The RCA site says that MMJ will be on Conan on September 18th!

Holy shit!  The jacket is 'bout to blow up!

I'm really looking forward to this! I hope they let it loose. I want to have footage of them that I can show a few Doubting Thomases.

I wonder what song(s) they will play?  Thoughts, anyone?  I'm putting my bets on "Dance Floors" or (crosses fingers) "Run Thru"...

Post by: otter on Sep 16, 2003, 10:26 AM
John, I highly doubt it's going to be Run Thru...unless Jim would be willing to say "Oh She'll Run...instead of oh shit run. Last I knew, shit was still a no no on tv.

Dancefloors is probably a good bet..or Magheeta...or maybe even Golden...Just One Thing might be short enough as well.

Who knows...it'll be great no matter which one

You are correct, it will be awesome no matter what tune is played...!

all I can say it is about time the Jacket gets their due....
I am excited they are going to be on Conan but I want to know what the h@!! Conan was waiting for!!

At Dawn is one of the best rock albums of all time - that should have been their ticket to rockstardom

Not that ISM isn't a worthy vessel on which to sail aboard.

peace,

Tim

and I am hoping for Dance Floors, but whatever they play will be incredible

I think that hipkink's on the right track...BE SURE TO TELL EVERYONE YOU KNOW ABOUT THIS HAPPENING! Hell - better yet, sit 'em down with you to watch this Thursday, Sept. 19TH!!!  ::)

This may help all of us in future negotiations with friends who may be unsure about whether they want to go with us to a Jacket concert...Dude...WHAT BETTER WAY FOR US TO SELL THE CONCERT THAN TO GIVE THE FOOLISH DOUBTERS A PREVIEW?  ;)

Love.

Driving back to the 'ville from the Buffalo show took almost ten hours and gave us plenty of time to discuss such important matters as "What're they going to play on Conan?"

My guess is their label would like them to play something from the new album, and the suits would probably want them to play Mahgeeta or Dance Floors. My own conclusion is that in a television setting where you only get one song, One Big Holiday would work better for the viewers at home.

But Jim is just independent minded enough to play an old release, something unreleased, or even a cover. That's one of the things that make him special. Of course, he's a nice guy who wants to please the folks who've invested in his band, soooooo . . . I suspect it will be something from It Still Moves.

If they decide to go the quieter route instead of a big rocker, I think they might go for Just One Thing.

A big unknown is how much time they will be offered, since virtually all the new songs are more than twice as long as the typical three minute slice of pop.

p.s.
The acoustic songs at the Buffalo Show were spectactular, especially "Hopefully".  The venue in Rochester had TERRIBLE acoustics and both the Sleepy Jacksons and MMJ never had a chance to sound great there.

Quotebigbang is on the right track

Since I covered a lot of territory in that post, I'm not sure which track I was on!

But my guess is One Big Holiday would serve them best in this situation and Jim is smart enough to figure that out. So I'm betting on One Big.

You americans are very lucky.  Once and a while you have the occasion to participate in a mmj contest.  Something, we Europeans can only dream about.  :( But hell, the only things that counts is the music.

Here's to rock 'n roll

Alright my official response is Steam Engine.

At least that is what I am hoping for.  I had that song on repeat about 20 times in the last 10 hours.

That is one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard.

One Big Holiday

The delivery of the lines, the pacing, everything about this song screams BIG HIT to me.  It's the song I remembered after my first show and the song almost everyone I know who's heard the album remembered.

I think (and hope) that this will be the song on the show tonight.

if you don't get nbc, and get comedy central, they air conan at 7 or 7:30 pm. same show as the night before.
Title: Re: MMJ on Conan O'Brian Show
Post by: thebigbang on Sep 18, 2003, 02:00 PM
Since Riny suggests it won't be One Big Holiday, I'm joining the Evening Jacket and voting that it will be Steam Engine.

Can you imagine folks at home hearing that beautiful tune coming at them when they're used to getting hit with noisy garage band throwbacks on Conan's show?

Here's wishing them well, whatever they play. And I think an equally interesting question is whether the folks at home will ever get to see Jim's face. Or will they get the "regular live performance Jim" and just see lots of hair.  And will they get the Buffalo?

I think he should keep the mystery and just give them the hair!

Post by: khanja on Sep 18, 2003, 04:23 PM
A 70% chance of "Mahgeeta", with scattered "Dancefloors" possible...

Methinks there's a reason they put those two up front on the album...

Although a cover of "Light My Fire" is the ever present possibility..."If I was to say to you/Girl we couldn't get much better!"
Title: one big holiday on Conan

the guys were SPECTACULAR and jim DID keep the mystery well wrapped, hiding behind his hair. great great great!

conan: "that band was 140% commitment."

if anyone didn't see it, let me know. it's on tape.

I think that song kind of sounded like a Neil Young tune.

I couldn't see the singers face with all that hair...

Now we know-- Yes on the HAIR. No on the BUFFALO. And yes to One Big Holiday.

Congrats to MMJ on a great performance on Conan, but they tear it up anywhere they play so it's to be expected. Thing is, now a lot more people know about it.

I can't imagine anyone who puts on a better live show than these guys. Not with the material and energy they are working with.

Eight days till the Louisville stand. Joy to the World!

Hmmmm . . . I'm throwin' a penalty flag on Riny, since I was all over "One Big Holiday" (check the thread) as the obvious choice and then he comes on and tells me that wasn't correct. Here's a story about adversity:

Isabel knocks out my power at about 2:30pm yesterday.  I lament the fact that I won't be able to view or record the MMJ performance on Conan.

I can't really read or watch TV, I go to bed around 9:30pm.

I awake at about 11:30pm and notice one of the living room lights is on.

I bolt outta bed and run downstairs to set the VCR.

Satisfied, I go back to bed.

This morning I awake to find that the EXTENDED local news coverage of Isabel caused Leno and Conan to be broadcast later than usual.

As such, my tape cut off before MMJ hit stage.

I cursed and shook my fist in the air, shouting, "ISABELLLLLLLLL"!

"aurally smacked awake" --  I like that phrase, as I think that is an excellent way of describing what happens to most folks who see and hear them live for the first time.

People have now become so unaccustomed to seeing anyone approach music and fans with respect and enthusiasm that hearing MMJ absolutely awakens you to just how bankrupt the pose of cool detachment and cynicism really is.

My Morning Jacket is a definite wake up call. Everyone on this board who has seen them live will tell you that absolutely no band working today will leave you with a better feeling after a show. After you see the Chicago show, come back to the board and tell us about your first time wearing the Jacket!

Hello all.  I'm 34, and have lost my enthusiasm for music.  I probably haven't bought a CD in 5 years.  Nothing out there today grabs me.  I have a ton of money invested in a fabulous sound system that, for the most part, sits silent.  I'm sick of my old CDs, and nothing new has interested me for a long time.  Until........

I was semi-watching Conan on Comedy central yesterday.  Usually when a band comes out and plays, I listen for a minutes and change the channel.

I was reading something when MMJ came out and started BELTING out a tune.....I looked up and thought "Holy Crap!  Who are these guys?"  Long hair, (NOBODY has long hair anymore!) classic guitars and bare feet!  Wild!

The song played, I believe others have identified as "One Big Holiday" was the first song in years to actually REACH me--I hadn't had this feeling about music in general for years....It was powerful, yet melodic.  The lead singer was pouring his soul into this song, and I felt it......I was totally pulled in.

I turned the volume up as high as my tv would go....wishing I was recording it so that I could play it again and to show my wife.....The song built up to a powerful peak with each guitarist taking a turn at a solo.....It was a beautiful thing.....

I grabbed a piece of paper and hoped Conan would mention the name of the band when they finished.  Conan seemed as blown away as I was, and I wrote the name down.

I just want the faithful here to know that I am going to go out and buy my first CD in years......and I will spread the word about MMJ.

Good stuff!!!!!

WOW... gd9704, you wrote exactly what happened to me. I am 38, and your post says everything that I came here to say.

I have been "Hit" with music three times in my life, where I said "WOW! now THAT'S the shit..."

The 1st time was in 1982 when I saw the Rolling Stones live on the Tatoo You tour. They were on top of the game then, and tore the roof off.

The 2nd time was in 2000 when I saw Springsteen live in his reunion tour with the E-Street band. Unbeleivable! Nobody outperforms the Boss on a live show.

The 3rd time was just the other night on Conan!!
These guys brought back the sound of TRUE rock music. The way music SHOULD be today.

I basically ignored the first minute or so of the song, as I didn't know who these guys were, while I tapped away on my computer, then the sound hit me.
..like a brick in the face.

I swear to you, I sat there mezmerized at the way that these guys played. I was spellbound and when it was over, I too was praying that Conan would say the name of the incredible band, and yes, Conan WAS blown away as much as I was. He never gets excited the way he did when they were done.

I have told everyone who will listen about this incredible new sound that I heard, and they look at me kinda funny because I am not one to do that sort of thing.

I'm just an ole' has-been kick ass hair band string plucker, but you guys gave me a feeling like I aint felt for a long time.

Thank you for that, and no matter what, stay true to the music. You are destined to be HUGE!

Same story here! - I was about to turn in for the night, and just as MMJ fired up, I was floored ! I jumped up and ran to the TV not to awaken my wife. Sure am glad Conan mentioned their name! I tried to describe them to my wife in the morning: Skynard, Neil Young, Meat Puppets, Jackson Brownish vocals!? Hair, Gibson, Fender, keyboards, long hair! I couldn't nail it! I too have lost faith in music as my last fav band - The Black Crowes, split, and nothing else out there so far has moved me - until the Conan O'Brian show. I went out today and bought the new album. It is so different than anything today. I was surprised to hear the use of reverb in a time where everything else in the music industry is boringly dry. I want to say thanks to MMJ for NOT being a clone of every other skater/NuMetal/rap/pop-punk-crap band out there!
Cheers MMJ ! Hope you guys go far!   ;)

I recorded the rebroadcast on Comedy Central this past Friday evening.

DAMN GOOD SHIT.

I must've watched that tape of MMJ's performance about 8 or 10 times over the weekend.

It seems surreal to see 'em on TV like that after all this time.

Each time I watched it, I couldn't wipe that big grin off my face.

Kudos!

QuoteI must've watched that tape of MMJ's performance about 8 or 10 times over the weekend.

So I'm not the only fool to do this? I was practically hypnotized by the Conan video and just ran it over and over and over. The magic of MMJ translates through the tube better than I thought it would.

These guys need to get someone to make a good quality recording of a show and put out a DVD. Millions of people don't get to see them live, so that's another way to share the joy that is MMJ. Not to mention a live CD.

The conan taping has become a bit of a ritual for me.  When I wake up in the morning I watch it to get me going.  I can't go to sleep w/o watching it a few hours prior either.  So at least twice a day.  Then when I need a break from my schoolwork (mostly philosophical reading which causes my brain to swell) I que up the tape and have at it again.
AND AGREED!  A DVD WOULD BE AWESOME!

One Big Holiday was the only song broadcast on the Conan show. Someone else may know if they rehearsed At Dawn, but I doubt it since they were promoting the new release of It Still Moves.

Anyone know the cable rerun schedule for the Conan show? I wanted to get a better copy of this performance.

My copy from September was made with a VCR that wasn't working very good, so I bought a new one a couple of weeks ago.  Then I forgot to set it last night!

Anyway, last time around, people said that the Conan show was repeated several times on some cable channels. If you know which ones and when, I'd appreciate hearing from you.

I saw the performance on Conan last night and I have to say that it was one of the best TV performances I've seen by any band. I'd never heard of My Morning Jacket before so I came here to check things out.

Anyway, repeats of Conan usually show the next day on Comedy Central.  So last night's show should be airing again today.  It shows at 5 p.m. here.  I assume that's at 6 p.m. in the Eastern time zone, but I don't know about the others.  Hope that helps.

Thanks John, but me luck has run out on that one, as Comedy Central comes with a bunch of static in my home. I was hoping it was on a different cable channel. Guess I need to get satellite.

Oh well, someone is bound to get a clean digital copy one of these days. Till then, I'll just keep playing that old copy until . . . it's indiscernible. At present rate, that should happen in about three weeks.

Another first time listener here.
Just wanted to chime in that the I thought My Morning Jacket rocked on Conan. That was the first time I had heard of them.

I was in the other room when they came on, and I was immedaitely drawn into the living room by thier gnarly sound. I sat there, entranced, while they performed, all the while begging to Conan "Please say the name of the band when they are done, Conan, PLEASE. I must know who they are." Luckily Conan obliged, so I came over here to find out the name of the song they were playing. I agree with a previous poster in that Conan really seemed geniunly impressed with them. Wow. I am still thinking about it 3 days later.
I will definatly be buying thier cds.

It's on the FTP server if you are interested in downloading it.  I'll see if I can make a mp3 of the performance as well.

Favor requested of the board.

One antidote to the blahs was to pop this show in the vhs and watch and listen 4 or 5 times for "pep and vivation"* and a little air guitar.   But my vhs copy of this is dead, as when we listened this week the sound dropouts have become too much to render desired effects.

While I do have the performance on CD mpeg, I'd like to get a nice clean copy on VHS of DVD to watch on the big tv and not just the little computer image.

If anyone sees this scheduled for repeat, or knows a way to get this burned to DVD, please advise.

Thank you.

* also available through Ale 8 one

One Big Holiday

The delivery of the lines, the pacing, everything about this song screams BIG HIT to me.  It's the song I remembered after my first show and the song almost everyone I know who's heard the album remembered.

I think (and hope) that this will be the song on the show tonight.

So damn cool to go back in this thread and see things like this.

Also, this was a period in time before youtube, so Jacket on Conan was a way to give your friends a "preview" of what they were missing out on. So awesome!!!

exactly!!!!  if it weren't for THIS performance (which made my 13 year old brain go KABLAMMO as i was obsessed with classic rock and Free Bird especially, the song was better than Free Bird and I couldn't contain myself) it may have taken until something like 2007 for me to get into these guys...I'm so grateful this was on TV that night and I got to watch it with my brother. Still my #1 musical guest on TV moment EVER...

I was already into ISM but was on the fence about going to see them (seems stupid now) until I saw that performance. A couple of weeks later I saw them for the first time and it was a top 5 concert for me.
