Who here has been to this fest before? Any thoughts, tips, feelings towards it?

CountSA

I've never been but from what I've heard it's a pretty cool fest.  I believe there is re-entry, so you can leave, grab some beer/food and then go back in.

I really hope that we can find out more than two weeks before the event which night they are playing.

On the website it says that they "might" sell single day tickets. Do you know if they have in years past?

Is that how little notice they give before announcing the schedule?  If MMJ and Tame Impala play on the same day, that would be amazing.

From the Boston Calling website

When is the performance schedule released?
The performance schedule will be released a few weeks prior to the festival. If you want to be notified right away once the schedule is released, be sure to sign up for our mailing list. Artist lineup subject to change.

And from the ticket section:

General Admission
Boston Calling is a three day festival on City Hall Plaza in the heart of Boston. We offer three-day passes and weekend passes.  Limited single day passes for Saturday and Sunday may become available at a later date.

I have to imagine, as long as it doesn't sell out, they'll offer up single day passes.  As long as MMJ doesn't play Friday night, we should be all set.

TONS of single day passes will be for sale on craigslist as 3-day owners sell off what they don't want.   Don't sweat it at all- I've followed tickets for this festival every time and never had a problem picking and choosing.

I went Sat last year. It's a finely tuned machine. There is literally like 10 minutes in between sets. You don't have to miss a note. My only compliant was that it got really crowded trying to get places in between the stages during breaks. But I'm an old man (not really) and have no patience for that any more. We did VIP last year. It's not really worth the money except the private bathrooms.

Last year, you could come and go. That was great. City Hall plaza is all brick and concrete, not really great for sitting and resting. So during a band that we didn't care for, we went out, had a few beers and a late lunch.

Based on how they do it, I would expect them to play Friday night. While technically a head liner, I would think they'll do Beck on Sat and have the "hometown" band the pixies finish out the weekend. Friday night is usually just 2 (maybe three, I forget) bands and is a cheaper ticket. But they will have one of the mid tier bands play Friday night too, so you might get another band you like.

I was hoping you'd chime in with some knowledge.  That's helpful to know!  This seems like a solid non-huge festival.

I was hoping they'd play on Saturday, it be better for me, but either way a single day ticket is in order for this one, I love the Pixies but without Kim Deal its a little hard to stomach.  Beck=Blech!

JerseyDan

if they are playing on the Friday it'll be easy to get in, the space is HUGE! I went last year the day DCFC & Decemberists headlined, was fun. The all concrete/cobblestone did a number on my back but such is life...

my general take is that it's only an "ehhh" festival.   Obviously if we like the bands it'll be fine but anyone traveling should set expectations that it's nothing special in terms of setup, amenities, etc.

CTdeadhead

Well MMJ is definitely not playing Friday night, as they announced single day Friday tix for Beck.

CountSA

MMJ playing Saturday

Jenfarr

Do they sell Sat. only tix at some point?  I have no interest in Sunday.

parkervb

I fucking love that Run the Jewels is right next to Jason Isbell
Don't you ever turn it off

Here is the new breakdown of the line-up...

And single day Sat. and Sunday tickets do go on sale Fri.
