Not part of the Roll Call but plan on going. Wouldn't miss a MMJ show within a 3 hour radius.

I could be wrong, but my impression is that these roll call threads are simply a chance to announce your presence at a certain venue, regardless of your status as members of the roll call "club"?

Absolutely!

Any "roll calls" under The Shows section of the forum are simply a way to have forum members share what shows they are attending and how many non-members will be tagging along (ie. "johnnYYac +3").

The "Roll Call" fan club was (as best I can tell) coined by the fact that we forum folks have been setting up roll calls for shows since long before I ever joined.

In other words, don't confuse "roll calls" with "Roll Call".

Where are you all staying if you are from out of town?

Dylanquirt recommended staying at Hollywood and Highland area and taking the metro train to the show.  Sounds like a solid rec to me.  Haven't landed on a hotel yet, though.

I'm driving in from Phoenix the day of the show and getn nervous about making it through LA traffic in time to settle into a hotel  8), relax with some cocktails , wait in the will call line :-\ and get a comfy spot in the pit :D.  I'm planning on leaving PHO about 8:00 to miss rush hour, so i should make it to the eastern outskirts of LA between 1:00 and 2:00.  Also, will probably cough up extra $$ for a close hotel to mitigate the risk.  Do any locals have tips or warnings etc that would make my navigation through LA a smooth one?

Also, since it is already a 7 hour journey, I'm gonna take in the Black Mountain show the next night at the Greek (then maybe down to SD for an MMJ encore).  Is it feasible to cab it to the Greek from the Universal Studios area without going broke?

blucas:  you might be able to take public transpo TO the event and save cab fare for the ride back to your hotel.  if you stay at the universal sheraton (or anything adjacent to universal) you can take the metro red line to the sunset/vermont station (4 stops), then take either the DASH bus up vermont to los feliz blvd and walk the last 15 min (the greek is on vermont ave.), or take the Metro bus from the red line up to the greek (not sure which bus line it is, but there you are), OR take a cab from the metro station to the greek (10 min)

i live walking distance from the greek, but often end up driving at least part way b/c of time issues.  ;D

re: show roll call:  i have a ticket but hesitate to add myself to the roll call before i know i can leave work for this. fingers crossed!

Thanks moocho for the feedback ms. Y...like death, taxes, and incredible MMJ shows, your badassery is a certainty!  The metro line with a 15 min walk in LA sounds like the right kind of adventure for this trip...gonna soak me up some LA street vibes!  Hope your work situation turns in your favor so you can see the MMJ show.

Fredo, we are staying at the Beverly Garland Holiday Inn, about a mile from universal city walk I think.  I would reverse the trip and make home base near the Greek, but I would end up driving my friends crazy worrying about getting to MMJ on time...I get pretty neurotic about settling into a comfort zone for a show.  The logistics in getting to the Greek on Friday will leave much more room for error  :)

Cheers

blucas, i'm an ass.  the show is at universal so you don't need to go through any of the transpo hoops i described.  (how did i get Greek in my head? ??? )

Ms. Y...I may have confused the situation a bit by bringing another show into the mix :embarassed:

Jambase reported that Black Mountain is playing the Greek the night AFTER the MMJ Gibson show so I was asking about logistics between the two (nothing on the Greek website yet tho ???).  I have never been to the Greek, looove Black Mountain, and a Friday night to boot, so Karma has certainly shined brightly if this is true.  We typically have to wait weeks or months between good shows in Phoenix and now might get a "2 for 1" with our road trip to LA!!! :D

...besides...the extra replies in sorting through the confusion are helping to make the stats for the LA roll call more respectable  ;) (NY MSG Roll Cal: 494; LA Gibson: 22)

blucas, I'm coming in from PHX, too.  I just nabbed a room at the BLVD hotel in studio city, it's supposed to be 900 yards to the venue, nice!

I don't think you have anything to worry about if you are leaving PHX at 8:00.

I'm gonna go to the San Diego show, too.  I'll have to check out Black Mountain to see if I'd like them.  Not sure what I'll do otherwise, it depends on if my wife can come and if not, if a friend comes instead.

Looking forward to two shows in three nights, yeah!

Shug, I need to clarify one thing...Jambase announced the 12/2 BM show for the Greek, but I can't find reference to it anywhere else (not on band's site or the Greek site)  :embarassed:  I hope my jubilation was not premature, but keeping fingers crossed.  Anyway, enough about OTHER bands; glad to see fellow Phoenicians supporting MMJ!  Safe travels!

I am not sure but am eagerly awaiting the email thats suppose to come out this week...which will most likely get lost in my junk folder......i hope that the sound check is closer to the actual show time - I have  a feeling it wont be a "real" sound check.....but more of a casual short set.....we will see

Since none of us know anything about the soundcheck I will give my theory. First I am not going, because I bought 4 tickets, and it just was not practical. I think it will be a real soundcheck, especially for the SF, SD shows. That is a tight schedule, and I doubt they will have time to do a real soundcheck, and then have a mock one for fans. Setting up shows back to back in different cities is a hell of a lot of work. Combined with activities of daily living, I doubt the band has much time to waste. I would prefer a real one anyway. Once in a lifetime experience.

I emailed them about getting more info on the sound check....they said expect email 3-5 days before. I also asked about time and got this...

"Since the artist's availability varies day to day while on tour, the exact times cannot be confirmed until closer to the show date. Soundcheck's can be as early as 2:30pm and even as late as 5pm. Please do not hold that as an absolute time, but rather just a ballpark figure as to when this soundcheck could occur. I hope that assists in some way."

Where are people meeting up pre-show?  Not sure if there are any good independent bars in that area. The whole CityWalk place looks too corporate for my tastes, but it is close to the venue.

I'm staying at the Blvd Hotel, which has a little bar and I'm thinking about eating dinner either at Ca del Sole http://www.cadelsole.com/menu.php  (http://www.cadelsole.com/menu.php) or middle eastern Mantee http://www.manteecafe.com/ (http://www.manteecafe.com/)  (which does not serve alcohol  :'()

I'm also wondering if the bar at the Sheraton is any good (corporate, I know, but its gotta be better than what's at CityWalk).  They've got a happy hour 5-7.  And its close to the venue.

we'll most likely be enjoying some amazing beers at the Blue Palms, Mrs Y's rec for the Panatages show, which proved to be amazing...and it's pretty close to the Gibson as well.

Still in need of 2 Pit tix if anyone has a line on some.

Hmmm, walterfredo, The Blue Palms is in the opposite direction from the venue from where I'm staying.  Maybe I'll make it there, but I'm not sure.  I would like to meet up with some fans, though.  Its only a couple stops on the Metro and then a short walk I believe.  What time you gonna be there?  Is anybody else in?

I hear they have Pliny the Elder on tap, that sounds good!

A pre-show celebration sounds soooooo fun, but I cant make any plans until we know with certainty what time the sound check begins. I wonder if they will ask the people attending the sound check to exit the venue after the sound check.  :-\  I pre-show toast in honor to the boys would ideal, but in case I cant make it cheers!!

The Blue Palms looks intriguing...lobster mac and cheese and of course cocktails.  It looks to be only about 3 miles from Gibson, so that is a plus.  I'm bringing a buddy who just ripped his shoulder up pretty bad, so we'll probably head to Gibson at doors open so we don't have to fight through the crowd to find a good spot in the pit.  Will check in on the boards later but would assume to be at the Blue Palms about 5 o' clock range.

Walterfredo, I may have one extra pit ticket...don't know if you can use a single, but I'll follow up with you at the beginning of next week.

I went to the Blue Palms before the Pantages show, and it was way too packed and loud. Could not get a seat or even talk with my friends. Citywalk is corporate, but there was a brewery last time I was there, and it shares a parking lot with the Gibson, which is quite a big plus.

Has anyone heard anything from Roll Call on how the sound check is going to work out? Its now two days before the show and I have no idea what time the sound check is scheduled to begin? Do we just present our pit ticket and get admitted to the sound check? Am I the only one freaking out?  Awwwwwwww!!!!!   :D

So we've got tix for the sound check and received my e-mail explaining where to be and what time.  Also have pit tixs for the show. Am I being a nervous nellie about losing a choice spot in line for the G.A. if we go into the sound check and then have to leave and get back in line after?  Or is it all way too early to worry about?  Learned to loved the GA seats so we can get on the rail but also gives me an anxiety attack about being on line early enough.  If I have to stand behind some tall dude all night I'm going to be extremely sad.  Somebody talk me off a ledge....

I don't know the venue or other details, but I should think you'll be okay.  If soundcheck ends by 4:30, doors are likely 6 or 6:30.  I can't imagine a huge line that early on a Thursday night.  Just head to line up as soon as you exit soundcheck.  Forgive me if I am wrong.  Any locals familiar with Gibson Amph care to chime in?

I think you're spot on John. I was thinking the same. Plus this show is mostly reserved seating, with a ga pit. I don't know how many pit tix they sold, but I'd be more concerned if the whole venue was ga.

Some awesome surprises. Evelyn! Phones, War Begun. Tons of technical difficulties. Seemed their frustration mounted through the night. So when they finally started going smoothly they seemed to play like they were getting their aggression out and felt better. Sound check party gave us three 1/2 songs. Perhaps not worth the extra cash but we did get a sweet poster signed by the band. Hoping for smoother sailing in sanfran tonight! Seems like they had to maybe tweak the original play list because of all the tech problems. I still had a great time regardless of all the problems.

Seems like Jim went at least 4 songs in a row with little or no guitar. And, the extended intros and outros to cover for the techs working out the issues cutting into stage time. Those factors had to affect the setlist.
Hopefully, the upside will be a different set tonight (and minus issues)

It was such a fun show and they did a little bit different jamming in some of the songs, always good!   We got in the pit so that was super sweet.. real close up!

War Begun was amazing as was Phone Went West!  It beats was such a sweet surprise and so was Evelyn.  During that break in the song they all froze like statues.  Movin Away was beautiful!  The last few songs had horns from the opener, Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings.  Very Sweet!!! :)

Loved the soundcheck, what a treat.. it was hilarious hearing jim talk about how the simpsons ride changed his life!  Also the version of slow slow tune was most excellent!

Great show as I expected but was a bit shorter than I thought it would be, it went by so fast!!

p.s. i also loved jim's jazz hands and that he brought out the golden bear in his hands at the end while thanking everyone!

yeah, the early technical difficulties led to some extended jamming.  the jamming continued the rest of the night.   Really fun show and different than the last few i've been to

Highlights were PWW (played at much better tempo than they were doing in 08), Highly Suspicious and of course War Begun)   3 of my hopefulls!

sorry i didn't keep track of set but i'm sure it'll be posted coplete soon enough

Show was insane! Roll call was the best idea, as I got GA and it was worth every cent.

Phone Went West (w/ jams)
War Begun (w/ jams)
Smokn from Shootn (the steady kick drum was cutting right through me)
Moving Away (the statue part...haha)
It Beats for you

Those are my highlights. 4th time I have seen them and def def def the best!

5th show of the tour for me, and while it wasn't my favorite, I was surprised to hear some things I hadn't on this tour.  The people I was with who have never seen them were blown away, so the boys did their job.

Soundcheck was way cool.  Setlist was:

1. Golden (always nice)
2. Slow Slow Tune
3. I'm Amazed
4. The beginning of Victory Dance

No technical problems during the soundcheck!  It was a bummer to see Jim struggling throughout the show last night, but he seemed to take it well.

War Begun!  Fuck yes!  Phone Went West too, I was so stoked!   :D

Even though they had all the sound difficulties I think we still benefited by getting to see the boys jam so many of the songs out.  They started jamming while shit was getting fixed but everyone seemed to enjoy it, especially Jim, so they started jamming almost every song during the 1st hour + of the set.  It was rad, very different.

So glad to hear It Beats For You again live too!  Missed that the last 4 or 5 times I've seen them.

They had the horn section from the Dap Kings for pretty much the entire encore, 2 saxes and a trumpet.  I was hoping for Masterplan right after Black Metal but no dice.  Got Highly Suspicious again instead, the only Jacket song that just doesn't really move me.  Loved the solo though, always do.

I thought it was a great show overall.  Lots of slow jams.  Would have loved to hear Wonderful somewhere between Golden and Smokin, that was a rad slow jam section though none the less.

Thanks again boys, for another fantastic evening!

It was great meeting you and Mr.Rizzos last night. Have a blast tonight and please send they boys my love! :)

The best thing they've done with that song was picked the tempo up and got the shuffle going. Made a great song even better.

I took a first-timer, but a true rock music fan, who knew the song Golden, but really had no idea that MMJ could rock out.  Halfway through Victory Dance she leans over and says "I'm sold, I love this band".  I said "just wait, it gets better".  Needless to say, she was blown away and thoroughly converted.  That was very satifsfying and kinda funny, because it was only my second show myself.  I loved being so close to the stage, about three people back between Bo and Jim, a sweet spot.
When the bass kicks in on Victory Dance, it just rattles your entire body, I frickin' love that!!! I dug Circuital later in the set, I think its more powerful after the momentum of the set has built up.  Evelyn's Not Real was a cool treat and I was impressed how strong and rocking the ending jam was after the country twang of the first part.
I didn't recognize Phone or War, but I enjoyed the hell out of every song they played whether I knew it or not, even Highly Suspicious, which I don't really love on the album.  There is nothing like MMJ live, they are on another level of live rock greatness than just about any band still in existence.

My friend knows a few Hollywood film and music biz folks so we got backstage (not the inner backstage where the band hangs out, really just an afterparty for the "special people", not that exciting, just another cash bar and some chips and salsa) and there were many people she knew seeing the band for the first time and even all these jaded Hollywood types were invariably impressed with the show, noting how commanding Jim's stage presence is, yet he still comes across as humble and kind.  They also dug all the styles of music the band can do and really excel at.  So it was cool for that.

SF setlist looked like it was on fire, bummed I missed it, looking forward to SD tonight!

I have a friend in SoCal who is going through some serious tough times.  I sent him Wonderful via spotify and told him that it would improve his mood.  Totally hooked him on MMJ and he just told me he got a ticket for tonight's show!  I hope the show is a true barn burner for him!

I took my nephew and another friend, neither of which had seen MMJ.  They were blown away from the first note of VD.  I kept looking over at my nephew, who had a perma-grin that lasted the entire show and into the next day. His face must hurt from smiling so much.  If only we had extended the trip into SF the next night...what an incredible setlist those guys got!!

FUN SHOW! Good Times before and after.

I was laughing pretty hard when Sharon Jones pulled up Ru-Day to come dance with her.
My favorite part of the whole show was the encore and Phone Went West. The band had to have deleted a few songs because the stage crew literally ripped up the setlist after the show. It was really nice meeting Ru-day(thanks a bunch), Apeskies, Larry, Amia, Rizzo, and his girl.

I'm hoping for Lowdown and Xmas Curtain tonight in SD.

I hope you get Xmas Curtain tonight too Non Sin Breaux.  So fun hanging out with you and Ru-Day. I got a couple pics of Ru-Day up on stage with SJ - just need to figure out how to get them out of my phone and into the Forum.  We also have that poster for you from the pre-show!  Just need to figure out how to get it to you!

He called Jim and Patrick "dorks". Otherwise, he was rather complementary. They may be goofy at times, but I take umbrage at calling them dorks.

way better shot of Ru-day than what I got on my cell phone.  Dork!!???  I think not!  Patrick's antics on the drums during Run Through is my favorite part of that one live.

Ru-day...you were a brave and amicable soul for getting up on stage.  I'm guessin' that you didn't have much of a choice though...Sharon Jones doesn't look like a girl who would take no for an answer!  Man she kept you up there for a long time too!

I was the one standing a couple rows back who gave you an "atta boy" pat on the shoulder after you returned from the stage.  Disclaimer:  I was NOT part of the group who kept falling down at your feet towards the end of the MMJ set

Blucas,

Thank you Sir! Oh, and I clearly remember you patting me in the back and saying that...thanks for the good vibes. I was clearly embarrassed/uncomfortable being up there for sooo long, but your little lady would not let me get off the stage. Between the drunken girls behaving like a wild pack of beasts and the poor guy having a seizure attack, I felt like I was going to have an emotional overload.  At the end of the night it was all well worth standing...our boys killed it!!  :)

Same here Walter. Just got home and am still amped a bit.  I had a great time at both, and hope to definitely do it again some day. Hopefully I'll have more time to hang with you then, but it was good to meet you and Brice. Glad to help with the ticket.
