Looking for good ideas on shelving to store my records, the $6 oversized Tupperware bins from Taget just ain't classy in the new home. If anyone knows of vinyl specific shelving relatively cheap that would help, I could also improvise but I'm not the handiest person ever
FOr a cheap option, the IKEA Expedit shelves are perfect. We have one 2x4 shelf but could really use another. The cubes are perfectly shaped for vinyl.
I use a bookcase with adjustable shelves.
I say Expedit or this:
Record bin from a single sheet of plywood! Supposedly holds 500-600 records!

Currently I have mine on a cheap ($30) shelf from Big Lots. Hoping to upgrade to the Expedit or this DIY shelf.
Hey, that bin design looks pretty cool, but I think I'd like shelves better for personal access. I don't have Expedits, but they look liked they'd work pretty well for ready-made.
Here's the monstrosity I built a little while ago (it's not like I'm extremely proud of it or anything):

Ridiculously overbuilt, using 2x12 lumber, but I know it's not going to collapse!
For anyone, like me, who lacks the skill to pull off what Crispy created, there's this... IKEA Expedit shelving unit for $40. I ordered one online (nearest store was 2 hours drive), so add $20 shipping, but my wife was in CT this weekend and picked one up, so I'm hoping to cancel the order before it ships. If I have two, all that empty space will have to be filled...

The two black boxes next to the Expedit shelves were the original home of 2/3 of my vinyl. Each one cost about $60 and were OK, but it meant the bulk of my collection was "hidden", so I forgot some of the goodies within.
Plus one for the Expedit! They are cheap and fit vinyl perfectly and they come in as large as this:

Aah, only one more year till they break ground on my local Ikea, no more 500 mile drives for cheap swedish modern:)
:embarrassed: i'm tellin' ya, man, the water is cold! :embarrassed:
Well, it's not like it's full...:)
Jonnyyac what are the dimensions of the 4 shelf unit in ur pic? (Is it 2x4 ft) Also approx how many records does it hold? Ideally I'd like to get the 8 shelf or 16 shelf just don't know if I'll have enough space for them in the room the rec plyr is in.

Product dimensions
Width: 31 1/8 "
Depth: 15 3/8 "
Height: 31 1/8 "
Max load/shelf: 29 lb

As to how many albums it holds, I'll have to count 'em when I get home tonight.
I like to leave some breathing room, but you can easily do 30 or so and you could probably squeeze up to 40 if necessary.
Another tip is the Ikea "Lack" end tables, which make great component racks (for like $10 a pop!) - seen in my photo, I shortened the legs, plugged them with wood and put spikes on them, and they compete with very expensive systems for esoteric audiophile qualities like vibration isolatiing. Lots of write-ups on the web about "Ikea Lack Hifi racks". It's a bit overkill, but that's the fun part!
Honestly, I've got 50+ in each of the top two sections, with about 1/3 of them gatefold. The remainder are in the third section, and the 10" and 7" taking little space in the fourth.
Does anyone have any 7"-specific shelving? Or do you all just put them at the end of your record collection?

This was kinda cool, if you got money to burn. You can buy the 45 case, which holds thirty 7" discs, filled with any 5 of a selection of 7" discs from Third Man, for $60. Its the only way to justify the case, which is $45 by itself. I went with these five:
First Aid Kit - Universal Soldier
Jeff The Brotherhood - Whatever I Want
John (C. Reilly) & Tom - Gonna Lay Down My Old Guitar
Becky & John (C. Reilly) - I'll Be There If You Ever Want
Brittany Howard & Ruby Amanfu - I Wonder

I can't decide if I should go the Crispy route and build a shelf, or just buy that ikea thing. my current set up has all my records on a really shitty "hallway table" or whatever you call it. its really long, and with no support in the middle it looks like its gonna break if I put anymore weight on it.

The first question I'd ask is how handy are you?

And do you have a miter saw, or a friend who has one, and a shitload of tools, or are willing to buy them?
Here's (http://officialperiodic.blogspot.com/2011/02/diy-simple-record-shelves-plans.html) where I got the basic design.
I can build it, I've built similar things. I just don't know if I care enough to start another project
