The new record by A Place to Bury Strangers is a monster, so I'd add that to my list.
Also, if live albums count, the new Phosphorescent live album will definitely be one of the things I play the most this year.
New Matthew E. White is freaking excellent.
Dr. Dog and phossys live albums.
The new Father John Misty is fantastic. I see it being a major contender at the years end.
That Father John Misty album is so perfectly enjoyable all the way through. Going to be really hard to top for me
Yea you guys are both right. That FJM really is one of the prettiest albums I've heard, maybe ever. The guy is just an amazing songwriter
The Amazing - Picture You (just blown away by it)
Diamond Rugs - Cosmetics (maybe a stronger follow up to an awesome debut)
Phossy Live

When it came out, he did a special session on The Loft and I'd love to track that down, that's the first time I heard his cover of Heart Shaped Box. Anyone hear that?

Nice find!
Anyone heard Will Butler's debut, "Policy?" It's short with only 8 songs, but man it's fun. That album, Father John Misty, and the Phosphorescent liver have been my tops so far.
BTW, if you haven't seen the video for Will Butler's "Anna," you should check it out. Hilarious.
I only have 2 albums so far :embarrassed:
The Decemberists
The Districts
still need to get:
Hanni El Khatib

Modest Mouse
Will Butler (maybe)

Wow...thank you guys for introducing me to this. This is fucking fantastic. Wild.
It's insanely good. Between that and FJM, it's already a great year.
Much like his last album, I just don't get the hype. The production is definitely on point, but I just don't hear the lyrically sharp, amazing storyteller that everyone labels him as. Also, the greatest emcees of all time couldn't hold down an 80 minute album imo.
Good Kid Maad City was the best rap album to come along since The College Dropout. His new album isn't bad, but it's not as amazing as it's being hyped to be. The production is excellent though.

He has great storytelling. An example being from "Money Trees." One line is when he says, " I f'd Sherane and went to tell my bros/ then Usher Raymond Let It Burn came on." Burn was the popular song at the time period that Kendrick is referencing when he about 15 years old. Its second meaning is that when he hooked up with Sherane, the neighborhood whore, he likely caught an STD from her.
Yeah i dunno, Ras Kass has spit those type of double entendres for 20 yrs and nobody cares about him. I just hear an emcee that shows flashes but is inconsistent and average overall to me.

It's too early for me to claim TPAB stacks up against GKMC, but the high I'm on right now makes me think its better. musically, lyrics aside, its amazing. the jazz. the funk. its all there. King Kunta is lyrically my favorite song by him as well.
Also, For Free (Interlude) is my early submission for best song of 2015.
lyrically, King Kunta and The Night Josh Tillman Came To Our Apt. are the two early contenders for best songs of 2015. shit. both so good. I've been freaking out about both since they day they came out.
King Kunta is unreal...
I don't know how anyone could not get chills at the end of "Mortal Man" on the new Kendrick album. The way the music builds while he reads his caterpillar poem and calls out to Tupac? Goddamn.
This album deserves it's own thread. This is some deep shit. Very interested to see how this plays out live!
Yeah its insane. I just payed attention to Mortal Man for the first time and it definitely induced some insane chills
May not be everybody's cup of tea, but if you'd be willing to give some piano ballads with good songwriting a chance, Tobias Jesso Jr.'s "Goon" is a pretty good debut. Maybe should've shaved a couple songs, but I love it.
And yeah, Kendrick is the man. That album is downright vicious.
Goon has been in rotation for me the last few days, definitely digging it. Also
Wand- Golem
Buxton- Half A Native
Lucern Raze- Stockholm One
HOLY- Stabs
Listened to the Buxton album again tonight...definitely the most MMJish album I've heard this year.
Action Bronson - mr. Wonderful
Vetiver- Complete Strangers
Lower Dens- Escape From Evil
Ryley Walker- Primrose Green
Kendrick
Ryley Walker
Action
these 3 have been in my rotation for the past 2 weeks.

Haven't previously been a fan of Alabama Shakes, but I'm going to give the new one a try cause the reviews have made it sound like such a step forward.
I liked what I heard off that Moon Duo, Crispy. I want to take a deeper dive.
1. FJM
2. Alabama Shakes

John Andrews & the Yawns
Districts
Mondo Drag
Need to listen more to Torres, Mikal Cronin, Jacco Gardner, and Michael Rault.
Other Lives- Rituals
The new Mikal Cronin is really good! Some people were disappointed because it sticks pretty close to his last album's formula (after that one was so many miles ahead of his first record) but both are so fucking catchy and cool.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qVtAteilk8s (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qVtAteilk8s)

...Alabama Shakes hasn't done it for me yet, Modest Mouse and The Districts were both kinda dissapointing
Turnover's Peripheral Vision is probably my AOTY right now. A bit of Real Estate vibe. I've been obsessed with it for the past few weeks.
Alabama Shakes - Sound & Color is amazing!! The Waterfall wins for most highly anticipated. But the new Alabama Shakes is the Bomb.
And when did The New Basement tapes come out? I'll never get tired of that album for as long as I live.
I have a feeling I will soon be adding the new James Petralli to this list.

new Titus Andronicus is pretty great, although definitely not the place to start if you're just getting into them.
The Ryan Adams Live at Carnegie Hall set is fantastic. Part acoustic set, part comedy.
Future-DS2 goes hard
Don't feel like listing everything now, but since i haven't seen it listed here yet I just want to mention that the new JD McPherson is pretty awesome.
coming home by Leon Bridges - if u need some retro soul in your life - guy is rather amazing

This album hasn't even officially come out yet, but it's definitely one of my favorite this year. I can't wait to see these guys. If anyone saw their performance on Fallon a few weeks back, they know what im talking about

In no particular order:
Lord Huron
Jason Isbell
Florence + The Machine
Young Fathers
Alabama Shakes
Built to Spill
Jose Gonzalez
Sufjan Stevens
Courtney Barnett
Diamond Rugs
A lot of good ones so far with Foals (August) and Kurt Vile (September) on my radar for upcoming releases. And Puscifer's new one coming in October, which I'm hopeful will be great. But their previous stuff is so inconsistent...... some songs fantastic and a few unlistenable.
loving the new Kurt Vile!
Looking forward to the new Kurt Vile as well! Also, Futurebirds are dropping a new one 9/25 and I can't wait for that!

Paul Orwell- Blowing Your Mind Away
Attic Fowler- City Hall
The Butterscotch Cathedral- s/t

Ryan Adams - 1989
Good
Action Bronson - Mr. Wonderful
MMJ - Waterfall
Alabama Shakes - S&C
Wilco - Star Wars
Still needs more digesting:
So many. I've really fallen behind...
I agree about Ryan Adams' version of 1989. I've gotten to know Taylor Swift's music because of my wife, and I think she writes very good songs. I'm just not a fan of the pop music stylings of her recent albums. Ryan Adams version of 1989 is what I'm hoping to hear from Taylor Swift in the coming years - a more mature (less pop) version of the songs she writes.
Gotta give a vote for Futurebirds - Hotel Parties. That song Hard As You Like.... Seriously, so damn good.
The Waterfall of course.
Phospho Live
FJM
I like a couple off Tame Impala
Wilco - Star Wars
At the moment, my top albums of the year are looking something like this:
Cattle Decapitation - The Anthropocene Extinction
Mutoid Man - Bleeder
My Morning Jacket - The Waterfall

MMJ - The Waterfall

really liked Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats also, need to go back for more listens.
and I guess I need to give Father John Misty another go. I was disappointed the 2 times I listened to it months ago...Wilco too even though historically they are one of my favorite bands.

HA! I loved Fear Fun and played it a LOT. I was really looking forward to his next album and I just wasn't getting into it. Similarly I saw him like 2 years ago and really loved the show, and then when I saw him a 2nd time it was just so-so. I think he deserves a 3rd listen though so I will try to stay open minded. I've talked to several people who love it.
