Never seen Bruce live. I dig his early early stuff but have not listened to any albums post BITUSA.
Is his current sound and set lists worth it?
Eric, not sure if I'll be attending the show, but let me know if you will be in Albany.
The new updated River released today. 22 new songs. Sounds as good as the original release. I was fantasizing Bruce would enlist MMJ as his back up band. It comes with a built in replacement for Clarence. You know they could probably pull it off as well if not better than whoever the E street band is comprised of these days. Saw them twice in 1981 at the LA sports arena. Best shows ever until I saw MMJ. Sports Arena is the best arena venue I have ever seen. Rarely used, but all the greats 30 years ago played there. U2, Floyd, The Who, etc. A relatively small basketball arena.
This is so weird! I was sitting around last night thinking about icons I have yet to see in concert. Bruce topped the list. And now he announces a show down the street?!? I'M IN!!!
I assume I've GOTTA go GA floor for the full E-Street experience, but for those with lots of Boss experience, how hard are these tickets to come by? Is it a Taylor Swift-style, completely rigged 8-second sellout? Or should I be able to get a pair of floor seats no problem if I'm cool, calm and collected the moment they go on sale?
I have been to 5 shows. 2 in 81, 2 in 85, stadium shows, and one in 98, Staples. I don't think any of them had GA. Different kinda vibe back then, GA was generally punk shows.. Expect a very much older crowd, middle age range 50's. When I saw him at the LA Coliseum security was on your ass in a second if you stood anywhere that was not in front of your seat.

Hey now! You watch your mouth there sonny, don't be talking shit about the E St.Band!
Actually word is this tour will be River centric with a scaled down band. Just back to basics which would be right up my alley. Not sure if Steve will be there, but Nils, Roy,Gary, and Max will be, with Clarence's nephew Jake on sax, Charlie Giordano on Keys, and Suzy Tyrell on fiddle/guitar. Pretty much all the surviving members of E.St.
I'm eyeing some east coast shows but definitely want to do the two LA shows. Bruce has always loved that place and I've heard him say it was one of his two favorite venues. The other being the old Philly Spectrum. It's been on my bucket list forever to see him there so I'm gonna try and make it happen in March.
Btw, I'd love to see a Bruce/MMJ collaboration. Two of my all time faves together would be priceless! I wouldn't be surprised if Jim turned up at the YUM gig, especially after playing at the Springsteen Musicares Grammy benefit. Hell, I might just make the trip down for that just for the chance of that happening. My guess would be The Ghost Of Tom Joad. Fuck! I'd die a happy man if I ever saw that.
Seen Bruce a solid 35-40 times in my life (both in NJ/NYC and across the US). Let me say this, the shows in NJ/NYC top anywhere else in the country from both a set list standpoint as well as the energy. I say this about most bands however, they play some of their most magical shows in their home town. So if you can make it to MSG/Prudential/Wells Fargo... those would be the 3 stops to hit this tour.
As far as tickets go... they will sell out in a minute for the 3 venues I listed above and most likely will add additional dates to them even. For the rest of the country, most will sell out rather quickly.
The REAL question is, when/if he will play the warm up show/s in Asbury Park before tour kicks off. That is the ticket to get.
---> Just adding that the crowd will be in their mid to late 50s. You will see some of the craziest MILF dancing in your life. But for the most part, people sit in the uppers, only standing for the big hits. Not really sure if there will even be a GA...

GA floor is the way to go for Bruce. Like MMJ there's nothing like that energy down there. The thing is though he doesn't do a first come first served GA in the states because of people showing up days in advance and venue security put the kabosh on that tours ago.
What he does is set up a time usually between 1:00-4:30 where you show up to the venue, show your GA ticket and they give you a numbered wristband. Then at 4:30-5:00 they hold a drawing and whatever number is picked goes in first. He'll have a GA pit in front of the stage with a second GA behind that. Depending on how many people a venue's fire code allows into the pit (usually 350-500) those enter in order after the first number picked. Let's say they give out 1,000 wristbands and number 600 is picked. #600 goes in first then 601,602 etc, and if the allow 350 in,# 950 is the last person in the pit, and 951 would be the first person on the secondary rail.
Usually if I miss out on the pit, it's back to the bar for some eats, and drinks. Then come in around doors and find a nice spot by the board. Unless I'd be on the second rail, thenI'll wait it out in line. It can be a bit of a wait as they don't let GA's in until after soundcheck, but if you've waited for a MMJ early entry rail spot, it's not much different. Sometimes in arenas we've gotten let into the concourse area, and got to listen to soundcheck.
I'm sure the GA procedure will be the same this tour and once they post the details, I'l post them here.
Don't fret if you get shutout on GA though, a good lower is pretty damn fun too. Like any other show the closer the better, and the only thing not as fun is the way back. Depending on the city and venue he does get those peeps rocking too but try and get as close as you can if possible.
Hey now! You watch your mouth there sonny, don't be talking shit about the E St.Band!
As you are well aware, praising the virtues of MMJ as a cover band is no slam on The E Street Band. Like I said, best show ever until you know who. Just imagine if they were the back ups. The Sports Arena is a charm. Not a bad seat, unless you are behind the stage. I'm passing. Can't afford every must see shows these days, and it will likely be compared to 81 River tour to me. I'm bad like that.
A little Bruce Juice to get the blood flowing. I was fortunate to be at this show in 12, and then again a couple of nights later with the wonderful Penny Lane, and Headhunter.
One of the most fun openers I've seen in all the years I've been seeing Bruce.
Badlands from MSG.

Totally agree with North face as well. If you can make a MSG show, that's the tits! My next favorite though is Philly, and I'm Jersey through and through. Bruce in Philly is about as good as it gets for me.

I thought of you two when I read this Bruce tour news.
Ha, Thanks Adam. Hope I get to see you at a show - ANY show - before too long.
We saw Bruce for the first time last tour in Phoenix and he had a two section GA like ericm was describing above. It wasn't so much a pit in PHX more like the front half of the GA floor and the back half. We were in the back half and we didn't wait in line at all. We weren't too far back fro the second rail. The crowd had a lot of folks in their 50s, but as I recall it seemed more like an evenly spread 2 or 3 generations of show goers, similar to what you get at the Stones, Who, etc these days. It was not too crowded, everyone on the floor stood the entire show, sang along and people were way into it. It was a great vibe in the crowd, a solid rocking show and it really made me wish I had seen him in the early 80s or late 70s when he was surely even more full bore high energy. Planning on catching the Phoenix show this tour with a hardcore fan buddy of mine from Texas. If he focuses on The River, that will probably make a good setlist, I'm thinking.
That's true Shug but it depends on the venue. In recent tours some venues have gone to an almost 50/50 split on the ga floor sections but some still go the 1/3 - 2/3 route.
As far as the energy goes, yes those shows in the 70's and 80's were balls to the wall but he also had an intermission. Two sets anywhere from 1:45-2:00 hours each. Now it's one long set with an encore where they don't even leave the stage. I swear, these days he still has more energy than most of the crowd towards the end of the shows.
I'm not really sure what to expect from this tour as far as length of shows but I'd say a safe bet would be a minimum of 2:45, probably longer. I'll take that any day , especially if it's River centric!
It is now confirmed that the show will consist of a complete River performance, and then some classics. I can't stop listening to this River box-set, so this news is awesome to me.
Thanks for everyone's advice in regards to the pit situation! Fingers crossed for some luck from the ticket gods come Friday.

I wouldn't be surprised if Jim turned up at the YUM gig,
jim was at the yum for bruce's 2012 show, but only as a fan.
our group had dinner that evening, then headed for the arena. my buddy and i took a detour back to his car for some pre-show "festivities." we caught up with the others in the concourse, and they were going bat-shit crazy:
"oh my god, you just missed him!! he was right here, no more than 45 seconds ago!!"
while my buddy and i were out getting buzzed, they ran into jim buying a beer before he headed for his seat. had a quick chat and took pics (that's my sis with jim). i was so bummed, missed my chance at meeting one of my rock 'n roll heroes. probably the only time i've ever regretted getting high. :cheesy:

I remember you posting this and that's a great pic!
Now that Jim has performed at the Bruce Musicares Grammy thing and shared the stage with him,I'm thinking if he's in town he'll not only show up but won't be in a seat this time. I'm thinking back stage and on it at some point too! "Get that man a guitar"!
Just a feeling but Bruce does bring friends he's played with onstage when he hits their towns, not always but often. I've seen some pretty cool guests in encores over the years; Roger McGuinn, Elvis Costello, Bob Dylan, among others.
Here's hoping he invites Jim in L'Ville this tour.
WOO! Scored some GA tickets for the show in Toronto. Can't wait! February can't come soon enough. (Never thought I'd say that.)
I guess we won't hear about the exact pit policy until closer to the shows?

Nice job o.
I'd imagine the pit/lottery policy will be the same as it's been for years but yes, it'll be announced when we get closer to the shows. If I see an official announcement, I'll post it.
The only thing that sometimes varied from show to show were the wristband times and drawing time. They were usually the same time for every show but there was always a couple that differed by an hour. I think that had to do with show start time though. If there was an earlier start due to curfew or something they'd adjust the lottery time.
alas, no bruce for me.
couldn't pull anything but upper level seats, and as much as i love our yum! center, i'd rather not attend any event there if it means sitting in the nosebleeds. it's like you're in a different time zone up there.
oh well, that's $300 saved that i can put toward OBH 2017.

Keep an eye on Ticketmaster in the days leading up to the show. On past tours Bruce has always held back some prime lowers and some ga's to try and keep them from scalpers. They would be released anywhere from a week before to the actual day of show. It was not unheard of to show up at the box office day of and get a great ticket. I've done it, and know plenty of others who have as well.
Some of the best seats I've ever gotten to Bruce shows were picked up in a "drop" the day before. In fact, I've sat right behind Bruce's mom and aunt several times over the years in NJ, NY or Philly.
Tickets for this tour were a tough get, and no idea if he'll be releasing tix in a drop as in the past but it's worth it to keep an eye out if you want to go. In fact, if I don't score a ticket I like at the on sale, I wait and go the drop route every time.
yeah, i have the event page saved to my favorites and plan on checking in daily. there's always hope.

Yes, it's definitely small for a Bruce and E St. Band show. Very small actually and one I'd love to make because of that.
Edit to say this show isn't official yet. It was up on .net but has since been taken down. No idea if that means it's off or was just posted prematurely.
Tix arrived today! A nice surprise in my mail box to close out the year.
Vegas show is out but more US dates added.

How did you like the show?
I saw the post River setlist and you got a pretty sweet run of tunes there,IMO.
HOLY SHIT! I now see what the hype is all about! 3+ hours of straight pro showmanship! No lazers, no fireworks -- just great songs played with precision and passion. As someone who has never seen the Boss live, the setlist was perfect. Was PRAYING for "Candy's Room" or "Because The Night" and we got 'em both!! Man oh man I could listen to that Nils BTN solo all day.
I had the good fortune of being on the floor, and even though I didn't make it into the front pit area, it was a blessing in disguise. The back of the floor is where the party's at! I've never seen such joy in a crowd -- EVERYONE was dancing! Hard not to have a great time when you're surrounded by people smiling, singing along and fist-pumpin'. It's clear that the band feeds off that energy -- for guys who have been doing this for decades, it looked like they were having the time of their lives up there!
My only complaint -- now that I've tasted the live Bruce juice, I'm jonesin' for more. Gotta figure out a way to catch another show on this tour!

Great photo oistheones. Is that your camera from the back of the floor?!?! I'm glad you liked it so much, and I really like your enthusiasm (in this post and all your others). My buddy who has seen Bruce 80+ times went to the DC show the other night and was raving about how incredible the performance was and about how much he was blown away.

No question about that! I've had to pass on a local show and probably a road trip I've had planned because of a health issue but fingers crossed I'll be able to make one of the Brooklyn shows or the rescheduled MSG one.
I've seen him do the whole River album in 09 and it was fantastic. I'd imagine this time around it'll be even better as they've probably got it down perfectly by playing it every show. The post River slots look like the ones that are changing a bit with some great tunes in those slots no matter the rotation.
Enjoy the show and looking or ward to hearing your thoughts.
Just a heads up...... there's no intermission or encore break, just 3+ hours straight through. Most have run at least 3:15.

Longest setlist of the tour so far at 35 songs and pretty close to the longest show time wise as well.
Definitely a good sign for the rest of the tour that you guys got another song after Shout. First time this tour it wasn't the closer, and sets the stage for anything goes for the rest of the shows.
Any Jim sightings in the building last night?
No sign of Jim, but if he was there I doubt he was stuck in the upper deck with us commoners.
Well, I was wrong. I did go to the Dump that Jumps. Got a call on the 16th to go to the St. Paddy's day show at the Sports Arena. They are tearing it down after tonight's show. Sat behind Roy Bittan, 3 rows up. No blocking of the stage from there. 3.5 hours, nonstop. Got more energetic as the night went on. Seen him 5 times between 81-99. Never as wild as this week. The sound was a little muddy, but it was DrumpfXBernieX10 as far as pure fuckin energy goes. Never seen the lights on with 100% of a venue going nuts and the star dead in the middle of the GA section. Almost religious.

Pretty amazing he's still doing 33-35 songs, 3.5 hours nonstop at 66 years old.
I'm not crazy about lights on for the encore but he's been doings it for years now, and I think he likes seeing venues rocking out like you said the Sports Arena was. I think he feeds off that towards the end and it's almost like he's going toe to toe with the fans. I'll see your rocking and raise you with pogoing on stage for a tune. Call or fold? It gets really great when a venue sees his raise and ups the ante because he never folds!

Great description. I was very close, could truly see his face between songs. He looked like he was having the time of his life. The Sports Arena is a huge dump. Had not been there since NY and Crazy Horse, or U2 in 92. Best size for an arena. Like a mini Forum. The biggest small venue, or the smallest big venue. It will be greatly missed.
P.S. There was an old guy in the corner notch front row in front of Steven. He had a Bada Bing T-shirt. Damn I wish I could have taken pics.

I was at all four of his final Philly Spectrum shows and he said several times over that run how the Spectrum and LA Sports Arena were his favorite venues. Loved the fact they were packed with fans and no damn suites.
Here's one of my all time favorite Bruce moments, and it closed the main set of the final Spectrum show. An audible from a sign he spotted and was running around yelling "curveball, curveball" to the band. They nailed it and blew the roof off the joint. I was almost right where this was filmed from and like your show, you could clearly see how much he was loving it and fun he was having.
I really hope LA gets this one tonight. It was so good he added it to the encore for the remaining shows of the 09 tour.

*sigh* Would love to see Bruce, but a Sunday night ticket over 2 hours away from me and Mark is difficult to do with work at 6 am the next day. Some day.....he looks like a healthy man.

Steensboro!!! Another venue he absolutely loves.
I get the Sunday night thing. It would be rough enough if it was in Charlotte. I know I'm always spent after a Bruce show, and like him, I need a day off in between shows.
He is looking healthy but I think having some back issues. He's not jumping around as much, climbing on pianos, or running up into the reserved seats to chug a fan's beer but he's still crowd surfing!
Wow, just wow! I still can't believe what I just saw last night. the longest Bruce show in the US ever and quite possibly his longest show ever! Gonna have to wait for the soundboard for an official time but by most accounts it was 4:05!!!
For me it was a setlist for the ages. Didn't venture past 1974 for almost the first two hours of the show. Just amazing. All night the energy, and performances were as good as ever and even after all these years, this one ranks right up there with the best shows I've ever seen him do. Still trying to process what I got to see and be a part of last night, but all I know is I'll be doing my damnedest to finish work early enough Friday to head back to Philly and see what he has in store for us on night 2.

Me too, and it was sheer perfection! When I got to my spot in the pit about 1/2 hour before showtime and saw the chairs for the strings setup, I was thrilled and enjoyed every second of it. Honestly the whole show was that way. Bruce and the band are hitting on all cylinders, and each song was done about as good as I've ever seen them done. Just amazing.
I'm worn out and don't think that show could be topped, but I'll be doing my best to get there Friday night and live it all again, no matter what he wants to play.
Yeah, I suppose that looks like a pretty okay show...too bad you had to sit through Hungry Heart again, though. And not a single tune from Tunnel of Love?? I dunno, seems pretty ho-hum, I hope night 2 treats you better.
Amazing that after all these years and all those shows he can still blow your mind. Have a blast tomorrow night. Let us know if night two tops night one. I bet there is a chance.

Haha, I hear ya but honestly after the first almost two hours (songs 1-12) and then getting the next 4 tunes, I didn't care what he wanted to play. The show could've ended there and I would've still been thrilled.
It's funny, last night after that run of tunes I thought back to Forecastle 12 and how I felt after the Under the Overpass soundcheck. I walked away from that feeling if I didn't see another song that day because of the weather I was ok with it. That's how special the sc set was. Last night I had that same feeling after that start to the show. After the halfway point, the rest was gravy but luckily enough for me he kept piling on last night.
Downbound Train is my favorite tune off of BITUSA, and it was fantastic last night, as was Streets of Philadelphia. The Jungleland was the best one I've seen since Clarence passed, and I've been lucky enough to have seen it a few times on recent tours. Hell, if I'm being honest even the tunes I've seen a ton like BTR, 10th, Dancing etc. were top notch, and done to near perfection.
Amazing to me at his and the bands ages they don't seem to have lost anything off their fastball. You'd think after all these years they'd lose it a bit or get bored with some of the tunes and just go through the motions but it honestly was just the opposite. Probably a very similar reason why I'm drawn to MMJ. They never phone it in either and just kill it every time as well, and I never tire of seeing them.

It's true, and a big reason why I keep going back again and again and again and.....
I definitely will let you know about the show and am with you there's a chance. Hard to imagine it will top night1 but if anyone can do it, it's him.
I'm up against it at work though and not sure I'll be able to make it in time but I sure as hell am gonna try! If I do make it, I'll post my thoughts on the show for sure.
Aw, I was just messin'. Such an awesome show!

Oh yeah, I know how that can be. I saw Swans the other night in SF and couldn't string together a coherent sentence for days. Love reading your thoughts here!
No updates...... it looks like ericm had to work late on night 2. Bummer.

Yup. Friday just didn't work out for me. I gave it a shot but just too much to get done and by the time I got home, making the start of the show was impossible. I might've sacrificed the opener any other time but figuring it was going to be NYCS again, that would've been tough to take missing that one. It was one of the many highlights of night1 for me. Throw in the oppressive heat, and I just thought better of pushing it.
On a happier note, Bruce Aussie and NZ tour officially announced for any of our friends here down that way. It's not billed as The River Tour and after these US shows, I'm sure people down under are going to be in for a real treat. Go if you have the chance!
