Dr. Dog is the best. Alabama Shakes is great. Houndmouth EP is pretty good. I can't remember what came out in the earliest part of the year anymore.

I just heard this for the first time yesterday, and it's awesome. Cosmogramma and Los Angeles are two great albums, and this one is right up there. UTQC is one of the best things I've heard this year, and it'll definitely be on my year-end list.
Lots of love for Spiritualized here. I used to be a big fan (seen 'em umpteen times), but I just can't get excited about Jason's output any more. Not even listened to it, because I don't want to be disappointed. :undecided:

I just listened to Band of Skulls. I can see that being added to the list after a few more listens. Coexist is so/so for me.
the lee ranaldo album is fantastic and recommend to anyone who enjoys noise rock.. maybe a little more melodic then SY though..
The Chris Robinson Brotherhood account for two of my favorite albums of 2012.
I'm digging Big Moon Ritual better now but that's because I've been listening to it all summer and I haven't really had a chance to really get into The Magic Door yet.
Tame Impala comes out on iTunes on Tuesday. I traveled to that date in the future and have determined it is a contender.

I agree about Lee Ranaldo. Like that one quite a bit. It didn't crack my top list, but it is way better than I thought it would be.
Just heard the new Beth Orton and would have to add that one to my list.
Also, thanks to recommendations I saw on here, I checked out the new Hearless Bastards and really liked it.
For me thus far...
1. Jack White "Blunderbuss"

I've been meaning to check this out. I really liked their first two albums.
i think i am finally getting closer to my real end of year list. turning out to be a good year after all with a top 12 list for me. I even think this is the correct order.

no one has mentioned Fake Blood by Floating Action. That came out this year, no? Is it just not as good as Desert Etiquette?
Fake Blood is fantastic. A big time grower for sure. I wouldn't say it's better or worse than his self-titled or Desert Ettiquette -- I think all his albums are equally awesome. They're hard to tell apart actually. You could also mix and match tracks from each and it wouldn't be weird, they have a very consistent sound.
I haven't made a "best of the year" list, but when I do, Fake Blood will be on it. And if I were to make a "best songs of the year" list, "Silent Partner", "Remorse Code", "Not What I Came For", "No Waves" and "Remorse Code" would all be on it.
ALSO - Seth included a personalized note with all pre-order vinyl copies, and I thought that was just about the coolest thing ever.
that is awesome. im bummed i got into him/them after the release date. I just listened on Spotify, and I definitely think it'll be up there for me.
i was just poking around his website and remembered that awhile ago I bought the split 7" he has with Dr. Dog. I guess I didn't realize what it was at the time (I bought it along wiht whatever else I could carry out of Ear-X-Tacy's last day open).
A:Dr. Dog performs Don't Stop Loving Me
B: Floating Action performs The Breeze
Pretty cool!

crazy how polarizing that yellow/green has been and nice call on the El-p. My girlfriend still hasnt opened the super preorder package because she hates the album so much. I guess its going on ebay unless anyone wants it. Killer Mike was a little hit or miss for me but not for lack of production. I couldnt get into the Torche at all but I'm really digging the Jimmy Cliff. He just sticks to his guns and busts out catchy pop reggae like no one else.
Still lots left I want to hear, but these are my favorites of what I have heard of 2012 releases.
Mark Lanegan - Blues Funeral
Converge - All We Love We Leave Behind
Bob Dylan - Tempest
Spiritualized - Sweet Heart Sweet Light

Bob Dylan Tempest
Tom Waits Bad As Me
Dr John Locked Down
Neil Young & CH Psychedelic Pill
These youngsters are good too!
JD McPherson Signs & Signifiers
Divine Fits A Thing Called The Divine Fits
Nikki Lane Walk Of Shame
As I write , I realize all 3 were to have performed at the "postponed" Soundland Festival w/ MMJ headlining.
I went down to Nashville that weekend anyway to visit my friend Emily - she was super-pissed as it was to have been her first MMJ show. We went to the Mercy Lounge to see JD and were pleasantly surprised when Nikki showed up as the opener.Great show .
Talked w/ Nikki after, what a sweetheart  !
Another bonus- We met Raul Malo(what avoice ), of the re-united Mavericks, hanging out w/ fellow Mavs Eddie Perez & Paul Deakins.
Their new album, In Time, is good too.
Ive got catching up to do, but..
1. Gary Clark Jr - Blak & Blu
2. Menomena - Moms
3. Dr. Dog - Be The Void
Dr. Dog is surmountable, but I dont see anything jumping Menomena or Gary Clark Jr. I actually didnt think any album would surpass Menomena, but that GCJr just keeps growing on me. Some seem to rip on it because of the diversity, but I almost give him more credit and continue to play the album so much because of how much it switches song to song. Ive actually had 1 of the bonus tracks songs in my head lately too. GCJr is making a name for himself quick, he jammed with the Stones last weekend - no big deal!

It's strange, I haven't seen the Menomena on any 'best of' year end lists yet, not even mentioned. I agree, it's top 5 for me for sure. As much as I enjoyed Dirty Projectors, Father John Misty and Grizzly Bear, all albums in the top 20 of the lists I've seen, I liked Moms more. There is personal preference of course, but I am still surprised it isn't getting any love. It's original, technically great, creative, and hell it's catchy. Oh well...

When I saw Menomena in Philly a couple months back, it was mostly empty so I think they really need more word of mouth. I still love that album, I just think enough people havent heard it. At this point, Moms and Blak&Blu are really 1A and 1B
I've not really made a best of 2012 list, but Menomena - Moms will be in the top 5 for sure!
Not sure about the rest of my best of list yet. Mark Lanegan, Heartless Bastards, Cloud Nothings, Father John Misty and Breton will certainly be somewhere on my list. I didn't know Gary Clark Jr yet, but what I heard on Youtube sounds very promising!

12 Shovels and Rope O Be Joyful
Cool to see mention of Shovels and Rope. Just discovered them and am really enjoying the album. Reminds me of an even more rootsy version of Honeyhoney. By having this on your list, I'll spare you my derision regarding the Andrew Bird pick immediately following it.
Shovels and Rope are opening for Lucero here in DC in March. I don't know if they are doing a whole tour with them or not.
Regarding New Multitudes not making it on more lists, the show made it on my top show list, but I haven't gone back to the album enough to warrant putting it on my top albums list.
That Andrew Bird album is one of his best ever Mr. Whippy!!! You probably haven't even listened to it!
Seriously, Lusitania is one of my top 10 songs of the year.
Andrew Bird & Annie Clark - Lusitania (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OecM1x7iVPU#)
Another favorite track of 2012
Sun Kil Moon - Richard Callopy

The most frustrating thing about top-10 lists is that you don't know what else the reviewer has heard/seen/been. If something's not on the list, is it because they haven't heard it, or don't like it?
As a crusade against a personal pet peeve then: here is everything else I listened to regularly and considered from my list. For example, after a review of others lists, it seems I need to check out Father John Misty, Menomena, and Tame Impala.
Dr John Locked Down
Lee Bains III and the Glory Fires There Is A Bomb In Gilead

Still need to check out: Japandroids and The xx
I realized that: Tennis - Young & Old and Lotus Plaza - Spooky Action At A Distance, were in 2012, both of these would either be on the list or at least honorable mention.
I did checkout Japandroids, meh, a little too pop/punk for me I think, but maybe I'll do a bit more research. And I would add Sharon Van Etten's Tramp to my need to check out list, I like her a lot but have only heard a track or two off Tramp.

as your whistlerbation companion and someone who has listened to the album lots, I much prefer the album. It's great Sun morning cooking in the kitchen music. The dude is talented, I just don't care for the live show.

I still have night terrors about all of that whistlesterbation. I'll wake up and think it's over and dammit if I don't have an encore dream about it. It never ends. Maybe after some more sessions with my therapist I will be able to try a little "Sun morning cooking in the kitchen" sesh. But it won't happen until Jan. 6th at the very earliest.

albums I listened to once or twice on spotify and thought sounded good, but need more listens - Richard Hawley, Menomena, JD Mcpherson, Japandroids, Andrew Bird, Dr. John, Grizzly Bear - I'm sure I'm forgetting a few.
biggest disappointment - The Avett Brothers - Carpenter

I've seen him live 2-3 times now and I must say I agree. I love his albums. Love 'em. Like you said, "Sunday morning cooking" music at its finest. But the live show usually bores me...it's "good" in the sense that it's pretty music and he's really talented, but I usually end up nodding off...I REALLY want to see him play with a live band, just for a change. I love his Bowl of Fire era stuff just as much as his new stuff, in a completely different way. Everyone who's not a fan of his current stuff should check out The Swimming Hour and earlier stuff...give it a chance
I'm sure I bought at least 100 new albums this year but these were among my favorites:
Jason Isbell - Live From Alabama
Kathleen Edwards - Voyager
Bruce Springsteen - Wrecking Ball
Sons Of Bill - Sirens
Bob Dylan - Tempest
New Multitudes
Gary Clark Jr. - Blak and Blu
John Hiatt - Mystic Pinball
Tedeschi Trucks Band - Everybody's Talking
Lucero - Women & Work
Alejandro Escovedo - Big Station
And a few that aren't really "new" but came out this year and for me were as good as it gets
Frank Turner - Last Minutes & Lost Evenings
Rodriguez - Searching For Sugarman
Grateful Dead - Live At Winterland 1971
Quote from: bbill on Dec 06, 2012, 11:17 AM
This is probably going to be it for me for the year:
Quantic & Alice Russell – Look Around the Corner
Father John Misty – Fear Fun
Christian Loeffler – A Forest
Six Organs of Admittance – Ascent
Menahan Street Band – The Crossing
A.C. Newman - Shut Down the Streets
Tame Impala - Lonerism
Flying Lotus - Until The Quiet Comes
Mark Lanegan – Blues Funeral
Calexico – Algiers
Yep, I'm sticking with those, but here are some others that I really liked:
Voices from the Lake - S/T
High on Fire - De Vermis Mysteriis
Sugarman 3 - What The World Needs Now
Bowerbirds - The Clearing
Ricardo Villalobos - Dependent and Happy
John Talabot - fIN
Neil Young & Crazy Horse - Psychedelic Pill
The Walkmen - Heaven
Lambchop - Mr. M
Quakers - S/T
Quote from: headhunter on Dec 21, 2012, 10:39 AM
Alejandro Escovedo - Big Station
Thanks, Jeff, for reminding me that I need to check out Alejandro's new album. This one seems to have flown under the radar, given that his last couple, particularly Real Animal, seemed to get a fair amount of press.
Here's one record that was on my best of the year list until a mediocre live show killed it for me:
Japandroids - Celebration Rock

I will admit, I liked him live a lot better when it was just him and Dosh. I wish everyone could see the DVD that came with the new album when he performs in a living room with just him and one other person. His brilliance really comes alive in that setting IMO.
Good call Jeff on the new Kathleen Edwards. I forgot about that one. Great album.
For The Record (live) — Kathleen Edwards (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QIvTCCEtjFs#ws)
Neil Young & Crazy Horse - Psychedelic Pill
Beachwood Sparks - The Tarnished Gold
Neil Young & Crazy Horse - Americana
Lee Ranaldo - Between The Times & The Tides
Dinosaur Jr - I Bet On Sky
Hacienda - Shakedown
New Multitudes - New Multitudes
I didn't think anything would get close to Beachwood Sparks for most of the year. Its such a great great record. A perfect cross of The Flying Burrito Brothers mixed into 70's Beach Boys. Became pretty obsessed with it actually.
But Psychedelic Pill is the record I've been waiting for Crazy Horse to release for 20 years. An album where its all about the guitar solo and taking it to the limit. Probably goes to the top of the list for Ramada Inn alone. Got to be the best song Neil's written in a decade. And if Americana was just a toss off to get the Horse back up to full speed to be able make PP I reckon that's a pretty fucken great toss off...
I'll to check out many of the above mentioned albums.
I was a fan of:
Pinback - Information Retreived
Soundgarden - King Animal
New Multitudes
Alberta Cross - Songs of Patience
I don't sample nearly as much as most of the posters here but two albums from this year that are solid top to bottom and will stand the test of time are New Multitudes and Father Misty's Fear Fun in my opinion.
Thanks all of you for posting your favorites - I find MMJ fans have great taste  and this is a great place to go to get suggestions on new bands and albums to listen to.

Just saw this post. Naturally, I was going down this path even before I saw your advice.
Almost through New Multitudes and then on to Father John.
I'm one of the biggest White Stripes/Raconteurs/Dead Weather/Jack White et. al fans, but I found his solo album a bit of a disappointment. The overall tone didn't connect with me. Some of the songs came off better in concert though.
I'm very impressed with The Lumineers debut.
Cat Power's Sun is excellent.
The Who Live at Hull 1970 is almost as good as Live at Leeds.
Tame Impala
Menomena
Floating Action
Father John Misty
Dr. Dog
First Aid Kit
Heartless Bastards
Soundgarden
Hip-hop:
OC & Apollo Brown
Guilty Simpson & Apollo Brown
Aesop Rock

Sons Of Bill - Sirens
Thanks, Jeff, for inspiring me to check this record out after seeing it on your list. It's really great and I'm sure would crack my top of the year list after I spent more time with it.
I was also inspired to go back and revisit the Heartless Bastards record after seeing it on so many lists, and I really liked it. I don't know now why it didn't really grab me when I first heard it earlier this year.

Oh nice, you'll have to report back on what you think. There's no mistaking it as anything but a country album. Great voice, great songwriting.
I'm not familiar with Shovels and Rope, I'll have to look into them.
