The Kiss is such a badass album opener. I love the psychedelic feel to this album, its way more prominant than say, The Top, which most people consider their "psychedelic" album. That album is just weird (however great).

YES!!!  Get ready for liftoff!!!!

The Kiss is the way I like my Cure.  The band lays down the intro by creating this spacey sonic atmospheric dreamscape and then Robert's voice cuts in and you immediately know he's the god of this realm that the music has created.  Spark em if you got em!!!

Yes, The Kiss is a great opener.  Never saw them live, but I imagine this would kick some ass as an opening song live...

This is the ultimate Cure lineup.  Each member both takes turns being mind-blowing stars and being them together....creating a milky way of minblowingness.

What is the guitar tones that they and other 80's bands use to make them sound, well, 80's I guess? it sounds clean but it also sounds like there is some mighty reverb involved.

If all Cure was as badass as The Kiss, I'd be a huge fan.  One thing I get from listening to this album for the 1st time is how ahead of the time they were.  All the 2000's indie rock that I despised owe so much to this and can't hold shit to it.

Interesting that you pick this album then.  I always thought of Paris as being more Faith, Pornography, 17 seconds.  Which is sort of a diffrent Cure, than Wish, Kiss Me, Head on the Door.

Except Lol, who really didnt do anything but get wasted by this point. This was his last album. He is credited on Disintegration, but actually he didn't to anything on it. He barely did on this.

Well, I'm really fascinated by the keyboard duties on this and disintegration.  I actually think they are REALLY amazing.  I was listening to this today thinking, "man this has to be the same guy from disintegration" but he wasn't credited on wiki for Disintegration which really confused me.  I think he is really atmospheric and beautiful, like the keys on Disintegration.  Like MMJ's first keyboard player, who I always thought must have been big

I was thinking about Pornography. I love all sides of the cure. I love that Paris starts with the figurehead and has Letter to Elise and Dressing up on it. For this I wanted something a little more, i don't know....deminsonal? Pornography (while I love it) is straight up morbid, this has more sides to it.

Especially when compared to the actual first single off this album the song before.

Why is a nice song, but a bit to synthy and poppy for my taste.  How
Beautiful really captures all of the sounds of this band so well.

Great point, this pretty much hit's about three or four dimensions The Cure is able to create.  Disintegration is my favorite but they really just hold steady in one universe for that one

How Beautiful You Are Has Accordion?

This record really does an amazing job of using Strings, Brass, Woodwinds, etc... in just the right places without being cheesy or lame.

and the lyrics.....

And in the road before us
Stood a weary greyish man
Who held a child upon his back
A small boy by the hand
The three of them were dressed in rags
And thinner than the air
And all six eyes stared fixedly on you

The father's eyes said "Beautiful!
How beautiful you are!"
The boy's eyes said
"How beautiful!
She shimmers like a star!"
The childs eyes uttered nothing
But a mute and utter joy
And filled my heart with shame for us
At the way we are

I turned to look at you
To read my thoughts upon your face
And gazed so deep into your eyes
So beautiful and strange
Until you spoke
And showed me understanding is a dream
"I hate these people staring
Make them go away from me!"

Never seen Snakepit live but, they know what they are doing live.  I wasn't sure if it was the intensity of the lights or the wall of sound, or just to be in the same place on the planet as Robert.....but I was in tears by the middle of the first song.

Exactly, I hate when people say The Cure is depressing.  He writes the most beautiful and uplifting songs about BEING IN LOVE.  Just Like Heaven is one of the greatest songs written.  Period.

agree with all of this....they are not even close to the most depressing band I've ever heard. I feel Elliot Smith and even Joy Division has them beat in that dept....I always felt that depressive music got a bad rap anyways.

All I Want rocks with great balance between the keys and guitar, I guess much like the others.

Are there three guitars going in HHH?  I guess it's natural to compare this to the Talking Heads?

You said you hate the sound

You said you hate the way they scrape their brakes all over town
I said pretend it's whales
Keeping their voices down
Such were the grounds for divorce I know

Also, people that say the cure is depressing just don't really know the cure. Can they be? Sure. But listen to Just Like heaven, like you guys were saying, or a song like Mint Car from wild mood swings. Thats like the happiest song ever.

Just finished the album....that was a lot to take in, will indulge in another listen or 2 this week...really liked what I heard. first impression score 7.4.... but I am a man who knows a quality/classic album when I hear one....with more time I'm sure I'd put it round and 8.5 or higher, great choice Ghosts...

...gotta early rise tomorrow gentlemen, I'm off....can't wait to see what #5 will be.

A Thousand Hours  *Rips Heart Out Of Chest*

You can't listen to this song and tell me you don't hear the similarities between Robert and Yim.

I know! Gorgeous!

The Cure can make anyone with a heart, even middleaged men  :) want to dance around like a teenage girl alone in her bedroom.

I never perceived the Cure to be depressing.  I just was never a fan of Robert Smith.  For those diehards that standby this album, do you wish that the album was split?  It's just all over the place.  From the psych explorations to the bouncy dancy to the rockin' closers and everything in between?

That's been the rub on this album is how all over the place it seems to be.  IMO, most of the songs fit so I wouldn't see the need to split the album.

See, I like that about it. It's definitely on purpose, as they know how to make a cohesive album as good (or better) as anybody. See Pornography or Disintegration.

Gotcha.  Definitely gave me a newfound respect for this band for sure.

Awesome!!
I even think Head On The Door is cohesive, even though they are all weird and different songs (I guess that's what's cohesive about it).  I think kiss me was an album made when they knew they could do a Varity of things well.

Head over to the Forum Album Club thread to vote. I'm going to rely on you fine folks to help me with the verdict.

Got a late start on this and it's a long album, will have to continue with this in the next few days. I've always liked The Cure songs I knew from the radio, but never took the time to get to know them more.

I know what you mean, I hate the radio, it's NEVER a good way to get to know a band.  It's just always a bend for great bands, and a suction for shitty ones

This is probably my favorite Cure song, Halo. It's a Wish b side. Excuse the cheesy fan made video.

Wow, this is 1 of those albums that is hard to describe. Ive never listened to The Cure outside of hearing them on the radio now and again. I can appreciate the music, but a lot of this album just feels repetitive to me. Im sure if I listened multiple times I could distinguish things, but musically I want to get into the next song but mostly cant because it all sounded so similar.

I dont know enough about the band, but this strikes me as something nostalgic where its great if you liked it then or grew up in the 80's, but otherwise, its harder to enjoy/appreciate (I realize thats not the case, just how it struck me). A lot of songs blurred into each other. I never thought it was depressing as some people said, but this struck me as music that took advantage of when it was released because most 80's music sucked. I thought the musicianship was better than expected, I especially liked the songs that had an opening buildup, but overall I felt like the songs really blur together and sound similar.

I like the Talking Heads a good bit, and I just feel like they stand up to the test of time more than what Im hearing here, but that might be personal preference.

Favorite Tracks:
1) The Kiss
2) If Only We Could Sleep?
3) The Snakepit
