Tyrannosaur - Paddy Considine's (Dead Man's Shoes) directorial debut starring the excellent Peter Mullan (NEDs, My Name Is Joe) & an exceptional Olivia Coleman (best known as David Mitchell's on/off girlfriend in Peep Show)

'Tyrannosaur' Trailer

the DVDrip of this leaked on the net awhile ago, i downloaded then never watched it.  did you end up seeing it yet?  sounds weird, might re-download it if it gets some decent reviews on here.

I really want to watch this. It got great reviews and won awards. And any movie with Peter Mullan in it is worth watching.
I thought it was excellent. Clearly not a 'happy' film but you get the idea from the trailer. Olivia Coleman really was exceptional, shame on BAFTA for not even acknowledging her performance...
God will forgive them. He'll forgive them and allow them into Heaven.....I can't live with that.

Yeah it's bleak but unforgettable, the Damien Dempsey song (Sing All Our Cares Away) during the wake scene is heartbreaking. Great film.

2nd full trailer for Prometheus, really can't wait for this!

Prometheus - Official Full HD Trailer - Ridley Scott, Michael Fassbender, Noomi Rapace
My excitement for this grows with each new glimse.  I know they're acknowledging this as a story within the same "universe" of Alien, but I found these particular images striking, as they all relate to the "space jockey" ship and remains found in the first Alien film.

The fact that my heart's beating is all the proof you need.

Fully

I just watched a German movie , "3", about a married couple who each begin an affair with the same guy. It was rather interesting, dealt with topics such as mortality, infertility, abortion, etc. The best scene, of course, was when they each discover the other one is sleeping with the same guy.  It was a very interesting film.

Troll Hunter - didn't quite meet my expectations but it was still entertaining. Be warned if you suffer from 'found footage' movie-motion-sickness...

I really enjoyed it. Excellent performances and perfect scenery. I like how the producers stuck to strict troll legend and likewise didn't try to make them look like generic scary Hollywood monsters.

Can't wait for Hunger Games. Taking the boy on opening night.

Have you seen Battle Royale?
Yes. I know the author claims to never have heard of it while writing Hunger Games. I kind of believe that as it's really an abscure cult movie, but damn if the similiarities are not strikingly similiar.

It's not really obscure though, especially in this day and age of the internet and the huge influence of Asian cinema on North America and Britain. The original novel was a big pop culture hit and the film is still revered in Asia and those in the know in the rest of the world including filmmakers such as Tarantino, critics and movie buffs. And any film with Takeshi "Beat" Kitano will get noticed. Goddamit, Battle Royale is a fucking work of genius!
I never even heard of it until you pimped it out here. Unless you are someone like Tarantino, the majority of "average" movie fans are not going to know it. I bet if you ask 100 people, maybe 20 would know it. Just my opinon. And yes, it's fucking genius. The day I got it through netflix, I think I watched it like 3 times.

More on the greatness and not-quite-cult status of Battle Royale - and questioning the author of Hunger Games for being a downright liar.

Martha Marcy May Marlene - 4.5/5

Amazing movie. The viewer is left in the dark and guessing through much of it but the cinematography is perfect, somewhat grainy, dark and dreamlike. Acting is superb esp around Elizabeth Olsen's breakthrough lead and John Hawkes as the serpentine yet laconic cult leader...The tension really mounts in the last 1/3rd and keeps you guessing if what is going on is real or a manifestation of the trauma Martha experienced. Great Great film.

into the abyss - pretty good documentary.  fairly standard herzog style.  about a death row inmate and his crime.  definitely worth watching if you dig his other stuff.

Hunger Games is still a great series (and it goes past the Battle Royal competition) and the movie was fantastic IMO.

Shame - well, this movie made me feel... not so bad about my internet porn habits.

::spoiler: the first 10minutes is almost pure cock in your face. end of spoiler::

take shelter - enjoyed this movie a lot.  not really sure why since not a whole lot happened in it.  I think it was the acting.  most of it was pretty good and almost every person minus the wife and kid are recognizable actors but not super popular ones.  the priest from deadwood, it stars Michael Shannon and co stars Shea Whigham both from boardwalk empire.  shit, it even has kenny powers bitch who he gets prego in it.

it's one of my favorite types of movies, the kind where you can't tell if the person is crazy or if what they're paranoid about is really going to happen, or maybe even both.  and it seems like a larger statement of the general paranoia of our country.  definitely has flaws, the ending is sorta sloppy and there's a couple meh scenes but overall for what it was, damn was there some solid acting.  one of the few movies I thought about the next day.  7/10

Movies Id recommend that Ive seen the past few months

State of Grace
Watched this twice in the past week (HBO has been showing it). This is probably the most underrated crime drama of the last 30 years. This is Gary Oldman's best performance, I dont care what anyone else says. John C. Reilly is good in a small role, and Ed Harris puts in one of his best performances as the flawed Irish mob boss. This is where everyone shouldve realized Sean Penn was a great actor, but considering this made less than $2M at the box office, Im guessing that didnt happen until Carlito's Way if not Dead Man Walking. The dialogue isnt quite as consistent as the other heavyweight crime dramas and gangster films, but everything else about it is top notch
4.4/5

Moon
Loved it....Its funny how this direct DVD from Netflix has been sitting on my couch for about 2 months before I finally watched it tonight, yet I continue to watch most of the garbage they have streaming every other night or so. At around 20-25 minutes in, I was thinking "okay, Im not sure I can handle this for even 90 minutes but its decent so far" and then 5 minutes later I thought "shit, alright Im ready for the ride"...Ive liked Sam Rockwell for awhile, but this was easily his best and most notable performance to date. Without looking up that years (2009?) best actor nominees, Im surprised he wasnt nominated because I dont recall that happening. What in the first half is sci-fi leans more towards drama in the latter half and it was even better. I wouldnt call anything twists here, but there are multiple well done turns that left me very happy. Really enjoyed this and even was telling myself during the movie that I couldnt believe how good it turned out after a slow start
4.5/5

Chronicle
Initially, I was worried the first hand camera usage ("found footage" style) that is probably 75% of the cinematography would get annoying, but after the first 10 minutes or so it really just blends in with the movie and I didnt find it problematic at all, barely even noticed it. In fact with how well done it was and the connection it provided with the lead actor, I thought it made the movie better than had it just used traditional filming techniques. I found Chronicle to be unique in this aspect with how well it was pulled off, but also because (superpowers aside) the characters and their relationships felt very realistic (think Elephant, although different), like you werent even watching a movie but real life. This was likely aided by an entire cast of unrecognizable actors, with Michael B. Jordan being the lone exception, although I think anyone who hasnt watched The Wire, Parenthood, or Friday Night Lights would lump him in with the rest of the cast here. Jordan and the lead teenager do solid work acting, and although the rest is average at best, interesting dialogue minimizes this as a problem. It had a roller coaster of emotions throughout, which also was quite effective and at times, exhilirating. Special effects arent anything special (namely the flying), but again I felt like this kept in line with the rest of the movie feeling authentic. I also thought there were numerous subtle things that elevated the movie as well (for instance, getting a nosebleed when they would overextend their powers or one of the other guys was in trouble/distressed; the Tibet angle). At only 83 minutes, I left wishing it had been longer. All in all, I guess the simplest way to praise it would be its a movie that on the surface is sci-fi/fantasy but by the end it leaves the viewer feeling like they just watched a drama about a troubled teen
3.9/5

Cyrus
I remember it being portrayed as a straight-up comedy but it's definitely more of a drama with some subtle, dark comedic moments. I thought the first 15 minutes or so were hilarious and I think they missed on another 15-20 minutes following it that could have been very funny with JCReilly and Tomei casually dating, but instead the almost instantly turn into this serious couple. I also think the phase of the movie once JCR realizes Jonah Hill is fucking with him and they both try to "one up" each other sort of was far too short and couldve added more laughs as well. Despite these complaints, its lack of extending these parts of the movie lead to a very fast 90min watch I thought. Although uneven and I found the stuff with JCR's ex to be superfluous, with her wedding being the exception, I liked it. Was surprised to see it was written and directed by Mark Duplass (Pete from The League) and his brother.
3/5

Monsters
I probably liked this more than I should have knowing it was basically "freestyle filmmaking" going in and I dont think there was even a script for the dialogue for the most part. Cinematography was quite good all things considered. It was different than I expected, and more of a journey type drama with monsters/aliens as the backdrop than the suspense sci-fi/horror you would expect with a movie like this. I thought the 2 leads did well enough to keep it interesting. Lack of chemistry didnt bother me because that wasnt really what they were going for IMO, and the 2 leads arent even actors. Reading back, I didnt takeaway the immigration angle others seem to mention. I thought the point of the ending was that as humans or maybe Americans, we fear what we dont understand or even vilify something undeserving of it. Either way, I enjoyed this
3.4/5

Nobody's Fool
I expected Newman to be good, but Id probably put this in my top 5 favorite performances for him all time, and best post 70's performance by him. Really, I should try to start watching some of his lesser films because I cant say Ive ever seen him in a film I didnt like or where he wasnt good. I find loveable loser and/or small town films like this to be easy to enjoy, but this one felt like it had a little more character than most of them, likely thanks to Newman but also a great job by the supporting cast (had no idea Philip Seymour Hoffman was in this). Bruce Willis didnt over-Willis his character, and Melanie Griffith made me want to be the one to get married and go to Hawaii with her (I dont remember her rack being this great in Something Wild  :o ). The final scene did feel a little sudden, but it shouldve ended around that point because of a couple great ones that preceded it. Really just a lot of likeable characters that were easy to connect or empathize with, a very good script, and a great performance from Paul Newman make this a movie I dont see how anyone could dislike
4.5/5

30 Minutes or Less
Not as good as I expected, but still thought it was decent. Didnt know Michael Pena was in it, thought his character was pretty funny. This is really Kenny Powers and Aziz Ansari's movie, without them, this wouldve been pretty bad but I thought they had a ton of funny lines. Worth watching but dont expect a great comedy.
3/5 (1/5 without KMFP and Aziz)

Margin Call
I havent seen many movies from 2011 yet, but in what appears to be a weak year I think this will end up being one of the stronger movies and almost certainly in my Top 10. I didnt understand all of the business/stock market talk, but I got the gist that they were up shit's creek so that didnt bother me. Very rare for a drama like this to maintain the suspense via dialogue the entire film, but I thought it did for nearly 90% of the scenes. Excellent screenplay, deserving of a nomination, and very good acting overall. Quinto was good; Spacey, Bettany, and Irons were all very good. At first, I thought it was a weird casting choice for Bettany here, but I ended up thinking he stole most of his scenes with the best performance Ive seen from him. Hard to really feel for people in positions making boatloads of money, but I think they achieved that here with a handful of characters. Only complaint was the final scene....4.1/5

SPOILER:
WTF was up with that last scene?!! Before it even started really, I look over to my dad and say "Im surprised it didnt end right there, wouldve been perfect that after Spacey says he needs the money, a bunch of people get fired, and the new guy gets promoted"...Instead we get an awkward scene with Spacey trying to bury his dead dog in what one could only assume to be his ex-wife's front yard. Not only do I think they shouldve ended it when I said, with Spacey walking out to the elevator, but the additional scene was one of the biggest headscratchers Ive ever seen in a good movie

Hugo
Excellent, it really drew me in with its charm and enchanting setting, time period, etc to where some detractions didnt get in the way of my enjoyment. The 3D effects were excellent and in the same ballpark as Avatar to me. The first 30-40 minutes I found to be a little slow, both with the story and character development, but it kept me interested by focusing on the visuals during this time. Looking back, I think this was a wise decision because it really drew me into the film and allowed it to fully display how beautiful it was while also allowing that to somewhat take a backseat as the focus shifts more to the story over the last 80 minutes. Thought Kingsley was superb and how his story unfolded was the thing that most interested me with Hugo. I also see how people may have been turned off or sidetracked by Scorsese's "ode" to the history of film in the latter half, but I loved it and that was just another part that got to me with its charm. Thought the 3D, although less in your face, was very well utilized in these sequences as well. Actually, my favorite part of the whole movie was likely Kingsley's flashback as we finally found out how his life truly played out and what happened to him. Thought Sacha Baron Cohen was surprisingly good even if his role was a charicature of itself, and Chloe Moretz also flashed some talent. Really my only complaints may be casting Emily Mortimer and Jude Law, yet only giving each a handful of lines, but thats about as minor as it comes. I cant say I have much interest to see it again, but I wouldnt have expected that going in anyway. Definitely was worth seeing in 3D and I feel youre missing out if you watch it otherwise, but between that and the cinematography/art direction, an interesting and charming story, and very good acting, its worth the 1 watch. Very deserving of its Oscar wins (art direction, cinematography, visual effects, sound editing, sound mixing) and noms (best film, director, costume design, adapted screenplay, original score)
4.3/5

...and 1 that I would stress to AVOID, AvOID!!!

War Horse
So a Spielberg-directed film set in WWI Europe has got to be good, right? Wrong. If you are a 10-14 year old boy you will probably love this movie, if not, there are very few reasons I could recommend seeing it. It starts out slow about a struggling family trying to keep their farm, alongside headscratching actions and over the top dialogue, that is only saved by some nice acting from Peter Mullan. In retrospect, this was probably the strongest portion of the film somehow. After this half hour or so start where the bond between horse and boy is formed, the war starts and the horse is sold to a British Army officer and from there, it is basically about the horse bouncing around Europe during the war from pseudo-owner to the next. The horse is never in one place long enough to provide any connection to the human characters, and that felt like a blatant error to me and made it hard to stay interested in the movie. The middle 60-90 minutes is somehow just as slow as the beginning, except with no character development, and surprisingly little action. When the battle scenes did come late, I found them frantic, poorly shot, and not all that suspenseful. Considering this is a Spielberg movie, that may have been the most surprising disappointment of War Horse. After this, the horse somehow is granted miracle after miracle in a storyline that one would expect in an animated Disney movie, although I did still think it achieved some emotional impact late, as unbelievable as the circumstances may have been. That said, overall this is a movie that provides subpar acting, a wandering storyline, battle action as satisfying as an appetizer at Applebee's, and leaves little for the viewer to really enjoy. This felt like a made for TV movie that was about an hour too long in it's near pointless 2nd Act

I have no desire to see the movie version, but War Horse the play is excellent. Saw it last month and totally recommend it.

Moon is a near-masterpiece (from David Bowie's kid) and should be mandatory viewing for all fans of cerebral sci-fi.

I can't fucking wait to see The Cabin in the Woods.
