Ok, so we all know that this is going to be their biggest selling album thus far.  Everything from the major media magazine covers to the SNL appearance portends a big selling album.  First I'm wondering what sort of chart position you think the new album will debut ("Z" debuted at #67 and stayed on for 6 weeks); if I had to guess it would be around #10.  Secondly I'm wondering how "big" they'll actually get after this.  I look at bands regarding their popularity and mainstream success based on album sales as well as what size venues they play.  Will they ever reach stadium like proportions?  Obviously we're not going to be able to see them play clubs that have a capacity much under 1000 (I will actually miss this quite a bit, b/c clubs that size are the best to see a band like MMJ), but will they be able to keep playing venues that host bands on the scale of Wilco or the Flaming Lips?  I think those two bands are good examples of marginally popular bands that can still play in somewhat intimate settings.  Or will they blow up in a White Stripes sort of way or maybe to a lesser degree the same level as say Death Cab for Cutie.  Again, I personally would prefer a sort of Wilco-like level of access and popularity, because then we can still see them without all the fanfare that comes along with monstrous venues.  And no offense, but personally I don't want to see their songs being covered by the next American Idol ;)
yeah, so if it's sad, well you still gotta live till ya die

theyre gonna blow up this much:

I think at their peak theyll be playing those outdoor general admission venues that usually hold 15k or so. I dont think they get as big as the White Stripes, but Wilco seems very likely. Big sales with EU really puts them in Wilco's stratosphere IMO

The Spin review said they were worthy of playing the Super Bowl Halftime Show.  I don't quite buy it, but I see what he was saying.  In some ways they aren't as big as your local cover band, but in some circles, they're bigger than the Beatles.  It's just a matter of who listens and who doesn't.  Right now...who knows.

I think the CD will be about 4.5 inches by 4.75 inches but I know the vinyl will be 12" in diameter with a 12.5x12.5 inch sleeve.

PS. I have my copy of the CD already so I know how big it is for reals.

i think it will be very big. it is getting a ton of buzz, it seems like MMJ is now on a ton of radar screens, way more than this time last year.

I think it's gonna be ginormous,    they can retire now,  sit on the front porch drinking brandy old fashions all day long and play cornhole until they are blue in the face.  :D

One good thing about a band like My Morning Jacket getting big is that they fucking destroy in front of bigger crowds.  When I saw them at Bonnaroo in 06 it was so scary and beautiful that I was afraid to stand up and even look at them, and I'm not kidding (yes, I was a tad bit high) but I saw Radiohead the next night on mushrooms and I didn't get that same feeling of pure otherworldly presences.  If, I mean WHEN MMJ finally becomes the headliner for these types of festivals, people's heads will explode from joy.  This band could play in front of 100,000 people and fill the whole place with sound.  The problem with some bands (I will not name them) that finally get the big break is that their sound isn't very big, and it sounds kind of silly for them to be playing for more than 1,000 people.  MMJ has a very BIG sound.  The more people the better; it will just be a bigger celebration, OBH.

Don't get me wrong, one of my dreams is to see Jim James play a solo acoustic show, and it would be just as cool to see the band play in front of a really small gathering and play some acousic stuff/softer and really just relax, but either way, it is good.

Listening to the Bonnaroo '06 show right now.  My favorite song of MMJ's is THIS version of OBH, when he starts singing, the crowd is singing right along with him.  And they are equally as loud!!  I get tingles whenever I hear, "WAKIN" UP, FEELIN"....GOOD AND LE-IMBER!!"  It's an amazing feeling to experience.  I can only imagine what was going through the band's minds as the crowd was singing back to them with out amplifiers and without microphones...but with super volume.  It's surreal!  This band is loved.   :D

I like the Yankee Hotel Foxtrot comparison.  I instantly thought of QOTSA, Songs for the Deaf myself.  There are some more radio friendy tracks on EU like Evil Urges, Highly Suspcious (college radio), I'm Amazed, Aluminum Park, Remnants, Touch Me I'm Going to Scream pt. 2.  I can see 2/3 songs from this album getting ALOT of play soon, especially after Bonarroo. :D
