Years ago, I picked up a vinyl copy of "It Still Moves" -- the copy that came with the CD as well. As great as the album was, the vinyl just sounded awful. So flat, so compressed -- just no life at all. To top it all off, the songs that segued together had tiny "clicks" in between them -- as if it was a digital playback source "changing tracks"! I was left bewildered and longing for analog comforts.
However, it has come to my attention that this was a reissue and the original pressings were limited to 1000 numbered copies. I'm sure someone here has one of these copies -- so perhaps some of you can answer my question: how do those slabs o' vinyl sound in comparison to the reissue?
This is a great album that deserves a great edition on vinyl.
Thanks in advance to anyone who can help me figure out the best-sounding vinyl edition of this album!
About 6 months before the reissuse came out I came across a UK import of ISM on vinyl. It was number 171/1000. Keep in mind at this time none of us knew anything of a reissue so to complete my collection of original pressings I spent a boat load on it and ended up being very happy with it. Let me just say that it sounds phenomenal. My roommate picked himself up a copy of the reissue sometime last year and we have compared them side by side more than once. Mine blows his out of red patoka sea. Sounds much warmer and is definiely much louder. I also noticed that my inner rings on each vinyl have the real picture of the bear covered in gold unlike all the others ive seen that have just the purple background and all that is on it.
Thank you very much for that info! Just what I was looking for. I knew there had to be a better pressing of It Still Moves out there. Now -- to track one down!
Hate to infuse this board with yet another vinyl thread, but I finally got my hands on a numbered, original pressing of ISM and this is definitely worth a bump.
WHOA! What a difference. Comparing this original pressing to the reissue that comes with the CD is like comparing two totally different albums -- the original really opens up the recording, and like a good vinyl pressing should, it gives the album room to breathe. You can finally hear the air in the room, unlike that compressed, lifeless mess that was the reissue. Definitely worth tracking down a copy.
Funnily enough, the poster above me who suggested it was worth tracking down an original got number 171 -- and I managed to find 170! What are the odds?
Can you guys tell me - is the numbering on the sleeve or the vinyl itself? thanks

Also, I'm curious about how many pressings there have been of this record. I got mine fairly early and have never really thought it sounded as good as it should.

Mine has the number on the back of the sleeve.
there are a few used copies (some factory sealed but under used) 2003 original pressings for around $50-$60 on amazon.
pretty sure my copy is a repress but i'll check when i get home.
I think the original 1000 pressings are have the better sound. I got one off of amazon with cd for 20$ and it sounds flat.
Yeah, I have the repressing, and it doesn't sound that great.
I need to get my hands on one of these.
I think I have the reissues of Tennessee Fire and At Dawn (Colored Vinyls). Both of which have several sound quality issues throughout the listens.

Mine is on the back sleeve in a little white box in the bottom of the left hand corner. And now that I have went in there and looked at it again, it's not number 171...i have number 193. Not that it makes any difference.

just to clarify...so is it on the back of the artwork or do you have to be able to open the vinyl to see?

See, I have the colored at dawn (blue and green) and I think it sounds great.

Weird my At Dawn is Orange and Red, whereas my Tennessee Fire is Blue and Green.
Also the issues could be just my own copies but at times they are significant. I feel like the colored vinyls also for some reason pick up more dust and I don't know how that would even be possible.

I'm not sure if my at dawn is a repressing or not. Are the originals black? Also, my at dawn didn't come with the cd, do any of them?

Nope neither my TTF or AT Dawn came with discs although I believe that the colored vinyls were repressings made through ATO in conjunction with Darla

Yeah, I figured it was a repressing. Strange how mine and yours are different colors. Maybe they alternated between the two albums. I dont have ttf, so I couldn't tell you.

My Z, It Still Moves, and Celebracion came with cd's the others didn't.
I'm pretty sure the colored version of AD and TTF are reissues.
I wish there was some kind of MMJ vinyl guide.... ::)
actually, this is pretty good: http://www.gerpotze.com/mymorningjacket/albums.html (http://www.gerpotze.com/mymorningjacket/albums.html)
I have 2 copies of the original Badman pressing with the number BRC-968 for sale. Email if interested jeffroutson79@gmail.com. All they are doing is collecting dust on my shelf and need to go to someone who will actually enjoy them. $35 + shipping each.

dang would've made a good bday present . i'll have to get back to you on that.
i'm just getting into vinyl so i bought the repressing. i figured, hell, this will be the 2nd time i've bought these albums, why not make the 2nd time be the vinyl? i'm not an elitist or anything, i just really like vinyl A LOT better than cd. you get the cd with the vinyl, you're good to go!
sorry, but the only thing i would consider shelling out $60 to $70 for on vinyl would be my bloody valentine's loveless on vinyl. i bought most all the radiohead records on vinyl and most were all the capitol re-releases, and for the most part they werent that bad.but hey they sound good to me.
i love the packaging and the fact that i can burn a cd-r and play it in my car.thats the "portable" for me since my ipod got stolen a year ago.my physical copy of an album, for the most part, will be on vinyl solely from now on. i'm glad to have made some of my first vinyl purchases as a collector ISM through Circuital, for sure and can't wait to see them in tuscaloosa next month
:)
right on.
