Victory Dance is great an all, but at your ideal MMJ show how would they open?
My vote: At Dawn!! So beautiful how this song opened at T5, which is the only time I've seen it as an opener. I'm sure when they were touring for the album they kicked off with it quite often, though.
Great thread!
At Dawn, Evil Urges, Wordless Chorus
Definitely agree with At Dawn (esp. from the T5). I am putting some love in for Evil Urges - as posted on another thread, Evil Urges with horns to open a show = great energy
Never would happen but Dancefloors would work for me as well
And even less likely I'd take Lowdown
At dawn and the dark
At Dawn definitely. All album openers with the exception of TTF and ISM are great show openers. They opened with Mageetah in Lexingon this year. Cool cause it was unexpected, but honestly VD the rest of the year was an awesome opener.
Best closer - Its About Twilight Now (if they played it INSANELY, like they do in the Demos Package on WFPK.
TIWTCWY sets a nice tone!
OBH. Get some blood pumping early doors.
A lot of these have opened before and are great starts!
At Dawn (T5 #2)
One Big Holiday (April 2010)
Tonight I Want To Celebrate With You (April 28, 2010)
Mahgeeta (?)
Wordless Chorus (Okonokos)
Evil Urges (2008)
Victory Dance (2011)
More outside the box, not sure, but would be willing to experience it...
War Begun (worried about premature earjaculation!)
Heartbreakin' Man (T5 #1)
The Bear
The Way That He Sings (this would definitely work!)
Off the Record
I'll stop there.

TWTHS was an opener at Chicago last year, after a short Rollin back instrumental
I think TIWTCWY would be sweet...also rollin back and at dawn
Not sure if it's been done before but I think Into the Woods would make a great opener. Probably has something to do with my obsession with that song though.

yea definitely a closer, it would be annoying to blow a load the first song
My Morning Jacket - War Begun (Nashville 8/15/08) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q4XMsUmOEVY#)
Victory Dance would be a great opener.. o wait
as stated in another thread... HOTBM would be a wild start. As well as Highly and Anytime
Out of the 12 times I've seen em' I got to go with OBH in Nashville 2010. It was like the band was there to kick ass and take names later. The engery seemed to filter through the rest of the night. I think they heard someone say "no way they blow the roof off this building", "yeah, well watch this"! ;D
One Big Holiday
Gideon
It Beats 4 U
The Way That He Sings
Off The Record
Touch Me I'm Going To Scream Pt. 1

one of my favorite set lists
I remember that show. The middle of my 3 show run. Carried Away, Friends Again, and Losin' Yo Head. What a night!

Agreed. I was at this show as well. It was just plain awesome. The OBH opener was a pleasant suprise.
Not sure if you remember, but Mrs. peafunk & I met you at the Flying Saucer before the show. 'twas a true pleasure  That place had an insane beer selection

I do believe so! You were at a small table with stool-height chairs, not at a booth where Crispy and Flyguy were, yes? You wore a ballcap of some sort? From PA?
If so, and regardless, I recall meeting some very cool folks throughout my 5 day, 4 night, 3 show adventure.
MMJ opened w/OBH in Birmingham, Nashville, and Atlanta, plus Jazzfest in NO. Then, they started to open with At Dawn and Tonight IWTCWY here and there.
See you and Mrs. peafunk in NYC next month!!!

Indeed looking forward to NYC
mmmm great thread!
im going with OBH, Im amazed would be a good start,
wordless is always up there
December will be my 11th show (12th if you count a Jim James solo) and this thread had me going over all the openers I've seen so far and I found it pretty weird that Victory Dance is the only one that they have duplicated (less weird since 5 of them were at Terminal 5 with zero chance of a repeat, but still.). But to answer the question, my favorite was Anytime. It really sets a good tone for the rest of the show.
Tonight I Want To Celebrate With You - Newport 2008
Anytime - Philly 2008
Move on Up - NYC 2008
One Big Holiday - New Orleans 2010
Heartbreakin' Man - NYC 2010
At Dawn - NYC 2010
Mahgeetah - NYC 2010
Wordless Chorus - NYC 2010
Evil Urges - NYC 2010
Victory Dance - Hunter Mountain 2011
Victory Dance - Philly 2011
Hope to see the boys open a show with "At Dawn" once in my lifetime :D

the album release, storytellers, that rolling stone article, and those V-Dance festival shows made me a true fan. the lyrics are superb.

At my first MMJ concert in Chicago, Anytime's opening riff nearly blew out my eardrums, and did indeed blow my 13 year old mind. At Dawn is pretty awe-inspiring too.
Holyoke last year opening with Steam Engine was pretty killer.

not to thread drift, but that whole show was a highlight for me. Sparse crowds and a great setlist. Steam engine as opener, plus where to begin, honest man, think I'm going to hell, lowdown, bermuda highway. You don't see many setlists like that anymore.

The setlists lately have been pretty ho-hum with one or two gems sprinkled in. I hope they're saving up for this leg of the tour and the blowout at MSG.

Gotta figure they're going out with a bang at MSG!! Might be wishful thinking, but you've got to bring your A-game, and bust out when you play the Mecca.
I was there for Furthur a couple of weeks ago, and even though Bobbie and Phil have played there a ton, they friggin rocked out!! If they can still bring it to MSG after all these years, I'm thinking MMJ will have no trouble kickin' ass and takin' names!

I sure hope so. That's why I picked that concert to be my last one for the year. I had debated going to Florida and seeing them twice, but then I decided that MSG would be the best show to go to. Plus, I'll finally get to meet so many of you.

My Morning Jacket "One Big Holiday" - 04.24.10 - New Orleans JazzFest 2010 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rE9LGqy1JKo#ws)
My first show was Atlanta in 2006 and they opened with At Dawn. I was expecting Wordless Chorus since they had been touring for Z for a while. In retrospect the set list from that night was the best I've ever seen - heavy on at dawn, it still moves and Z which are my favorite albums. That was my first Phone Went West and by far the best, plus I got Easy Morning Rebel, Xmas curtain and by my car!
The at dawn opener is really perfect.
I wasn't at the AD night at T5 but would love to have At Dawn as an opener. Here's hoping!
