When these are available.... to listen in order night 1 to 3?  Or skip around to various highlights?  I think I'll listen to Dondante, Picture of You, various covers with Weir and then go back in order.

This is starting to get a little absurd.  Phish posts audio from 95% of their shows within an hour of the band leaving the stage.  It's hard to believe that it takes a full month for MMJ to do the same thing.

Obviously, we'll get them.  Another day or two is not a big deal.  But it's never good to over promise and under deliver.  I'm debating about being a downer here....expectations have been set already (twice) for these and in the past for some other Roll Call related goods/services when  snafus occurred.  Then again good things come to those who wait, and I'd rather have whatever kinks ironed out before turning up the volume and enjoying these shows.

For me, it's not the time it's taking itself, but the fact that twice, they have told us it would be available on a certain day only to have it not happen. Not a huge deal, but if you aren't sure of your ability to get something out by a certain date, probably best not to mention a date at all.

Actually, you are dead wrong as that recording sounds great.  Also, for the record every LivePhish release is essentially live album quality and it takes them 30 minutes to mix it.  This one month shit is for the birds.

Post by: millerjustin on Feb 27, 2014, 10:14 AM
I'm guessing that both licensure and editing issues are creating the delay.  They need to not only clear licenses for covers, but also live performance issues with Bobby and Wayne.  I'm sure everyone's cool, but the damn lawyers, ya know?

Also, I'm curious whether and how they'll incorporate the 10 minute banana nonsense.  It was sorta fun to be there (not spontaneous and somewhat forced), but not sure how it would correlate into a recording.

Phish has a totally different infrastructure than MMJ or The Black Crowes.

I didn't mean to imply that it was an inferior product but merely stating that they don't have a simultaneous engineer to mix in tandem like Phish.  That said, when a band delays a live upload to remix, your more likely to get a live album quality as opposed to a bootleg board matrix mix.

Actually, you are dead wrong as that recording sounds great.  Also, for the record every LivePhish release is essentially live album quality and it takes them 30 minutes to mix it.  This one month shit is for the birds.
Title: Re: OBH Downloads
Post by: dharwin on Feb 27, 2014, 12:17 PM
Point taken.  Phish clearly sets the benchmark for live show downloads as they basically started the service back in 2003.  I don't expect MMJ to live up to that...I guess ultimately I am just jonesin' for the tunes.
Title: Re: OBH Downloads

When TOOGANS talks, people should listen.  Also, patience is a virtue.  I'm anxious for these recordings, but refuse to ruin my experience getting worked up about it.  I'd rather Ryan et al take the time to release a great final mix then rush something out.

To be clear.  What is being delivered in 30 minutes is likely a sbd/aud mix.  There is no way a two + hour show can be remixed and rendered in 30 minutes, Unless someone is mixing in tandem from a truck or split.  30 min is about the minimum about of time to do indexing and export only.

MMJ has a one man operation at the moment in terms of FOH and archival post releases.  Things will speed up as our operation and the demand for live releases grow.

Again, not that mad about the overall time it took in a vaccuum. They are just getting started on this live download game, and considering how long we went without ANY sort of releases like this earlier in the band's career, I'll take what I can get in however long it takes them to make it happen.

It's just a LITTLE frustrating to be told the release date and then have it change, not once, but twice. If it takes them a month, so be it, but if you don't have the resources to meet a self-imposed target date, don't state the target date.

actually this part is essentially false.  You don't need lawyers, you don't need to clear licenses or anything of that nature.  Phish is a band that plays tons of covers every night, often new ones not previously played, and the live recordings are available immediately.  It's my understanding that a minimal royalty is paid (I'm seriously talking cents per song per download). You pay this to whoever holds the publishing rights to a song...not the original artist.  And no permission or license is required.

Additionally, no way Bobby or Wayne are causing the delay.   There really is no logical reason why these aren't available yet.

that said, I totally agree with Fully on this one.  Y'all need to chill and simmah down nah!

Let's find more ways to complain about a GIFT.
A gift? Hardly when that was listed as something I paid $1400+ for.

I certainly hope free downloads weren't a significant factor in your decision to drop $1400 for OBH.

You know there was a time when you paid to go to shows and the options for free downloads weren't even an option. I'm sure no one ever opted out of the show because they didn't get a free LP of the recording.

The reason this forum is so shitty now is because this is where everyone comes to bitch about matters related to MMJ, rather than be obsessive, weird little fan boys. Once upon a time this place was nothing but obsessive fans (and sticky).

MMJ has a one man operation at the moment in terms of FOH and archival post releases.  Things will speed up as our operation and the demand for live releases grow.

Release the Terminal 5 shows, and we will sure as hell show you some demand for live releases.

Yac coming thru again as usual.  He's the man.

I had that issue once when I downloaded a show and it went to a place on my computer that I couldn't find.  I clicked on "stash" and and then found a file and got it to work.  I'm not a computer specialist and was frustrated.

I appreciate your opinion, however it is totally subjective.  Background means the vocals sit behind the lead vocalist just audible but knot too out front. I urge you to drop the sarcasm. The degree of time it takes to mix 60 plus songs is a very lengthy process.

My wife and I walked out to the sound check on Sunday and it was a surreal moment... definitely one of the strongest lasting memories of the week, and there were plenty!

The rest of my work day was just as strong and powerful with the rest of the set... remodeling an old echoing apartment by yourself with the show blasting off the hallowed room walls was the trigger. Dare I say, great day!

I can never do top lists of songs or shows... one thing I know, that third show will forever be a special night to us, and there are so many reasons that I can't even think of them all at once.

Patrick (Blackhawks fan, sweet beard)

Does anybody know the tune that plays when the band comes out on stage?  I know they've been using it for years, but every time I hear it I get goosebumps like I'm back at a show.

it used to be Bird's Lament by Moondog.

Hopefully others in the same boat as myself that received two sets of codes will share appropriately.

I'm glad he got the codes. Now he doesn't have to support the 1% that is MMJ and can donate to charity.

I think night 3 might be my least favorite. That set 1 run of O is the One, Strangulation, Run Thru (end), and Dondante is just fantastic, but can't bring it up to the awesomeness of night 2 in general, and I think night 1's first set run of Heartbreakin' Man through Steam Engine is just as good, plus the Bob Weir run is great.  If I had to rank right now, I would say:

2
1
3

But I'm still acquainting myself and reserve the right to change my mind.

Nobody has mentioned this: Jim's voice is not at his best. Don't get me wrong, the shows are enjoyable to listen too, but his voice isn't what it usually is. Maybe he had a cold or something. I'm still enjoying all The Grateful Jacket songs and the rarities plus Carried Away.

You can hear some sniffling here and there throughout the recordings.  Doesn't bother me in the least.

I've picked out Slow Slow Tune as one of my favorites of the entire series.  I've have so much more respect for this song now that I've seen it live.  Initially, on Circuital, it was a skip-able track for me.

O and strangulation are phenomenal, Dondante too.  I feel ripped off every time I hear that stupid outro Run Thru.  Such a great song to cut short.  I want my money back.

Post by: Fully on Mar 07, 2014, 09:06 PM
The strained voice might have something to do with the abbreviated Run Thru. He also makes goofy noises to cover up that his voice isn't in peak condition. The only recording of SST that I like is an acoustic one from a radio appearance somewhere in Europe back at the end of the Corcuital your. It's not my favorite live, but I can appreciate it more after hearing that version.

I think his voice was fantastic, compare Red rocks Rocket man to OBH rocket man and you can obviously hear Jim hitting the notes he didn't at Red Rocks,  with that said i did notice his voiced became more and more strained every show (mine was gone the first night), but the cracking in his voice is beautiful because he still left it all out there.

Ok. I'm not really interested in arguing with you about this. We'll disagree. I don't know how many taped shows you've listened to of theirs, but one of the things I like about Jim's voice is that it isn't perfect. It's angelic at times and when it is, it's sublime, but there are plenty of times when his voice just can't quite do what he wants it to do. Yet he still puts his heart into it. That's one of the things I like about his voice. But now I've strayed off topic about OBH downloads.

One music writer referred to the occasional crack in his voice and said "I'll take passion over pitch any day", or something along those lines. I think they were referring to New Life on his solo release. I agree.

I do find the topic of the emotional connection this band creates incredibly fascinating, to be serious for a minute.  There are probably existing threads that cover that topic, huh?  Just reading about how people reacted to some of the songs during OBH makes me all the more in awe of this aspect of their music.

I'm completely with you. We listen regularly. And without a doubt, that Rider was so fun it is something that finds its way into the rotation quite often. I LOVE that my youngest's first concert was Jacket in Mexico and Bobby sits in.

Who do we need to write to see about Livedownloads.com releasing the ENTIRE week of music this year, not just MMJ's sets? I must say, the acts that are going this year I am a huge fan of, and I can't make the show because my wife will be in her last month of pregnancy, but I would savor the thought of listening to Dr. Dog, War on Drugs, and Band of Horses downloads, all the music in the actual order it occurred in, basically just recreate the weekend. It seems like livedownloads are going to be down there anyway, why the hell not? Not sure if we'd have to write Live Downloads, or each individual band's management, but I would love to see about the odds of making it happen!

I don't think it's about "livedownloads" being there or not. I don't believe it works that way. I may be wrong, but I thought Livedownloads was just a vehicle to supply live recordings from the bands themselves. Thus it would be up to each band (or more accurately each band's management) to decide if they would provide recordings. Do these other bands typically allow recording of their shows or do they typically release recordings? And I will gladly sign my name to any petition that supports your wishes. The more live recordings I can acquire, the better!!!!

I did some digging and I think you may be right, I was just thinking that if live downloads were able to talk to some of these bands management as a fully formed pitch to capture the audio of the entire OBH excursion, that might be more likely to come to fruition, and so live downloads might be the best starting point to facilitate that conversation. I plan to follow through on this, I'm kinda feeling out about the possibility, so will keep you all posted!

MMJ management is passing this question along to the other bands' management teams and will see what can happen.  Stay tuned...

Also, gluvmiller is right in his assessment of the role LiveDownloads plays.  All recordings are captured by sound-engineer god Ryan Pickett and his crew at the board during the show.  He fine tunes the recording and sends it to LiveDownloads for distribution.  It will be up to each individual band if they want to do something similar, but I am pleased that they are considering the idea and taking it to the other bands.

Dear Whistling Guy on OBH Recordings:
