Title: Leeds
Post by: GO4IT on Sep 23, 2011, 09:48 PM
With a strong likelihood that I'll be in the UK when MMJ is there, due to fortuitous circumstances, I just purchased tix to the Leeds show on Nov. 5.  I didn't want to chance not being able to get in after such a long journey.

Does anyone know about this venue and the popularity of the band in that area?

I have no idea about the venue or the bands popularity in the UK.  Sorry i can't be of use to you but i am sure someone can fill you in about it, maybe CC has some info about both of those questions?  Good luck and have fun!!!

Historic venue, right in the city centre.
Capacity 1,800 floor + 500 balcony

They never played their own show in Leeds before and they haven't been in the area since summer 2008 so hard to tell what the turn out will be.

no, The Who played at The Refectory (Leeds University)

Thanks CC for the info.  This should be a really sweet, and relatively intimate (these days), venue to see them in.

BTW I've had the Who's Live at Leeds since shortly after it came out.  It would be an amazing gesture if MMJ did a cover during this show in recognition of this historic album.  They are capable of killer Who covers.  They have to do this.  And while they're at it, why not invite a couple of locals like, say, Pete and Roger to help out.

That venue does look sweet. My dads side of the family is from Birmingham, UK, and before the NYC show was announced I was strongly considering visiting my British family!

Post by: GO4IT on Oct 17, 2011, 09:10 PM
OK, let me try to restore order here.

First, this is the LEEDS thread, not Birmingham (which I wish I could also go to while across the pond but, unfortunately, not going to happen).  Looks like a fantastic venue.

Second, I saw them at MSG for the NYE gig when the GA area was only the area right up near the stage, not the whole floor.  It was a special night, capping off a triumphant year and worth killing myself by standing for 5 straight hours to stay front and center near the rail.  It will no doubt be another great show at MSG (anyone see a bad MMJ show?) but I do like the idea of seeing them at smaller venues while I still can.  Toronto this year was such a show - we could basically reach out and touch Jim from the rail (see youtubes by catalystmaker who was standing right next to me).

I'm looking forward to a similar experience and a 3 hour show, including Who covers with Roger and Pete for a little "Live at Leeds" redux.  Is that asking too much?

So, my local friends, where is the before show meet-up?
Title: Re: Leeds
Post by: GO4IT on Oct 29, 2011, 11:09 PM
Now we're only one week out from the show.  Any local folks have a suggestion yet on a meet-up place for some beers and grub before the show?
I received a message from Ticketweb a couple of days ago that "The venue has informed us that the door time has changed from 19:00 to 18:00."  I hope this means that they are planning an extra long show.  For those seeing an MMJ show for the first time, they are usually no joke on start times.  Sometimes they are a bit late but for the Ottawa Blues Fest this July they actually started 15 min before their scheduled start time!  Anyone know when the show might start if the "door time" is 6PM?

There's a Wetherspoons pub close by the Academy, which might be a good bet.  Beer and food are cheap and plentiful (good range of real ales), and it'll be plenty big enough for there to be tables available for however many turn up.  Link here:

http://www.jdwetherspoon.co.uk/home/pubs/the-cuthbert-brodrick (http://www.jdwetherspoon.co.uk/home/pubs/the-cuthbert-brodrick)

Doors are now at 6pm, so how about a 4pm meet?
Title: Re: Leeds
Post by: GO4IT on Nov 02, 2011, 10:20 AM
Mark W, that sounds good for a meet-up place.  I'll be there between 4 and 5, probably wearing a blue and white vertical striped shirt and small rimless glasses.  I'm no spring chicken but it will be my 15th show and I'm ready to rock.
It was going to be my 14th show, but I figured out a way to get to Birmingham just in time (although I'll probably miss some of the opening act).  So, it's OK again to talk about Birmingham on this thread  ;) unless there's another one specifically for that show.

So Pete Townshend was on the same Jools Holland show with MMJ a few days ago.
Just a coincidence?
Were they practicing backstage for a couple of Who covers to be busted out at Leeds?
Would it be so terrible to play a Who cover even if Pete or Roger can't make it?
Still dreaming.

Heading out to the meet-up in a few minutes.  Went by the venue a couple of hours ago and Jim was on the second floor balcony fooling around with his acoustic guitar and some music on a stand (no doubt practicing Who songs ;))
I called up to him and we exchanged a few words.

Great gig last night, started early at 8pm which caught quite a number of people out who rolled in around 20:45, with half the gig over. This venue becomes a nightclub on Saturday at 10:30pm, hence the early start. Small but fanatical crowd, who were going ape shit by the end. Only seen MMJ twice before, @ Glastonbury in 2003 and Hop Farm a few years back. Great to see a full headlining MMJ set. Went with my wife and brother who both loved it.

Post by: GO4IT on Nov 06, 2011, 05:19 AM
There were no Who covers played last night but MMJ's version of Live at Leeds lived up to the legend IMHO.  Showtime had been moved up an hour and when SBB, Sunnyday, MarkW and I arrived about 20 min after the 6PM door opening, we had little trouble securing prime spots on the rail.  The Head and the Heart started shortly after 7 and played another excellent half hour set as they did in Birmingham where I saw them for the first time.  MMJ took the stage about 8:50 and tore it up from the beginning.  The sound on the rail was stellar which is not always the case.  They played the whole planned setlist which doesn't usually happen (see below) and pretty much stayed to the basics (e.g. no extended Mahgeetah as we have seen in the states on this tour).  Highlights for me were Circuital, At Dawn, Outta my System, IWSYS and Black Metal.  They were really on last night.  One of the best of many shows I've seen

Victory Dance
Circuital
I'm Amazed
Off the Record
It Beats
At Dawn
Wonderful
Outta my System
First Light
IWSYS
Golden
Smokin from Shottin
Touch Me Part 2
Wonderful Man
Mahgeetah
Encore:
Movin Away
Wordless Chorus
Day is Coming
Black Metal
OBH

The capacity at the O2 Academy in Leeds is 2700. I reckon there were about 800 there last night. It was a great gig, still buzzing from it.

well, they embelished a bit then, said the venue was smaller than that. Still 800 people is tiny. My next show is Madison Square Garden and I'd guess there will be 15,000 people there haha. Last year I saw Jim and Patrick do a benefit show here in Louisville at a venue with a 600 person capacity. That was one of the best nights of my life.

Yeah, it was 7:50, not 8:50 that they took the stage in Leeds.

I was rushed at Manchester airport trying to post this due to an interesting odyssey trying to get back from Leeds to catch a 13:45 flight out of Heathrow.  The early (way too early) bus from Leeds to Manchester got seriously lost.  We ended up in some small neighborhood and got stuck on the narrow street.  Two people with i-phones ended up guiding the bus driver (totally clueless) to the next few stations. People destined for Manchester Airport were freaking out but I ended up making the flight and also the connection to the States which, very fittingly, left from non other than Terminal 5.

Okay here goes, confessions of the bananabear Pt. 1... If I don't make sense, or say something inappropriate it's probably because English isn't my native language, please forgive me. Also, this might be a bit redundant to longtime fans, again please bear with a woman completely awestruck by how awesome this band really is.

Sunnyday and I arrived in Leeds on the 3rd to get some time to get over the jetlag (it's like the third time I use that joke, but I still find it funny so bear with me ;)) and for Sunny to do some serious shopping. It was really nice to walk around Leeds and see all the beautiful old buildings and all the owls.

We were supposed to meet fellow forum friends GO4IT and MarkW before the show and so we did, though we arrived a tad later perhaps... After some serious drinking (mostly Sunny and I) we made our way to the venue and got some excellent spots right at the rail, which was really nice, both because you can see what's going on on stage and in my case, I could also put my cup of water down on the ground without someone spilling it, or perhaps I should say, without someone other than myself spilling it... ooops!

The Head and the Heart were amazing, I'm so glad MMJ decided to have them as openers at Somerset, I fell in love with them at Latitude festival and they were just as wonderful to watch this time around, with beautiful vocals and joyous playing mixed together in a bright and happy swirl of music. Down in the Valley gave me chills and the end part of Rivers and Roads with the drums and the vocals is just brilliant.

Then came MMJ, cue hard time to find words to express that experience... Where to start... Victory Dance is such an excellent opener, okay so I've never heard any other opener, but I still stand by that statement damnit! ;) Another favorite for this show (though truthfully all of it was one big favorite moment) was seeing It Beats 4 U live, I've never realized how Tom's all over that song, but it was amazing to see! How he even manages to move his fingers that fast, I will never know. And At Dawn was a special moment as well, I really like the drums on At Dawn, they feel a bit Timpani-ish (If that makes no sense, well, I'm just a poor layman, what do I know?  ;)) and I'm really fond of that. Really I could go on to name every song they played really, so I'll just stop here with the song excitement and say that OH MY GOD! This band... this band, well you all know of course, but I'm still amazed every time, in every format.

I was surprised by how much Carl just... moves or however you'd describe it, it's like this massive wave of energy coming from him to an extent which I hadn't previously picked up from Okonokos or other videos. Again, noticed this at Latitude and Somerset as well of course, but equally amazed each time, that man is on fire! Tom seems a bit more calm and collected to me, just as much energy, just more focused somehow. And Patrick, oh Patrick, one journalist wrote a while back that "Patrick Hallahan drums like Shiva, multi-armed and out for destruction" and I don't think truer words were ever spoken. He seems like a force of nature, alive with energy and passion. He's like a big lion! And Bo has so much going on I can't even keep up, but I especially like him on Moving Away, there was one interview where he described himself as the color guy who adds frosting on top of the cake, but on Moving Away, I think he's the cake! And Jim of course, there's so many nuances to that voice, it soars, it screams, it whispers, it woohoos, he can really do anything with it and still have it sound like the best thing you've ever heard. I'm also astonished (just trying to think of another word other than amazed ;)) by how in tune the band is with each other and you can somehow feel that bond, but still feel included, it's a thing of magic.

Okay, end rambling, onto Pt. 2.

They never played their own show in Leeds before and they haven't been in the area since summer 2008 so hard to tell what the turn out will be.

I may be mistaken, but I have a feeling that they played at The Cockpit, a looong time ago?

Sounds like you were treated to a couple of fine shows in Manchester and London.  I would have particularly liked to have seen the Gaggle on Black Metal.  They look like naturals for the part.
Nice meeting you and Kajsa.  Definitely check in when you come to the States!

Found this on THATH's Facebook page a while back, thought I'd post it here in case Mr. MarkW and GO4IT hadn't see in.  :)

Nice find SBB!!  There we are, all FOUR of us on the rail a bit to center stage of Jim.  Brings back amazing memories.

I'm not sure I mentioned this to anyone but I was touring Leeds the day of the show, and stumbled out of the City Museum in the early afternoon which is just about a block from the O2 Academy where MMJ was playing that night.  So, I figured I'd take a look around the venue to see what was going on.  I didn't see much until I looked up and there, right above me, was Jim sitting on a second floor balcony with his acoustic guitar and sheet music on a stand.  I shouted up to him and we exchanged a few words including me saying how great they were and lamenting about the monitor catching fire a couple days before in Birmingham.  As I was walking away I took the photo below.  I was wondering what he was up to and now, in retrospect, I'll bet he was practicing his songs for the X-Mas iTunes session!

Almost missed the one year anniversary of the Leeds show!  SBB, Sunny, Mark W and I had a wonderful time on the rail in addition to some quality time at bars before and after (even if Townsend didn't show up for Live at Leeds, Part II).

One of the wonderful things about this band is being able to connect with like-minded people around the world and this made the show extra special for me.  I've got the setlist from the show in my hand right now - BM into OBH to end - hard to beat that!

Oh wow, can't believe it's already been a year, it doesn't feel like it at all. Time really flies by. Anyhow, that was such a good night! Love meeting fellow fans!
