No way?!?!!  :D :o :D :D :o

I mean, the way it ended (which did any of you see coming as far as who Viggo was?  :o), it screamed for a sequel, but it just seemed like a movie/story that wasn't going to take that next step. I guess partially I thought that because it's not like it did all that well $$ wise I would think.

I've read articles where people from Russia say Viggo's accent in that movie was the best they've ever heard from someone whose 1st language isn't Russian or is fluent in it. He was a bad MF'er in that movie.

I can't remember who won Best Actor 2 years ago off the top of my head, but I thought Viggo deserved it (and Philip Seymour Hoffman got screwed for not at least getting nominated for Before the Devil Knows You're Dead which is probably the best movie I've seen the last couple years).

I guess thats 2 years in a row the actor I wanted/thought should win best actor didnt  :P

Before the Devil Knows You're Dead started off great but turned into a convoluted mess of epic proportions.  Sidney Lumet's done so much better.  PSH killed it, though.

Great Cronenberg interview here (he comes across like such a nice guy): http://www.cbc.ca/thehour/videos.html?id=1082029804

I only saw it once, and really need to watch it again, but I'm interested to know why you thought it turned into a convoluted mess?

The only part that wasnt messy was the first 5 minutes when Ms. Tomei looked oh so fantastic, after that, it was all downhill, but wasn't that almost expected?

Hawke and PSH try to rob their parent's jewelry store - what good can really come from that?!

Add on top of that PSH is a heroin addict in a dissolving marriage whose job seems to be on the downside, and Hawke is a deadbeat dad who gets by paycheck to paycheck. Combine each of them robbing a jewelry store, and you have an unstoppable downward spiral. I thought the movie was engrossing and entertaining at the same time, while each and every character hooked you to their own personal life/problems.

The acting was great all around - PSH, Ethan Hawke, Albert Finney, Marisa Tomei, Michael Shannon, Amy Ryan (aka Beadie). Fantastic.

I do remember their being quite a bit of flashbacks and time changing, but I also remember it feeling seamless.

I definitely need to see it again, but I thought it was brilliant.

That twist ruined an otherwise excellent movie. Viggo and Naomi's relationship would have been much more interesting if it hadn't happened. But I loved Viggo's performance so it'd be great to see another movie with that character.

Bumbeli

Just watched Brokeback Mountain and A History of Violence.
First one was pretty good, carried by Jake Gyllenhal and Heath Ledger mostly but that's fine with me.
A History of Violence turned out to be quite boring. I was expecting quite a lot from this movie as a few people told me it's excellent, but it didn't do anything for me.

I had high expectations for that one, and it disappointed me as well. It was decent though.

Eastern Promises is much, much better though

Ruined it?! I dont think so.

I wouldnt be surprised if Naomi isnt even in the 2nd one. I would expect them to focus for on Viggo's character now being on the inside and what happens with that.

I don't think the twist ruined Eastern promises.
Also, I think A History Of Violence is Cronenberg's best movie.

Edit: Maybe not best, but there are a few that are close: Dead Ringers, The Dead Zone, The Fly as well as Eastern Promises are up there. The only one I didn't like was Naked Lunch, witch started out good but got too weird even for me. I haven't seen any of his early movies since I don't really like horror that much. Are Crash or Spider worth checking out?

I need to know how/why you thought it was better than Eastern Promises.

Also, if you like AHOV that much, I think you'd really like Appaloosa, directed by Ed Harris and also starring himself and Viggo. Hard to explain, but how it is shot is very similar to the same feeling I got with AHOV where the scenery/landscape shots feel wide open and you feel like almost in the scenes when watching (many of) them.

That last sentence might not make sense to you  :D

I saw Appaloosa on on demand, but the picture wasn't that good cause we didn't have an hdmi cable or hd box for our new tv yet. I thought it was alright, but would like to watch it again. My favorite western of RECENT years is still The Proposition.
With Eastern Promises there's some shocking/surprising stuff that happens that didn't have the same impact on my second viewing. I think both films are great, I give a slight edge to AHOV at the moment.
I know what you mean about feeling like you're in a movie.

Well, with what I was talking about with Appaloosa, it would probably be hard to notice then. I didnt think it was great, but I thought it was good and by the time it was over, it was kind of like the sum was greater than its parts. I thought Ed Harris' performance overshadowed Viggo though, something I didnt expect. I did not like The Proposition much at all, although I think I was kind of dozing off as it went on. To each his own. My favorite western of this decade, although it blurs the western line, was probably Renegade.

There definitely are a couple scenes that dont have the shock value the 2nd time, but I also dont think that's what made the movie so good. The story is great, on many levels, and detailed. But Viggo just straight up steals the movie and every scene he's in.

The Proposition was excellent! That, Jesse James & Open Range are my fav Westerns of recent years...
God will forgive them. He'll forgive them and allow them into Heaven.....I can't live with that.

Scratch that, Jesse James is my favorite

Havent seen Open Range. Blew it off as another Costner movie that would suck, although whenever I eventually get around to seeing them, Im embarrassed to say I thought they werent bad (Waterworld, Postman, etc)

I agree with you on A History of Violence. I love that movie, especially William Hurt's fifteen minutes. I've never seen Dead Ringers and, though it was a fairly good movie, The Fly was too gross for me to really enjoy it. Dead Zone is really good though. It's fun to watch it back to back with some West Wing to compare Martin Sheen's characters. I haven't seen Crash, but Spider was a good movie. I didn't especially like it, but I want to see it again. It had some very good acting and it was just well done in general. It's been a long time since I watched it, so I can't really remember specifics.

I watched The Wrestler over the weekend.  Thoughts:

1. Wresting is crazy.
2. Marisa Tomei still looks really good.
3. The plot was pretty predictable.
4. Mickey Rourke was good in the role.  I don't know if I'd say he was great, but he was good.  I'm glad Sean Penn won the Oscar.

I thought it was a documentary or something, then about halfway through, I just went WHAAAT!!!?!?!  :o

That definitely has some potential, and if Peter Jackson is directing it, my expectations are already high. It looks like it comes out in August if Im reading this clock on their website correctly. Glad I dont have to wait like a year and a half to see it.

The movie website is nuts too. I just felt like I hacked into some FBI grid or something  ;D
