Personally, was hoping for longer sets this go around as I am sure many of you were...
Really glad we opted for an extra day after seeing that last night though.
I love it! I like that the late nights aren't all DJ. We get actual real music 2 of the nights. Does seem a little short on Jacket, but I expect these times are not strictly held. Don't recall they we strict about end times this year. Really looking forward to a lot of collaborations including PHJB's late night gig. I love that we get full days on the beach before having to worry about getting to the shows. Gonna be tough on my little kids, but I just might put them to bed early and go wake them for Jacket. There is NO WAY my son Elvis is gonna miss Jim James!!!
I couldn't imagine it being any better myself......and only 106 mas dias :drum:
Super Bowl Sunday is going to be insane. Talk about pacing yourself.
Can anyone that went last year provide some insight in to how long they actually played vs how long they were scheduled to play?

They did stay close to the times; however, they did have 2.5 hours scheduled every night as opposed to 2,2,2.5 this year. Not that I'm complaining. It's going to be amazing!

Oh don't you worry, I'm am not bummed. I am quite thrilled. I was just curious.
I think it's weak they're only playing for two hours on two of the nights. Don't get me wrong, it will be incredible and I went last year. However, folks are ponying up major cash/debt and they/we deserve a substantial set each night.
Not sure what the band is thinking here. On the bright side, I do much prefer the supporting acts this year.

SOOO fucking weak man, they should just be playing from the second you check in to the second you check out. What could they possibly be thinking?
Be happy you're able to go, there is not one possible thing to complain about here

i was more addressing Derek's crying emoji there. Honestly though people (not werljam), have some perspective before complaining about set times. almost 7 hours of Jacket plus several other great bands?! In a beautiful resort with swim up bars and palm trees in the middle of the winter? give me a break.
PS - this is coming from a dude who can't make it to OBH, so this could all be colored by my bitterness. :)

It's not really necessary to jump down the guy's throat. I don't think he expects 24 hour sets. They played 2.5 hour sets last year and maybe that's the expectation.

I'm sorry, but it does come off as a bit weak to whine about an extra half hour. How about being thankful you are going to be in paradise for 4 nights of great fucking music instead of finding something negative to dwell on. Hear that? It's me playing the world's smallest violin...

......and I was really just joking. They could play for 1-1/2 hours each night and I would still go. I consider myself fortunate for being able to go last year, and fortunate that my wife was willing to hop on board for OBH2. She has warned me that she gets to choose our next vacation. Now I just have to make her think that OBH3 is her idea
I think it's completely fair to express criticism about an event that (per couple) we are paying about $3,000 for (plus airfare, transportation, and tips). Unravelled's post was pretty benign, anyway, not really dwelling on it ("on the bright side..."). So let's maybe cut him some slack.
I won't go as far as to call their decision weak, but i do feel some level of disappointment with it. While i still enjoy hearing songs like Wordless Chorus, Off the Record, etc, it's those rare ones that get sprinkled in that keep me coming back so frequently. To me, a shorter setlist means less of a chance that we will get rarities and more of a chance that we will get a pretty standard setlist. Let's also consider the fact that there is a new record just around the corner, so compared to last year there may be even more material to use with less time to work with.
Is this a petty thing to worry about? First world problems? Most definitely. But the fact remains, for fans that have been to many, many shows (the kind of people who would be willing to shell out tons of cash for something like this), that extra hour could have been the difference between hearing a song you've been waiting 5 to 10 years for, and not. However, here's something they could be doing that would make me totally eat my words:
Recognizing the fact that a huge percentage of people that went last year will be returning this year, and given the fact that this may be a huge turning point in their musical careers, they decide to forgo a large chunk of the "usual suspect" songs and instead play their new album from front to back on one night while on the other nights pushing out nothing but the lesser played but still prominent classics like War Begun, Run Thru, Honest Man, etc.. amidst a fury of rarities and white whales (hopefully, if all else fails, chills) as One Big Thank You to the fans and our intensely loyal commitment to them.
I'm not asking for much
With all that said, my inevitable and upcoming 25th live experience of Golden in Mexico will almost certainly be my favorite. :bath: :bath: :bath:
I'm sorry if my post offended anyone. But let's be honest here, what world travelling MMJ fan wouldn't want them to play marathon sets each night? Will it be incredible...YES! Will I forget my minor dissappointment during my time there? Probably. But, for a band like MMJ who made their bones with 30+ song sets at Bonnaroo, why wouldn't they seek to do something similar in a setting in which they have complete control?
I also had the thought that new songs would be introduced and that they would stretch out a little this time around, not reduce the set times.
Just my two cents, again, it will be awesome but I do consider this to be an open forum where open, respectful discussion can take place.
No offense taken. Your opinion is just that and, as you said, anyone should be able to express theirs respectfully, which you did.
Me? I'll just be happy to not be in the Mid Atlantic at the end of January.
Olé!

Hell yeah! Avoiding snowmageddon last year was definitely some karmic timing.
I'm not going, so not sure why I'm even wading into this, but I wanted to add that when I saw the schedule, my first reaction was "weak that they are only playing 2 hours each night".

Shorter set list, and 30-40% bigger crowd. This sure makes me glad I went to OBH1. Would still go to this if logistics allowed.
Didn't go to OBH1, not going to OBH2 but am a big music/MMJ fan, so I'll give some of my views:
I would look for different things this year. They don't want to get trapped into a "They did it last 2 years" thing for next year.
They might do a surprise set in the middle of the day. Or maybe just Jim playing a few songs and seeing if people show up and just winging it.
I would absolutely expect a complete new album set. I'd also expect some deeper cuts in that 2nd set/part of that show.
Maybe a covers set late night, again, surprise set?
I wanted to go this year, the lineup is really appealing to me. Maybe next year...
Or maybe just Jim playing a few songs and seeing if people show up and just winging it.
I'm putting my bet on, yes, people would show up
I do hope you're right, though.
When I made a "big deal" over the relative shortness of both long sets and surprises last year I felt that it was my legitimate right to do so as a non-attendee because I was making it clear that it was just an opinion based on the facts laid out after OBH1 had concluded.
In this situation if I was going (which I'm not) I would be telling myself to ignore this schedule and assume there will be at least 2 hours more of MMJ music whether in the form of 3 extra sets or just 40 minutes more per show etc... There's really no reason not to do this as nobody has work to get to the next day and there's no urban curfew that has to be kept.
That being said, if I was an attendee and did not get those extra hours I would be PISDSED. Nay, SUPER PISSED. I made reference to Pearl Jam last time around and since they had 2 crazy shows in the last 72 hours I'll make reference here to them again: http://www.jambands.com/news/2014/10/20/pearl-jam-cover-the-who-with-rick-nielsen-deliver-complete-performance-of-yield-in-milwaukee/ (http://www.jambands.com/news/2014/10/20/pearl-jam-cover-the-who-with-rick-nielsen-deliver-complete-performance-of-yield-in-milwaukee/) . In 2 3 hour plus shows (in the middle of non-sexy parts of the country at that (no offense (I'm from there))) they played Yield and No Code in their entirety. Their fans were expecting X and they delivered X+Y.
I expect the boys to follow this model and blow the OBH2 crowd away with multiple bust-outs and surprises but if for whatever reason they don't then I can see more fuel being added to this thread's (very small) fire.
I'm not going this year, but the schedule is really weak. I don't like the idea that there are enough bands that they need a schedule. I don't like that the other bands have at least 1.5 hours. Thats too long. This is supposed to be MMJ fest, and MMJ is only playing about 1/5 of the music. And lets be honest, that resort isn't "paradise", as someone referred to it earlier. My opinions might change based on an surprises that happen and/or the set lists, but right now I'm not bummed about missing this year at all. I spent almost 3000$ last year when all was said and done, and that was for the cheapest room. Thats way too much money unless you walk out thinking you saw the best shows you've ever seen.

I guess I'm really lucky cause I LOVED this year and couldn't be more excited about this next year. Worth every penny! In fact this year will be even better because of all of the WONDERFUL friends I made that I will ge to see again as well as more added to the list that didn't make it to round one. Not that my opinion has the weight of some of yours because I haven't been around here as long, but I have certain expectations in changes in the set lists as these will really be consecutive shows from OBH1 to OBH2.

I'm giving it a 5% chance that you're in.
They gotta bring it after not playing a whole year. And no offense to the Biz Markie fans, if MMJ sets are kept to the schedule and that last show isn't a crazy long one (like past 'Roos or Red Rocks 2012), then I'll be a little disappointed. Sure, it's going to be awesome as it always is seeing MMJ in any venue. And the vacation aspect in a beautiful place is huge. But if there are no surprises like some suggested, then it might be hard to be stoked like I am for OBH2 if there is an OBH3 to book next summer.
Finally, in my opinion, 1.5 hours is too long for everyone except the War on Drugs because those guys are just awesome.
They will stick to the set times. I heard that one last year (right scosby?). Again, it will be awesome indeed but I think it's easier for those not going to say "quit your whining". Plopping down $3-4K in real terms, not in the abstract, will raise your expectations (sad, but true)
That said, you fine peeps will hear not another negative word from me! The resort is very nice. The food is great for the most part and there will not be a better concert setting to see the boys throw down. The temperature will be perfect, the wind will be blowin', the PHJB will be rockin', and there will be room to move, dance and rock out all the way to the rail. All while having enormous bars and grazing munchy tables just a couple hundred yards away in any direction. Like I said, I'm done with the bitchin, hopefully MMJ will add in their own accoustic set, but if not, it will STILL be one of the best times of my life.
Now, if we can only get Bobby Weir back on the beach....

I will never not want more MMJ, but I'll also always be grateful for every second of music I get.

So I'm all in right now at $2000 for flight, room, taxes, insurance and shuttle. Are there other costs I have not discovered yet?
Other than tips not really....
If your doing excursions or anything then there are charge for that. And make sure at check out you have the tax for the "points" u use, but for the most part you got it covered.
I'm coming from Canada and they've never been near here so this will actually be my first MMJ show. I'm going with my wife who's a casual fan of theirs and probably more familiar with Dr. Dog, Dawes and War on Drugs than MMJ really. She's coming more just for the escape from the snow drift and a get away from the kids for a few days. I'm a big fan of MMJ and am definitely stoked to be getting to see them finally but I'm almost just as excited for the WoD, Dr.Dog and Dawes sets so on the whole, I'm very pleased with the schedule.
Looking forward to it!

Exactly!
What if he simple explanation is Jim said "hey guys, 7.5 hours over 4 nights took it's toll on my voice last year. If you listen, you can hear it. Maybe we scale it back just a little. I don't want to deliver a bad night"
Sent from my underpants using Tapatalk
that certainly seems like a realistic explanation. however he did do Port Chester and the Wiltern three consecutive nights with no break and I do believe the sets or somewhere around 2 hours and 20 minutes every night. with that being said both of those shows came in the midst of a run so maybe his cords were a bit more used to the wear and tear at that point. either way as one of the people that voiced displeasure for the current schedule I'm already over it and looking forward to the experience 100%. and I do like the supporting bands a bit more this year, especially the war on drugs and the fact that we get an acoustic Band of Horses set.
For those of you that are lucky enough to be going to this, you need to be excited for Dr. Dog. They are one of the best live bands I've seen next to MMJ. I know most of you on here probably already know that, but if you don't, seriously start listening to them before January and get excited. Sing and dance as hard as you can during their set and I promise you will have a blast. Nothing better than the whole crowd getting into Jackie Wants a Black Eye or The Rabbit The Bat and The Reindeer.

I have been listening to War On Drugs, Lost in the Dream since it came out, over streaming services. I just bought the vinyl today. I loved it on Rhapsody, but on record, it is phenomenal. My guess live it is even a step up. You guys going to OBH are in for a treat, I bet.

Lost in the Dream is indeed impressive on vinyl. I'm going to wear mine out soon.
And, live, they are incredible. Make sure you position yourself where the sound is best.
