Shit, did they sneak in a few records when I wasn't paying attention?

Could someone with more of a musical background please explain what 'not using demos' means? Thanks.
Oh and i'm officially putting my vote in for an album that has the honest and genuine, heartfelt feel of The Tennessee Fire and At Dawn, driven by the kind of raw energy and musicianship of It Still Moves with at times spacey soundscapes in the same vein as Z, all polished and performed to perfection as with Evil Urges and Circuital. Take all this, and put a little bit of a dark twist on it.
Thanks in advance, guys.

Presumably, Jim will just grab a guitar and play the guys a song or an idea he's come up with, and the band can fill it out from there, bouncing ideas off each other to maximize the creative collaborative process. Jim has recorded demos in the past, ones that are pretty polished and have most of the parts laid out in their entirety, not leaving much room for inter-band creativity. If I recall correctly, I think Jim stopped doing demos somewhere during the recording Circuital.
Also, I am so damn excited that they're recording again. There is no better feeling than that of anticipation of new music from your favorite band.
Hoping Jim can lay some lyrics across Funky Improv Jam from PC1 - that shit was tasty

Exactly! It's pretty interesting, collected some quotes about it:
Quote"For Z and Evil Urges we did three or so weeks of the five of us workin' on stuff. For this record we skipped all of that completely and we just went right in the studio with Tucker Martine and our friend, Kevin Ratterman who's an engineer and producer in Louisville. So it was the seven of us and we just started working kind of from the demos and rough ideas and recording everything as we were sorting through the parts."
- Carl
Quote
"We just set up shop without really knowing what it was going to be or what we were going to get. It ended up being really a good thing. Without having the heavy, weighted expectations on it, it ended up allowing us to be free and enjoy the moment and have fun and hang in the studio together trying to get takes because we had not even rehearsed any songs yet. It was super-rough demos that we were working off of. I think it put us all in a good head space."
- Bo
Quote"It took us a little while to get used to it, 'cause you're like, "I don't know what's going on!" Even if it's literally the first time we've all played it together, everyone's analyzing it – this is good, this is bad, you know, the whole thing. But it's kinda cool because you're already in the process of trying to make it realized. Some people say don't ever make a demo of a song that's too fleshed out – because you'll fall in love with that demo. You'll put a lot of the song's original spiritual intent – too much of it – into it, so by the time you make the real recording, you've wasted a lot of that early energy. It's already gone on this demo somewhere.
This time, I tried to make really loose demos, and it's been a fun way of trying to work them out. I'd always tried to make fairly explained demos, so they knew what I was talking about. A lot of songs are so simple, but there's this other thing going on on top of it. If it's not there I'm just like, "Well, it's just a C chord over and over and over again... You're gonna love it, it's going to be great." But you don't really know until the thing is on top of it."

NorCal is correct.
So excited
I haven't been following the info...is the recording location somewhat of a secret?
I'm throwing this out there - start saving now for the special vinyl package. I'll plug smarty pig as a great way to pre pay for shit. $10/mo from now til release should cover me
Anybody have an estimation of when it's going to be released?
Right in time for them to be a headliner at bonnaroo !
 :drum:
are they recording near Stinson Beach? or are they down in Malibu?
i think they are near SF
about three weeks to go and they should have it wrapped up on their end anyway
This article just made me put Exploding on repeat.
Hopefully they can mix T5 while recording the new album.
Following the recording of this album on Instagram has been such a tease! My hopes are sky high. Really hoping the album takes on the vibe of their surroundings -- looks to be somewhere in northern California. Anyone know where? There was a shot of a barn posted today by Tucker Martine that looked strikingly similar to the one on Neil's ranch where the Stray Gators recorded. Obviously a lot of barns look the same, but the fact that this album is being recorded even CLOSE to where Harvest was born makes me very excited.
I'm guessing they'll get to work mixing it right away if this thing is going to be out May-ish 2014.
most definitely Stinson Beach just north of SF
I think I know where I wanna take my next vacation -- goddamn! Looks beautiful.
Wonder when we'll get a title and the first bit of press? Jan-Feb?

Maybe we should bet on the amount of tracks and run time. I'm hoping it reaches 45 minutes.
Seems they might be done...

I hope they put out info soon on if they will be offering a deluxe version with lots of extras. I pre-ordered Circuital in the deluxe package back in early 2011, and I'm glad I did.
Hopefully more T5 tracks with the deluxe box lol
I AM SO FUCKING READY FOR THIS NEW ALBUM
Let another wave of MMJMM consume me!
(My Morning Jacket Mania Madness)
If the new song from the Dallas Buyer soundtrack is an indication on how the new album will sound like I am very much intrigued
Is it even possible that they are already done recording? That seems fast! Or is that just the way it is and its the production post-recording that takes so much time?
I saw that Jim was back in Louisville recently sitting in with Houndmouth, so it certainly seems like they aren't in california anymore.
interesting. yep, totally banking on a bonnaroo headline slot.
Anybody have any updates on this....or should I check back after OBH?
They are back in the studio according to all their Instagram posts.
How long did Circuital take to finish once they hit the studio? A few months?
RANDOM HOPE FOR NEW ALBUM:
That it includes one groove-laden 10+ minute track.

May? June? July?
im curious how this album will be announced to us. i liked how they did the weekly songs from t5 that lead to circuital and then the whole pre-order shebang for the album.
would be pretty cool if they did some creative marketing like daft punk and arcade fire did for their new albums last year.
either way. i'm fiending.

the greedy side of me is hoping for a Beyoncé style release
Well, they seem to always come up with something fun and interesting. I find myself thinking about how they determine their song line-up on their albums once they are done recording and are putting it together.
I'm just so happy, and I believe that we will be hearing news in the next month or 2. And, most likely they will be playing new stuff in Meheekoe (Mexico)
Looking forward to lots of chatter with all you righteous roll call peeps when they announce their record, tour, anything else..........
It's pretty crazy that the band is seemingly going from the studio right to Mexico, with barely a day off in between. OBH is going to be SO unique and awesome for that reason. They are going to be in a new vibe entirely.
Also, this recording process has resulted in some amazingly picturesque photos. I get the vibe that this album is going to have some fucking beautiful artwork.
I'm on edge waiting for any details about the album.

I am as well!!! They're being so quiet right now it's killing me!
I saw J Roddy Walston and the Business in Albany tonight and was chatting with the band after their set.... MMJ got brought up....and I was told they were hanging out with Jim a couple months ago in Louisville and he played a couple of their new songs over a "six hour hang out, listen to music, and drink whiskey session", and they sounded absolutely pretty mind blowing. No more details were given, but I'll take it I guess....
That is the coolest thing I've ever fucking heard. Of COURSE J Roddy would get a whiskey-soaked MMJ preview session.
CANNOT WAIT
Drinkin whiskey and listening to new MMJ songs.....my idea of heaven.......

Think you guys will get to hear a new song on the final set? If not, I'd expect to hear some sort of news from the new album soon enough.
Just got knocked out of the poker tourney. Both Bo and Carl played and had $150 bounties on both of them. I sat next to Bo. He got barraged with questions. My question was any new songs tomorrow night. He said no b/c they don't really know them yet plus they aren't sure what will actually make the album. He said they recorded about 18 songs so far and will probably record a few more.
Very fun experience. Bo def knows what he is doing at the poker table but he did get knocked out kind of early.
6 hour jams, 18 songs.... Sounds like a double LP, I'll take that!
If they aren't done recording we are most likely looking at summer/fall release is my guess
