Not counting b-sides, I've never been a big fan of "They Ran" or "Run Thru". More recently, "Holding On To Black Metal" isn't a fave of mine.

And I know I'm not going to be very popular for this opinion around here....  :embarassed:

Yes, but would you all SKIP these tunes if they came up while listening to MMJ in a shuffle or mix?  I have songs I like less than others, but don't think I'd hit the "NEXT" button on my mp3 player for any MMJ.  That thought is what prompted me to create the thread, though I totally respect your opinions.  Well, except for Scotty.  ;)

1. Two Halves- dont know why they even made this.

Thats it. That is literally the only song they have ever made that I dont like.

I thought they were the type of songs that really blast off live compared to on record.  IMHO.  Do you skip them listening at home too?

Underline + Bold + Scathing Commentary...Fully has declared war on TDIC   ;)

When I first heard TDIC before Circuital came out, I thought it was kinda cheesy (the "da da das" and corny lyrics), but when I heard the entire album, it started to make sense. I do appreciate its lushness.

When in an impatient mood, I too am guilty of skipping Off the Record (blasphemy I know) and the middle of EU.

Butch Cassidy but I have to say I am not a big fan of the whole Tennessee Fire Album in general, too slow for my taste. I do like the Tennessee Fire Songs when played live and the versions of the songs on the AC EP though.

10.  Golden

Title: Re: Top 10 MMJ songs you'd skip
Post by: blucas on Apr 14, 2012, 05:15 PM
I typically like what MMJ has done with most of the TTF songs with alternate arrangements or when they play them live.  However, after hearing them open a show with The Dark in 2008 I put that on the top of my skip list.  It definitely dragged the energy down and it took a few more songs for them to get into a groove after that.

Ruckus, I have to give you big props for actually following thread direction and listing 10  :), but Outta My System is a masterpiece. ;)

I kind of understand the Golden inclusion. It's a beautiful song, but one thats included so much in the setlists that we've all heard it so many times. If there could be one song that might be overplayed, it's this one. Sometimes I skip it too even though I love it, because I've heard it so many times.

Well, I created this thread in response to the recent top 10 songs thread, when I realized, while its easy/hard to list 10 great Jacket tunes, I cannot honestly say I'd bother literally skipping any track.  There is never a "right" or "wrong" answer to these kinds of threads, but I find them a bit more interesting.  Granted, I'm taking the easy way out saying I wouldn't skip any song, but that's based on reality.  If I had a "Sophie's Choice" situation, I'd probably omit... Hmmm.

Agree with the OBH sentiment as well Davy.  Golden is just played out and doesn't do anything for me lyrically.  Throw in a live Bear or By My Car or How Could I Know once in a while eh?

Going backward in time...

1. Slow Slow Tune (I would include First Light, but in concert it rocks).
2. Highly Suspicious (Only song I will walk to the bathroom for).
3. Sec Walkin (I have flashbacks to the Family Guy episode where Randy Newman was following them singing left foot, right foot... or something like that.)
Randy Newman Singing what he sees From Family guy (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QWpIMFEe2ds#)
4. Aluminum Park - (I actually love Remnants and not this one.)
5. Into the Woods - (But I will give love to the T5 version and that's it).
6. Rollin' Back - (just waayyyy too slow).
7. One in the same - (Ditto)
8. If It Smashes Down (Ditto)
9. By My Car (Ditto)
10 Butch Cassidy (Ditto)

That said, Highly Suspicious is a 10/10 of awfulness.  The rest, the world doesn't come to an end.

Gardenparty, clunky is a good description of The Dark!  I do love By My Car though... I hear the early foundation for At Dawn in it (song, not album). Does that make me only one "cray"? ;)

one of my first mmj moments was losing my basic motor skillz upon hearing the first dwamp dee dwamp dahdah dee dwamps of Highly suspicious. far from alone you are...

the only ones i skip are two halves, live versions of the day is coming, most live versions of HOTBM, and it's been a great 3 or 4 years (but i still listen to that one more than two halves)

The album version is best played loud in a car on the German Autobahn, same goes for Touch Me Part 2 as well as "Tonight I want to celebrate with you" the Las Vegas version :)

Hell, My Morning Jacket is the best music to listen to on long drives anyway :)

Ok I saw Rollin Back on this list and now I'm just questioning some folks sanity. I listened to ISM yesterday and pressed back after Rollin Back twice. It's amazing. It's my number one "white whale" to hear live
I hear you!  scosby2 was nice enough to call me on his cell phone while he was at the ISM night of T5 and I was stuck here in NH.  The sound through our cell phones was HORRIBLE, but hearing Rolling Back even this way was awesome.  I remember standing outside, wanting to soar across the night sky to NYC and be there but, alas, I cannot fly.

At least we got the intro to Rollin' Back in Detroit this summer. I would have loved for them to play the whole thing.

By My Car is one of my favorites to play on guitar. Such simple but pretty chord changes.

I still can't sit through Two Halves. I guess the lyrics are just too facile.

I'd skip The Day is Coming - although I don't think I've surprised many of you with that one
Two Halves
Sec Walkin
Aluminum Park
Moving Away
First Light on record - it kicks ass during a show even though the lyrics are dull.
and I'm graduating Touch Me, Pt2 to that position too. I've just heard it too much although I enjoy it.

I think to appreciate Aluminum Park you have to love '70s style glam rock, because that's what it is. Same with What a Wonderful Man.

Needless to say, I love early '70s glam. (Hate late '80s glam with everything I am, though. Go figure.)

Holding onto Black Metal = pee break every time.

The overdubbed background vocals and Bo's overpowering keyboard make this thing a mess live.  Almost insulting coming from the best live band out there - OMHO, of course.

Also don't care for Highly Suspicious - and OBH is turning into MMJ's One More Saturday Night - except it happens at almost every show, not just on Saturday.

Please keep in mind that I would endure 1000 of each just to catch a sweet Cobra, Bear or Bermuda Highway

It's funny, as I started this thread because I honestly don't think I'd skip a song if I was playing any of their albums.  Maybe during a shuffle of my iPod. Songs I can live without (a different standard than the premise of the OP)?

Sec Walking
Movin Away

I don't usually skip songs, but songs I don't care for:

Sec Walkin' (I'm walking to the TV during this tune)
Movin' Away
Librarian
Day is Coming
Two Halves
Highly Suspicious - well, the end jam is fine
Outta My System
Slow Slow Tune - we don't need to be told that it's a slow, slow tune.  It's quite evident.

I will be in the pit in the Wiltern tomorrow with a musician friend of mine that Two Halves always reminded me of. I finally played it for him and he said, "Yeah, it is Merseybeat, one of my favorite kinds of music". He loved that song. Evil Urges was simply a venture into different musical styles. Smokin and Touch Me are the only songs that seemed inspired by themselves.

So in an effort to post to this thread, I listened through all the songs today (or at least the begginings) thinking I would come across something where I went, 'meh, I don't need to hear this.'. But really I didn't, if anything, because the songs I thought weren't my favorites are the ones I listen to least, hearing them made me think, 'hmm, this isn't bad at all, why don't I really like this song.'. So I got nuffin'.

However, a couple of songs I really like, appear to be almost unanimously unloved - Librarian and The Day Is Coming.  Really like Jim's voice on Librarian and The Day Is Coming almost reminds me of a prog/pop song.  I dig them both, but everyone's got an opinion...

I'm kind of amazed that so many of you are choosing EU and Circuital songs? Is it because you've been fans since way back when and they've changed a little too much for you? I've only known them since Z and the thought of skipping anything on their last three records is crazy to me.

That being said I actively dislike The Dark. It's the only song by MMJ I've never liked and don't think I ever will.
Title: Re: Top 10 MMJ songs you'd skip

I discovered MMJ 36 days before the release of Evil Urges.  However, during those 36 days, I listened extensively to the back catalog and tons of tapings.  As a fan of Pink Floyd and Grateful Dead, I found the early recordings of MMJ reminded me of early Floyd and Dead tracks.  The Dark sounds like something Syd Barrett would write.  I also hear The Doors in early MMJ.  So I think we bring our previous tastes to the way we regard MMJ, old and new.

listening to the Twilight from Red Rocks w/ Bo wailing that organ sound totally sounded like the Doors to me.

Have you listened to the Red Rocks version of The Dark?   That song was not one of my favorites early on but it's grown on me.   It's great live.

I got into MMJ through Okonokos so I was all about ISM and Z at first, then At Dawn, then got really into Tennessee Fire.   I like most of EU and Circuital - and some of those songs are fantastic live - but to me they don't come close to the early stuff.   But I love how they evolve and try new things - I really like Highly Suspicious and Black Metal which a lot of people don't, so it's not about wanting them to stay stuck in the past.

Let me start by saying I still love these songs in their own way, and I refuse to list Good Intentions, It's been a great 3 or 4 years etc.  That's cheating and you know it!

No order here:

Holdin' On To Black Metal (Probably my least favorite song in the catalogue)
Highly Suspicious
If It Smashes Down
I Needed it Most (This one and the one above it are probably the two songs I've listened to the least.  Just doesn't hold the greatness of the rest of the album.)
Holy
Outta My System
Two Halves
Remnants (I have to be in the mood for this one)

Tonight has a whole new life these days - take a listen to Pc2 - perfectly placed in the se and winds up with light omnichord.  Love that song.  Also falling back in love with PWW and War Begun - they've been on a loop in my truck since I downloaded pc shows

...didn't want to just go the easy way by naming all of circuital.

o sorry...not that kind of party
Exactly what kind of party would that be? It doesn't seem like a Thanksgiving party or like the potluck we had at work on Friday. I'm trying hard to imagine the party where this would be considered acceptable behavior. One year at Christmas, my uncle got so drunk that he took off all his clothes and shit in the living room, but no one thought it was socially acceptable. :D

And I love They Ran

Unrelated to OP:

I feel like it is nearly impossible to choose a favorite on Tennessee Fire.

I Think I Am Going to Hell
IWBTWYD
The Bear
They Ran
War Begun
The Dark

are all neck and neck for me

Haha! I understand.... Obviously these are not songs that are skipped every time...not even close! But if I HAD to pick.... I think I might hold Smokin responsible for breaking up Dondante-->Run Thru.... but I have gotten over that...I HAD to pick!

Don't judge me!
