What do you guys think the best setlist of the summer tour was? I'm talking strictly on paper - this is not a discussion about the best show of the tour so, divorce yourselves from the fact that you may have attended a show on this tour and look at them setlists with fresh, critical eyes.
So, which one stood out as "the best" or the most unique, in your opinion(s)?
There are no wrong answers.

other than the palace, of the shows i saw at least (hangout, lexington, louisville, indy, cinci) cinci was by far the best show. phenomenal set list, phenomenal energy, every song seemed to be played different, stop dragging, FULL laylow, cobra, best steam engine ever, and anytime with an extended middle jam.

I think most peeps are generally biased to shows they saw. That said, Oakland by a mile for me. O is the One was the single song I wanted to hear the most and I got it, totally shocked. But generally speaking, I really like the MI show with Lowdown and War Begun and I think the Pittsburgh setlist was good as well.
Michigan show was good setlist, if PWW wouldn't have gotten cut, I would say it was the best (still other than Red Rocks).
shit, if we were talking about all of 2011, i think Lexington would be up there too:
1. Mahgeetah
2. Anytime
3. Off The Record
4. Evil Urges
5. I'm Amazed
6. The Way That He Sings
7. Gideon

I have no doubt red rocks was mind blowing, MMJ in arguable the most amazing outdoor venue in the country...pure bliss and I wish dearly I could have made it. That said, other than Strangulation the setlist at RR doesn't blow my mind. I'm sure they destroyed it, haven't listened to it and am going purely on reading the setlist...which obviously doesn't do much to capture the real intensity of the show itself. Not trying to discredit the awesomeness of red rocks, but setlist wise, not even in the top 5 for me.
I was not at Louisville but it looked pretty solid. I might be biased since I was at alpharetta but I really wanted Cobra this summer and got it. Also got a sick dondante and sweet improv intro into off the record I have never heard.
1. Louisville 5/31
2. Alpharetta 8/20
3. Red Rocks (strangulation!)

I'd concur. Strictly speaking of set-lists and taking everything else out, Red Rocks wasn't much better than what they played in C'bus. After all, we got Strangulation in C'bus as well.
I would say that Oakland set looked pretty amazing as did the Philly setlist. The Palace was pretty epic and I agree with ewind that if Phone hadn't gotten scratched, Detroit may have taken it but it was still pretty strong even without Phone. I'd give Pittsburgh some props and Indy was a nice one too!
Shit, they were all pretty damn good though! 8)
red rocks was the best show i've ever seen, HOWEVER going just off set list it did do it for me.
The Bear into Steam (awesome rare song into my fave song ever)
Steam and Dondante (somewhat rare for this tour)
Honest Man, Strangulation, The Bear (3 rarities)
Strangulation -- this song is BY FAR the song I wanted to see played the most this tour... it got played twice. that automatically made those two shows the shows i had to choose between. imo Red Rocks was a better setlist than columbus.
all in all thats why i had to go with red rocks. on paper, its as sweet as it was live. i didn't go to oakland and that was another one of my tops on paper
I think it may be Columbus:
1. Victory Dance
2. Circuital
3. Off The Record
4. I'm Amazed
5. Gideon
6. Anytime
7. Outta My System
8. Golden

18. Wordless Chorus
19. The Day Is Coming
20. Holdin On To Black Metal
21. One Big Holiday
Anytime, Strangulation, and Just One Thing (biased because it's a personal favorite)
Or (I know it's a wildcard based on circumstances the Kahbang Set that none of us will ever hear) :(
1. Tonite I Want To Celebrate With You
2. Circuital
3. I'm Amazed
4. Gideon
5. It Beats 4 U
6. Wonderful (The Way I Feel)

What's sad is that most of the best set-lists they played this summer have no recording available... :(
Oakland, Red Rocks, Columbus, Detroit, Philly, Kahbang. None of them can be re-lived through a recording unless MMJ decides to start releasing SBD's for sale.
BTW, there is a thread for an online petition in the Show Tapings sub-board above to show MMJ that there is an interest in fans wanting to purchase SBD recordings in case anyone wants to sign it.

Steam and DoDonndante (somewhat rare for this tour)
Honest Man, Strangulation, The Bear (3 rarities)
This sounds amazing.
So I need to pick two - Red Rocks and Oakland.
Oakland had PWW, Steam, Dondante, O is the one, Dancefloors, Anytime - M Ward and PHJB!!
Philly though....Cobra, Lay Low, PWW, Stop Draggin... I think I need to pick three.
Red Rocks
Philly
Kahbang
Red Rocks is definately #1 to me for a few reasons:
1. never heard the bear live--announced before the show to ky, ericm and ynwa that this was really the only song I would want to hear and what better place to hear it
2. the bear right into steam....HOLY FUCKING SHIT
3. starting Dondante in the MIDDLE with a funky jam and then going into the beginning of song
4. STRANGULATION...another one that I've never heard live... blew.my.mind
5. Honest Man
I have some serious post-RedRocks/JacketFestWest blues :'(

How was moving away into PWW cause i heard a few people mention that those songs should be played back to back as they thought they go together well, both slower MMJ songs and i like both of them. I believe that was what a few other people had mentioned in some other thread that they would have liked to have heard these songs played back to back and it looks as though they did in indy. Curious to know anyones input to these songs being played back to back, how was it if you saw the show live or is there a recording of these songs? Looks as though that they went right from Movin Away into Phone Went West judging on the > symbol that is, wondering how the transition was and also how these songs sounded back to back?
Have to view all of the set lists before i can make an opinion as to which set list or lists looked the best on paper. Will post my opinion after i do that. Anyone going to make it overseas to see MMJ?

It's tough to top that list! Kahbang was probably one of the most most unique set lists of the tour. The acoustic aspect made it a memorable show for sure, but it was a short set with no encore, so even though I'm glad I caught the show in my opinion the kahbang set list can't compete with RR, Oakland or Philly.

Sweet,
The link in my post above is to the Internet Archive recording of this show so if you want to listen to the show, follow the link.
Cheers.
Of course everyone is going to pick the shows they went to! Ha.
So best setlist of the shows I saw:
1) Red Rocks. You can't argue with this one. It had all the big tunes and that Bear>Steam Engine is a force to be reckoned with. The songs flowed so well into each other. Seamless show. Perfection.
And my favorite setlist of the shows I didn't get to (meaning, when I saw it posted I made a little noise in my throat at how sweet it looked):
1) Meadow Brook! Anytime? Lay Low? Lowdown? Touch Me Parts 1 & 2? War Begun. C'mon...
I'd go with Red Rocks for the Song Selection (the Bear) and Oakland for the guest appearances, and more specifically O is the One, good god is that song grand live. Okonokos version is mind blowing. Michigan looked great, very similiar to the show i went to in Milwaukee, except War Begun, oh so good of a song as well. Chicago was also pretty great one as well. The Auditorium, not Lolla. Very similiar to the one I saw except they got Honest Man, Anytime, and probably my personal favorite rare song cameo, Where to Begin-> Ruckus FtW
In the end, there is no way of running away from my biased of being mind-blown front row, no gate, elbows on the stage, and under an influence or two w/ Yim Shredding the solos, sweatin right over my noggin' front and center... oh me oh my
That said, put yourself in my shoes with some of these short but sweet HD clips and the Milwaukee show is right up there with any show this summer. Not to mention the key factor in them coming off two weeks where they played a super mild festi-circuit and had a full week in between Bonnaroo and here, so the energy was literally off the charts. Steam Engine, Dondante, and OBH literally seemed to never end until the train came to a screeching, earth's axis-altering kaBOOM*

^^ this does not include the fact that during the opener with DMM-> Tom played bass the whole time. Carl came out for the 2nd song and stayed on the Pedal Steel. Bo came out as well, then last but not least i believe Yim came out on the third song I think, and played Banjitar and sang harmony, followed by Patrick who walks out barefoot as always and rips up this dinky 3 piece drum set that was already out there. Sooooo grand. Please someone vouch for how surprising and soothing their presence was BEFORE the actual concert even started.

http://www.archive.org/details/mmj2000-07-07.aud.flac16 (http://www.archive.org/details/mmj2000-07-07.aud.flac16)
-Started with 3 Circuital Tracks.
-Set off the excitement with 4 of their best known tracks.
-Literally infiltrated my brain with 'Heartbreakin Man' (those drums and hums with the sound they have these days, was just phenomenal.
-Wonderful should be heard be everyone live. The audience choir on the chorus was a spiritual experience if there ever was one. Just before, Yim was rambling on about how The Riverside Theatre reminded him of the last scene at the end of the world in 2001 a Space Odyssey. And anyone who saw UNSTAGED knows what DMM adds to the mix.
-Two more Circuital Tracks
-BOOOOOOM -> FULL LAY LOW IN OUR FACES for 7 mind-melting minutes
HD Solo Videos
http://youtu.be/FxPdPCIJgxc (http://youtu.be/FxPdPCIJgxc)
http://youtu.be/uafrKzjcgyQ (http://youtu.be/uafrKzjcgyQ)
-^^ so mind melting in-fact that everyone ran off stage, leaving Jim and Carl to mixdown a soulful rendition of 'Old September Blues'
The ending of the first set was one blurr of godliness
*Slow Slow is sooooo goood live. That piercing solo and stop they do in that song spikes your senses so intimately, I don't know even know how to describe it.
*Literally a locomotive by the name "Soooooooooooo" came crashing out of tunnel Slow Slow ended in... Steam Engine was sooo packed full of emotion and improv- unlike anything i had ever heard.
->Brought us back to earth with 'Moving Away' and then right up off our feet again with the 9th Circuital track of the night, 'You Wanna Freak'
WHAT A WONDERFUL SURPRISE IT WAS! I didn't know so much guitar riffage could be packed into a barely 3 minute song, but lord almighty was I mistaken.
HOLDING ON TO BLACK METAL-> All of Circuital displayed and caressed like loyal lover
*8 Minutes of MAHGETAAAAAAHHH MADDNESS. They kept running through it and I felt like they stopped the song completely a good 3 times before they kept going until they left the stage completely. I legitimately was convinced the show was over because I wasn't sure could be anymore energy left in the building, but the power of the collective unconscious prevailed and we were blessed with them opening up with Patrick shaking the special stick that signals Dondante's arrival in the atmosphere.
http://youtu.be/RMMJoOYLKCU (http://youtu.be/RMMJoOYLKCU)
Did I mention this song never ended? It still plays in my head to this day.
Did I mention there were an excess lights of sensational screens? Holy Shit those things violated my personal space on more than one occasion and Dondante was a prime example.
Then the now predictable but ever-enjoyable Smokin' Medley which I could listen to on repeat and be none the wiser of unsatisfaction.
Twas One Big Holiday indeed. I have a bunch of pics and video from that occasion that I am not quite certain how to embed on here. I'll upload some stuff to the tube of you's and link it.

Red Rocks Critical Breakdown:
cons of red rocks:
-at red rocks you have the predictable 5 song intro VD->Circuital->Off The Record->I'm Amazed->Gideon. that's 5 straight songs of not sweeter than meadow brook and it's only just begun.
-and you got stink bombed with Outta My System & Golden.
-red rocks only got a 4 song encore, tho they received 24songs instead of 23.
pros:
-The Bear, Steam Engine, Honest Man, Strangulation
-It was at red rocks
Meadow Brook Critical Breakdown:
cons:
-They scratched Phone Went West off because of time constraints
pros:
-I was there.
-VD->Circuital->You Wanna Freak Out = great way to start a show.
-we did not get Outta of My System OR Golden at this show. talk about rare
-Lowdown, Wonderful (Acapella), Lay Low->Jam->Dondante, War Begun Closer, Touch pt 1 after pt 2. Stop Draggin My Heart Around debut w/neko.
-5 song encore.
it's a tough one, you be the judge fans:
My Morning Jacket. "War Begun" - Detroit, MI 8/16/11 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-hT4gICi6iU#ws)
but for the record, my show was better than yours
1. Outta My System was killer at some shows this tour, and Golden > Wonderful.
2. YWFO was somewhat normal for a 3rd song this tour.
3. Strangulation > War Begun
4. Steam Engine > No Steam Engine.
5. Mahgeetah > No Mahgeetah
sorry :(

3. Strangulation > War Begun
4. Steam Engine > No Steam Engine.
sorry :(
strangulation makes me want to cut myself.

1. Outta My System was killer at some shows this tour, and Golden > Wonderful. 2. YWFO was somewhat normal for a 3rd song this tour.
3. Strangulation > War Begun
4. Steam Engine > No Steam Engine.
5. Mahgeetah > No Mahgeetah
sorry :(
Not an acapella Wonderful where Jim shrugs off the roadie trying to give him his guitar! 8)
Also, you forgot this on your list of what was greater than that:
Lowdown (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cyA7Q2rh7TU#ws)
Pretty epic version of that tune if you ask me...
so I took a peekie at this Red Rocks vs Meadow Brook since I wasn't at either.
16 songs were similar - crossing those out leaves 8 unique at RR vs 7 at MB.
I have to say, for ME, I'd give the nod to Red Rocks. Steam Engine, Honest Man, Strangulation are a threesome of big, long classics vs just War Begun. Love me The Bear any time it shows up. And no Mahgeetah, while that's no rarity, seems.... wrong. I just sat through a no magheetah show in Philly (which, by the way, had it been played, would have put that setlist in competition)
Both shows look great on paper, so not bashing on MB. Would have taken that over Boston in a minute!

thank god you were there matt. I'm leaning towards meadow brook as the better set on paper still, fuck these red rock chumps.

see this is where I really disagree. Mahgeetah has become a staple. I've seen it almost every show I've been to. Steam Engine is another one that's really not all that rare this tour. I'm glad it's being played but not really too bummed I didn't get it at meadow brook show.
lowdown, war begun, and lay low->dondante is what this shit's all about. I'm trying to tell you nay sayers the lay low->dondante was nutty. they've been killing dondante this tour tho, but that lay low was DIFFERENT. it wasn't a normal interchange at all. the jam could have been "Self-Hypnosis" series worthy almost. maybe I was just wasted but it was a jam of jams. it was it's own thing. a pure improv jam sandwiched between two of their best songs is worth bonus points. the Wonderful blows red rocks wonderful away, no way around that. instead of a 4 minute strangulation we got a 7minute war begun. instead of a standard honest man we got a jammed out lowdown. the only thing I'm jealous about is the bear. if we had the bear or pww this thread would be over already.
I thought we were talking on paper? If we aren't talking on paper we can only argue what we saw not what we didn't experience. It's an conversation that can never end because no one was at either.
Strangulation is an 8 minute song also...
Sorry Sticky but you lose all credibility with me on this when you say, " a standard Honest Man". :o No such thing, imo!

Oakland wins.
a solid choice. although it does have a slightly "meh" 5 song run.
6. I'm Amazed
7. Golden
8. Outta My System
9. You Wanna Freak Out
10. First Light
the rest of the show is the balls. but that little run, wtf?
My vote goes to the only show I was at.....MOUNTAIN JAM
No, but in all honesty it has to go to Red Rocks, with MI being a runner-up. 2nd best aint too bad Sticky

Well, I'd say there are two meh songs in that run, and they're not even consecutive. Otherwise, looks like a good time to me.
23. Holdin On To Black Metal
24. Highly Suspicious
25. Dancefloors
26. One Big Holiday
^ As as 2ND encore with the PHJB = winner. Oh, that and M. Ward guesting on Wonderful. And O Is the One. Winner. Winner.
(I'm kind of just being a bastard here, even though I think the Oakland show definitely is one of the best of the year.)
me too bbill, hope nobodies taking me too seriously. all the sets are fun. and murph, it's close but at meadow brook I totally blew weed smoke right into jims face and he looked at me. his eyes looked dilated, kinda made him look like a big, wide-eyed, hamster. bottom line is we rocked harder than any other crowd this tour.

Me too. I think this is all good fun and when it all comes down to it, we were all winners because MMJ absolutely brings it each and every night!

of course- I'm just debating for the fun of it too - need something to pass these slow MMJ days. I do think there's a difference between "best set" and "most rare set", and it sounds like SIGS, you are using them interchangeably?

My Morning Jacket only converts to "Ultimate".
I was at both Oakland and RR. They both blew my mind in different ways. Fantastic kick downs both nights. No way I could choose, so they tie in my experience.
I do hear that the Pageant show was incredible

Mountain Jam
Bonnaroo
Mann Center Philly

Strangulation (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zs4mbE12RbQ#)
6minutes 22seconds. did they jam on it longer or are you including segue noise or what? I haven't listened to red rocks nor will I ever. I'm boycotting it. even tho I'm sure it's nice, fuck red rocks.
This One gets my vote!  :coffee: ;D

This will help chose my favorite cause i caught Phone Went West twice and Cobra once and i believe i got low down but not too sure, pretty sure i caught evil urges also. Got highly suspicous twice also but that not too rare this tour. Phone twice in the two shows i saw was a treat then for me. Forgot that i got I will sing you songs also which was only played 3 times. Have to check back, until then. ;D

Kahbang was one. Maybe the only show this tour without a VD opener & OBH closer?
Which two shows got The Dark? Because the best setlist was one of those.
Forgot to add OBH to Philly Show, my bad!

I am sure i am biased. But i still think its Philly

They closed with Magheetah at Mountain Jam too, but that doesn't get my vote for best show...
Still Red Rocks!

i'll take Magheetah over OBH any day/any show!!! i'll even seal it with a kiss :-*
I was at the Kahbang show, the set was unreal... I hope a recording (preferably a SBD!) makes it out someday because that show needs to be heard to be believed.
Jim + Carl doing I Will Be There When You Die, full band acoustic Dondante (absolutely stunning, easily the highlight of the show, i couldn't believe it), full band acoustic IB4U and Smokin' > Touch Me Pt 2, not to mention everything else, I'm still in awe about the show.
I just hope they come back to Maine very soon so I can finally see a nice electric show.

LA closed with Magheetah. OBH was last song before the encore.
