hot damn!
Who here has been to this fest before? Any thoughts, tips, feelings towards it?
I've never been but from what I've heard it's a pretty cool fest. I believe there is re-entry, so you can leave, grab some beer/food and then go back in.
I really hope that we can find out more than two weeks before the event which night they are playing.

On the website it says that they "might" sell single day tickets. Do you know if they have in years past?

Is that how little notice they give before announcing the schedule? If MMJ and Tame Impala play on the same day, that would be amazing.
From the Boston Calling website
When is the performance schedule released?
The performance schedule will be released a few weeks prior to the festival. If you want to be notified right away once the schedule is released, be sure to sign up for our mailing list. Artist lineup subject to change.
And from the ticket section:
General Admission
Boston Calling is a three day festival on City Hall Plaza in the heart of Boston. We offer three-day passes and weekend passes. Limited single day passes for Saturday and Sunday may become available at a later date.
I have to imagine, as long as it doesn't sell out, they'll offer up single day passes. As long as MMJ doesn't play Friday night, we should be all set.
TONS of single day passes will be for sale on craigslist as 3-day owners sell off what they don't want. Don't sweat it at all- I've followed tickets for this festival every time and never had a problem picking and choosing.

I went Sat last year. It's a finely tuned machine. There is literally like 10 minutes in between sets. You don't have to miss a note. My only compliant was that it got really crowded trying to get places in between the stages during breaks. But I'm an old man (not really) and have no patience for that any more. We did VIP last year. It's not really worth the money except the private bathrooms.
Last year, you could come and go. That was great. City Hall plaza is all brick and concrete, not really great for sitting and resting. So during a band that we didn't care for, we went out, had a few beers and a late lunch.

Based on how they do it, I would expect them to play Friday night. While technically a head liner, I would think they'll do Beck on Sat and have the "hometown" band the pixies finish out the weekend. Friday night is usually just 2 (maybe three, I forget) bands and is a cheaper ticket. But they will have one of the mid tier bands play Friday night too, so you might get another band you like.

I was hoping you'd chime in with some knowledge. That's helpful to know! This seems like a solid non-huge festival.
I was hoping they'd play on Saturday, it be better for me, but either way a single day ticket is in order for this one, I love the Pixies but without Kim Deal its a little hard to stomach. Beck=Blech!
if they are playing on the Friday it'll be easy to get in, the space is HUGE! I went last year the day DCFC & Decemberists headlined, was fun. The all concrete/cobblestone did a number on my back but such is life...

my general take is that it's only an "ehhh" festival. Obviously if we like the bands it'll be fine but anyone traveling should set expectations that it's nothing special in terms of setup, amenities, etc.
Well MMJ is definitely not playing Friday night, as they announced single day Friday tix for Beck.

MMJ playing Saturday
Do they sell Sat. only tix at some point? I have no interest in Sunday.
I fucking love that Run the Jewels is right next to Jason Isbell
Here is the new breakdown of the line-up...

And single day Sat. and Sunday tickets do go on sale Fri.
I think I just might make the trip up for this Saturday show.

Absolutely!
I'm probably going to train it up in the AM getting there by 11:00-12:00. I'll keep you posted once I work out the details.
Oh Im so at this show. Anyone been last yr? WHat time do the headliners play from and to? Im coming down from Maine.
well, of the 4 support acts I'd most like to see, 2 are on Friday and 2 on Sunday. Uggh. I'm still in for Saturday of course!
Headliners typically play 90 minutes. The setup is not ideal. If you want to jockey for a good spot, you'll miss the other stage completely.

Any idea what time the music would start on Saturday? I'm trying to decide if coming up Friday night would be better than getting to Boston around noon on Saturday.
Got my tickets for Sat.!!! Woo Hoo!!!
I'll be there with the Mrs. and kids - first Jacket show for the kids!
got my ticket for Saturday. Hoping the snow is all gone by then.
At this rate we may have to snowshoe to this show...Im just thinking Spring and Boston is Calling!
So, if there rumors are true for a spring/summer tour, does this festival wipe out any chance of them playing Boston? I remember hearing about how a band has to wait a specific amount of time before they can play near a city where they are playing a festival. Or did I make that up?
It's probably all we'll see in Boston if I were to guess.
Is this a situation where MMJ and Ben Harper will play at the same time? Cause that would be a bummer.
I doubt that they'd play against each other. Not sure if they even have multiple stages, can anyone verify that? Also I bet there is a strict curfew for this show being outdoors in the city.
I was hoping MMJ would be on the Gathering of the Vibes but they are not, too bad I'd have made the trip for that.
There are no overlapping sets at this festival. That's one of their selling points.
it's 2 stages at opposite ends of the festival area, with no overlapping sets. But, things get pretty crowded. If you want to be up front for MMJ, you'll have to get there early and stay put, so you'll probably be listening to Ben Harper more than watching.
If you don't care about being up close, you can definitely bounce back and forth between the 2 stages and see the entire day's lineup.
So I just picked up a Saturday for this. It'll be good to see you guys again.

Joey - let's triangulate for Saturday - also, you going to Jason Isbell at the Egg on Friday 5/22?

I had planned on going but am travelling to Boston that evening. It's a shame. I'll catch him next time.
And as for Saturday I'm game for anything. Might meet some old friends, might just hang out at a bar, might camp out on the rail. No idea yet. I'm staying close to the festival grounds so I'll be in the general area the whole time.

Really the only band (St. Vincent & Ben Harper aside) I've heard of is Run the Jewels, who is made up of Killer Mike and El-P. I don't think I've heard their music but they highly acclaimed.

Hey Joey - hope you are planning on sharing a beer or 2 with me on Saturday. Looking forward to seeing you at this one. I suspect me & Kyle and my cousin Mike will be up on the rail.

So I might be going solo..hard to convince any of my friends to fork over $100 for 90 min of mmj, but the need to see them live will be too much to resist I think I'll have to go

tell them to buy their tix the day before or day of. They will be $50. Also tell them it's worth $100 anyway.
tix are on stubhub for $40
Is anyone else a bit disappointed that they are not doing a standalone Boston (or anywhere remotely close) show?
I am, but if the rumors are true they'll be coming thru the northeast over the winter. Just gotta wait.
Anyone know how long this fest goes until? They are supposed to hit the stage at 9:20
I'm not familiar with anybody else besides Ben Harper on Saturday but I got the day off, looks like I'm flying solo, anybody rocking the vip section? If so have you been there before his close to the stage are you? Not sure if I wanna just get there round 7 for mmj only or rock out solo all day haha
till 11
1:40 ain't bad - perhaps a touch longer than the Hangout set - I'm expecting 15 songs

When is everyone getting to boston? I'll be arriving 8ish on friday night. Not going into the fest until saturday. Will probably be feeling a beer when I arrive.
Cool little interview with Patrick about his experiences in Boston

First Jacket show since Bangor, ME 2011. Loving The Waterfall and I can't wait.
Only will be there Saturday, which is kind of a bummer as I'd love to see Jason Isbell again and Pixies, but MMJ are who I want to see the most so it's okay.
We are getting to Boston between 12-1PM on Sat., checking into our B&B at the marina, grabbing lunch in the North End and then heading over to the festival later afternoon. Only really want to see St. Vincent, BH and MMJ.... Can't wait!
TOMORROW!!!
WHERE TO BEGIN!!!
I'm starting to get really excited. The boys are well rested so I'm expecting a high energy show.
So pumped. Just sent out a few tweets. Anyone with Boston Calling experience know how hard it is to get up front?
I just got back from tonights show and I gotta say I'm a little nervous about getting a good spot.

MMMMM I missed looking on the forum for Jacket setlists and new shows :) the week off with their families has absolutely helped the guys theyll play an enthusiastic show as always and itll be entertaining no matter what they play but today IS a Where To Begin day
It appears they aren't actually live streaming the sets, just broadcasting live from the venue?
Please let us know if someone figures it out
why on earth would i care where they are broadcasting from if they weren't broadcasting the music being played at the festival? unless of course they are doing artist interviews, maybe some show recaps, or a combination there of.... eh, whatever, i think we've all heard I'm Amazed, Circuital, and Magheetah/Gideon/OBH about a million times by now anyway and i'll just look at it as if i'm preserving the freshness of the new material. Back to cleaning out the garage
I hear you Stevie. I said the same thing.
haven't gotten a list yet, but here's a pic from a buddy at the show.

Memorial Day War Begun! Nice tip O' the hat...
Great show last night! The boys are were on point. All the new material translated really well live as expected. The War Begun jam was pretty epic. Not too much banter from Jim...he talked about feeling "the power of Boston Town" which I thought was funny since he said the same thing at the NYE show a few years back (I don't think I've ever heard anyone else call it Boston Town). Then right before Touch Me pt 2 he called the crowd Beauutiful several times, then eventually moved his sunglasses just off his eyes to get a "better" viewwhile calling the crowd beautiful a few more times. They started Lay Low a few minutes before 11 so I was pleasantly surprised they snuck in OBH after the strict 11 sound ordinance curfew.
All in all a great show. This was the only show I had scheduled for the tour dates out now - That will definitely have to change.

OOOO, did that play Lay Low?? Or did you mean Anytime?
FANTASTIC night. The boys sounded great and that old time energy and full solid sound is back and strong. They are big time now and had the crowd eating out of their hands. The Boston Calling Festival truly sucks in my opinion, not much of a festival. BUT, MMJ had a great setlist and sounded fantastic. Hung with Joey Rogo and many MMJ faithful back straight-away by the soundboard. Although the sound was really great back there, I missed being on the rail. Much too much work givin the huge crowd.
If this was a festival set, it's gonna be truly special when I next catch them for a full regular MMJ show at MPP. MMJ never sounded better.

Great festival set. Gorgeous night and the band sounded amazing. All the new songs came off so well live and a lot of the people around me were singing along to them as well.
