounded awesome. Stubbs is such a great venue but jam packed. I see many a statues at shows and am perplexed why they want to be up front? If you ain't rockin out or at least smiling ear to ear why stand ground so close? Sincerely curious as to what they are feeling? Perhaps inside smiles and boogie downs in their minds? Could be :-\

ha!
glad to share.
and MOST glad that i didn't leave the show early.
after Jim's said I was tempted to go next door where there was a benefit going on, and Jimmie Dale Gilmore and Will Johnson were playing.
THANK GOODNESS i stuck around.
Jim ended up playing a song with Will at that benefit right after the I&W show. Friend who was there texted me and I headed over there from Stubb's but didn't make it in time. Just found this video on Youtube of it. I think that's the only song Jim was up there for.

I've watched a couple of these videos. Not exactly like what happened at Headliners for Ear X Travaganza.
I can agree with some other comments that this is bizarre, and too much, but at ear x trazaganza it was awesome and one of the best nights of my life and only a 9 song set...

A Crappy Youtube video captures something amazingly beautiful. Thank You!!! "bonus sandwich" hahahaha. "bonus sandwich". Anyway that is mind-blowing beautiful and whoever has the presence of mind to capture that and post it has my full appreciation and love.
some of the songs were cool to hear in a new way but some had a bit of the beauty taken out of them. If i wasn't a huge JJ/MMJ fan and just thought he was the opener for I&W I would have been confused...

I think I might be the guy whose head bobs in and out! Either way I was right next to your friend.
Wow, I thought that Smokin from shootin was fucking awesome. I've seen it the other two ways a million times. Sounded great to me. The half speed main chorus was sweet. Go drink for awhile and come back and try again. :) Awesome video too. Wish I had the Beats 4U with that quality.
Someone just posted this up on the I&W board :D A better quality vieeewwww

I kind of agree. I wouldn't say disappointing. I think it's cool that he's changing it up and having fun with it. At the same time, if I only got to see him/them one of two times a year, that would not be what I would want to see.
I'm telling you guys Jim on bass with Patrick playing OBH along with other favorites at club with 500 people was one of my favorite shows ever. It was soooo rocking. Peep the video I posted earlier in this thread.
This show doesn't seem impressive, but ear-x-travaganza was amazing. Probably the most special show I will ever see by these dudes.
WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY?????????????? :(
I was going to fly out to Austin just for this show. It's like a bad joke!
